My attempt at a brief summary. Check the website for more specific, and probably more accurate details:

Qualifying round starts today (March 7), and continues through the weekend. It says you have to reserve a slot, and there's only 20 slots per location, per day. So don't expect to just show up and play. And not every HMV location is participating. (None here in London, for example.)

You get one shot to play through one of the following songs, your choice of difficulty, and high scorers move on to the next round. (I don't see specifics about whether it's highest overall scorer, or highest per song. Just in case, you should probably avoid Benatar. ;))

Pat Benatar - “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”
Priestess - “Lay Down”
Pearl Jam - “Even Flow”
Scorpions - “Rock You Like A Hurricane”
Tenacious D - “The Metal”

Quarter-finals and Semi-finals occur on later weekends, in Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Top Semi-final scorer in each market wins a trip for two to the location of the Finals, and a $250 HMV Gift Card.

The ultimate champion wins:

A HagstromF200P-CRE Electric Guitar autographed by Iain D’Sa (of Billy Talent)
A Marshall AVT50HX Head with AVT412XA Cabinet
A Quik Lok GS436 Guitar Stand

There's also a Wild Card draw to participate in the Finals. Winner of that gets the trip, gift card, an Xbox 360 and game.

I entered for the hell of it. Haven't played GH3 for awhile, was #2 in the Square One HMV when I left. The one time playthrough is inaccurate though, as you get 15 min to play and they take the highest score you get within that 15 min. So you have the opportunity to play at least twice.

I was behind by over 50,000 points even though my score was around 213,000. This other kid must be good :o

Was there a huge line up @ the Square One HMV?

I signed up to do my run Sunday afternoon. The leader at the store after the first day was only at 190,000. I did a practice run of 230,000 and left... :D

This is stupid. At HMV Eaton Centre, best score Friday is 190,000. Saturday best score is 290,000. I show up at 3:00PM Sunday and the best score of the day is 230,000 so far. I do a run of 326,000.... 15 minutes later, somebody shows up and does 333,000 (on his 2nd run). Since the best of every individual day advances... I'm screwed.
