Ive been searching for laptops and I've found two that i particularly like:

Pavilion is a consumer brand. If you want a sub notebook, look at the X Series from Lenovo.

In fact, I have a new one for sale in my thread.

HP Pavilion (TX2114CA) - $1249 at Futureshop (save $350)

They are almost the same machine except:
- extra 70GB disk space
- extra 1GB (might be useless if it comes with 32bit Vista)
- heavier

I think the $999 laptop is better buy.
For $250 you can get extra pair of 2x2GB DDR2 SODIMM ram ($90) and an extra 200GB hard drive and enclosure for $160.

Thanks! I have 2 questions though:

1) Do I really need 4GB of RAM?

2) If I do buy 1GB more RAM, how will I install it? There obviously isn't a slot for it or something outside the laptop. Will I have to open the laptop myself (void warranty, plus i wouldnt know what to do with it) or will I have to send it to a proffessional? Can the store do it for me before I buy the laptop if I ask them to ?

I found the same 999$ laptop at Staples for 1300$, Ill try to price match and get an extera $50 off. Does Staples take off 10% or 15% of the difference when price matching?

If you want 4GB, you'll need to buy a 2GB DDR2 SODIMM to replace the 1GB that comes with it. The laptop will come with 1GB and 2GB. Laptops only have 2 slots for ram. You can do it yourself, its a matter of removing the cover and removing the 1GB and putting in the 2GB. Not worth bringing it to a professional. And it wont void your warranty.

However, 3GB is more than enough.

Staples will match 10% the difference. So you'll end paying $969.

Don't get the HP PAVILION tx1420ca. It's the old model (like 2 years old?) with a passive digitizer. This means that you draw stuff by inserting pressure on the screen and it's not very accurate. See video demonstration:

HP Pavilion TX2114CA is much newer and has both an active and passive digitizer. The stylus, unlike the tx1420, has a microchip inside that emits some sort of magnetic field onto the screen and the screen reads this. therefore, it is much more accurate, you don't need to maintain pressure when you write, you can flip the pen upside down and use the top as an eraser (laptop will do this automatically for you) and you can even right click with it. Since it has passive as well, you can touch the screen with your finger to navigate.

If you take a look at this video, you will see the cursor moves where the stylus is without the stylus making any contact with the screen.

ultra is right, the tx2000 is WAY better. the tx1400 only works with it's pen, and sucks at it. The tx2000 is both a digitizer and a touch screen.

Both laptops feature the AMD Turion 64 x2 Processor, the speed is practically the same .1Ghz difference.

The one from Future Shop does have an extra 1024 MB RAM. Optical drive is the same. However the one from Future Shop offers you a bigger hard drive by 70GB, so if you need more then 250GB then its good for storage. You also have the same video card.

They are pretty close together.

almost the same as the 2114 but with 2.0ghz and 3gig ram.
I was waiting and waiting for the 2000 series to come out and ended up buying a regular hp laptop (not tablet) about 3 weeks ago :( now i have buyer's remorse.

So how're you liking the TX2114CA? I'm thinking of getting this my self but I don't know how good a deal it is at FS for $1249.99 when on the HP site that's seems to be the MSRP, see here (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho/WF06b/12139188-78299199-78299212-78299212-78299212-81683452-81844680.html?jumpid=oc_R1002_CAENC-001_HP%20Pavilion%20tx2114ca%20Notebook%20PC&lang=en&cc=ca)

HP took off the MSRP from their web site. The TX2114CA is now down to $1200 @ FS. Thinking of taking the plunge on this one.

Does anybody think it's a good deal?

hey I've been looking for this exact same model now for a while and can't seem to find it being sold anywhere. HP released a number of different variants of this notebook, most notably the 2500 series which usually has less memory, smaller hard drive or 1 or 2 missing features when compared to the 2114.

I'm kinda wishing I had jumped on this deal earlier in the year now that I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Has anyone here had any luck finding it? Thanks.
