I'm thinking about picking up the trumpet as a side hobby. I played alto sax in high school for a little but that was well over 10 years ago.

Would you recommend the Yamaha Silent Brass system? I don't want to wake up the dead with my blowing; frnakly I'd be embarassed more than anything.

i play the trumpet and wow I'd definately need something like that. It's really loud playing a brass instruction in a home.!

I played the trumpet throughout highshchool. Was in the band Grade 9 & 10 :cheesygri :o
It's a great instrument to take up. It can be so powerful yet can play a very beautiful soft melody. Brass instruments are quite different then Woodwinds. Some people can pick up the blowing technique and some just can't. You change the notes with your mouth more then pressing keys. Just think of the song played at rememberence day and all the pitches. That's played without pressing any keys. It's all in the lips.
I always had trouble with the triple threes + . tickatickaticka. If you play the trumpet you know what I mean.

Man, I need to pick that up again. I miss it!

 Isn't that just a mute? It's a very common attachment.

It's more than a simple mute I think. I'm just wondering how much isolation it offers as I only have time to practice/learn at night.

Well, when you put like a towel into the horn, and you play you dont hear the notes but just a sound.... with that thing in the video, you can actually hear each note so you know if your playing right or wrong. or maybe i am wrong.

But yes, i definately recommend you to play the trumpet as a hobby. I've been playing for 3 years, and I plan on in the future as a hobby.

trumpet is pretty hard, the mouth piece is really small to buzz in...

i would say drums are more fun

Over my short music-playing time, I have played trumpet, flute and sax.

Flute is hardest

Trumpet is easiest

Any jackass can blow into the thing doesn't mean they are playing it.

I wanted to play trumpet in high school, but I had braces at the time and couldn't make any sound in the mouthpiece at all. So I got assigned to the Baritone (has the same size mouthpiece as trombone)...which was fun anyways and so easy.

I play trombone and have the Silent Brass system myself. It's not the cheapest thing on the market, but it is one of the best. The Denis Wick practice mutes are the best of the traditional practice mutes, as far as free-lowing and noise reduction. The Silent Brass takes that one step further, though, and are much easier to find.

I played the trumpet in high school, my parents hated it. I'd play in the basement, and the vents would rattle all the way upstairs. Playing with the horn plugged is no good, but those solutions posted (like a mute) and the Yamaha model you linked to look good.

Playing trumpet definitely makes your lungs stronger!

I'm glad to hear you're talented at playing it while blowing it. You should have no problem moving quickly up the corporate ladder.
