I ordered a Bluray player from J&R in the US, on Wed Nov 7
On Wed Nov 8, I cancelled it with JR, they said it already shipped.
I told them to call the courier and put a stop on it.

They said I should just decline it when it arrived and my credit card would be refunded when they received the unit back. I clarified the point with them, and they parroted back the same response.
So I called UPS prior to arrival to let them know the arrangements with J&R and to return the package to them.

I did as they asked and my credit card was refunded on November 26.

Two days ago, I received a bill from UPS for $158 (Significantly more than the shipping charges would have been, in both directions.)

I've no intentions of paying this, I think that JR had a responsibility to tell me this would happen. If I had known about it, I would have accepted the item and sold here to recoup my losses.

Thing is, UPS have spelled my last name wrong on the invoice.
Address and all are correct, but last name is wrong.
Like if my name was Mike Thompson, the invoice is for Mike ThomYFon.

Do you think that this can affect my credit rating if I don't pay?

you should call them and offer to pay something and they will probably reduce it. If you call and say I dont think i should pay anything you will not get any sympathy.

The item was already shipped when you cancelled. UPS did the service of picking up the item and returning it back to the store. UPS provided a service for you...why should they not be paid?

Don't listen to this, it is simply not true.

Don't pay a cent of it. Raise a little hell and they will back off.

Screw offering to pay part of it. Raise absolute hell, be absolutely adamant that you WILL not pay it. You paid to have it delivered, they did not deliver the package.

UPS is just dicking around, and posts like this one reinforce why they do it.

They are charging you a brokering fee which includes GST/PST. Since the item was not delivered he doesn't have to pay anything.

Just raise a little hell.

You ARE brute, but right.

mlc the moment you realize they used UPS you should have smartened up. I would never buy from someone or some store that ships UPS. Ever.

There is a slightly higher level of service that includes the brokerage fees.

Very often, that level of service is cheaper than the sum of UPS Standard
service + Brokerage fees. Thats what I requested, that way I knew my costs up front.

The store should have been able to cancel the order before it even left the country.

Well, if someone ordered something from me via eBay and wanted to cancel the order after I already shipped it, I most certainly wouldn't be refunding their S&H charges. They would have take care of shipping it back to me, as well. Although, I do believe a package being returned to sender doesn't cost anything (at least with Canada Post).

I would make the customer aware of this, though.

UPS just plain sucks, though. Is the bill only for shipping? Or is it also for brokerage fees. If they're charging your brokerage fees, you should be able to at least get those charges removed since you didn't accept the package.

Edit: I didn't see the last post.

I called JR.com today, they will probably do something about it.

I found out today they refunded me everything except shipping to me.

They tried to tell me the shipper was responsible for the return shipping costs.

I asked who was the shipper if I never signed for the original shipment?

JR is the shipper for authorizing a return shipment.

You should pay for the shipping but not the brokerage fees.

JR had to pay for the shipping even though they didn't get a sale.

But UPS shouldn't have brokered a package that you didn't want delivered.

in regards to UPS and brokerage fees. say the item is already in the country and you refuse the package and have it sent back to the seller would you still have to pay the brokerage fees then?
