i'm interested in purchasing this 22" monitor, but read about samsungs lottery pannel. appearently their are 3 versions to 226bw model.

this issue was discovered back 6 months ago roughly. does anyone know whats the situation with it now?

if i go to my local canadacomputers store, are they selling 226bw with the "S" pannel?

Samsung's high end panels are PVA and usually end with a T, ie. 213T

Check the access speed, if it is 5ms or better, chances are, you are getting a TN panel. Another give away is the viewing angle. Good panels are usually 176 - 178.

My mistake. I thought you were looking for Panel types. I guess you are looking for Revisions

As of last Christmas, Samsung is still using multiple revisions of the panel, despite what you may hve heard from their PR guy.

Waht they have done is added the "extended gaunlet" version and labelled it 226CW that uses a S panel. HOwever this one is laggier than the 226bw (s panel).

They have also removed all references of the panel type from the internal panel information. The only way to check for the recent batches is to physically open up the metal grill to check which revision you have.

I wouldnt buy it from CC as their return policy is poor.

With proper calibration all the panel types should have similar results, assuming you have a hardware calibrator.

Chances of getting a genuine "S" panel are probably slim. Still worth taking a risk since this a highly rated monitor otherwise. As mentioned though buy from a store with good return privileges. Take it back immediately if you don't like what you see and can't get it properly adjusted.

I'm guessing that for non-S panels the quality is probably much better than it was when the problem first surfaces almost a year ago. Just guessing though. Samsung is well aware of the issue.

Doesn't matter which panel anymore

Ive heard about the panels switching back to all S Panels.

But like Phr3sh said, it doesnt matter, as long as you know how to set up your monitor correctly, they will all look the same.

Ive heard about the panels switching back to all S Panels.

That was a Samsung lie when the problem blew up. It never happened. Realistically, Samsung like many other monitor manufacturers does not have the in-house capacity to build all the panels they need and so they have no choice but to source them from other companies. Pretty much everybody does this incidentally. If you do it right the quality is indistinguishable between panels and unnoticeable to the customer. Samsung messed up when the 226BW became wildly popular after some very favorable reviews and they scrambled to get panels from other sources to meet demand.

22" is the sweet spot for the 8800GT. Any higher and you need SLI or CrossFire.

so is it a safe bet to pick one up form canada's computers?

No, the return policy sucks. Dead pixels i dont believe you can exchange with them.

Lots of potential problems:
-dead pixels
-backlight screwed up leading to excessive backlight bleeding
-cosmetic issues

None of which, except for maybe the 3rd one, can be exchange with CC. Stick with a large retailer like bestbuy and futureshop, staples for their easy return policy.

I have the same panel. I honestly don't care. Regardless if it's made by Samsung, A, C or not; it's still a very good monitor and probably one of the best in the market.

It's not like you're paying for a $1000 monitor here. We're talking about $300.

Really? It's one of the most popular 22" models. I bought mine on Boxing Day from Futureshop. Did they replace it with something?

No, it wasn't. I was looking at it at Bestbuy before pricematching it at Futureshop when I bought it for my fiancee last summer.
