View Full Version : spent $1.49 gas to fill her up

the weather was nice today so I took my moped from it's hibernation. Poured some new oil and took her down to the gas station to inflate her tires and fill her up with gas.
The stares were crazy as gas was going $1.12/L. I poured in $1.49 worth of gas and I'm good to go for another 150 km. Some guy even took a closer look at my gas pump.

Good on gas, but judging by the design of the engine, they are likely quite polluting.

actually biking cost more. I've considered it before. The cost of food replenishment and water per bike trip can be costly.
Now I would like to know how a 49cc engine can be polluting when it's been exempt from the gas emission testing?

The only problem with riding a bike or a scooter in this country is that you never know if you're going to make it back in one piece. I've witnessed 3 bike accidents in my life and a co-worker of mine has given up riding after his last accident.
It's great that you can get this kind of mileage/kilometers but it comes at a very high risk. You've got to be watching other drivers like a hawk and forget about playing the radio or listening to your iPod.

Good on gas, but judging by the design of the engine, they are likely quite polluting. Yeah, it sounds like a lawn mower and probably pollutes as much too.

BTW, the gas tank on the moped is over a gallon. If it took only 1.x L to fill it up, it was already mostly full... It's not a $1.49 "fill up".
Psycho44
Apr 7th, 2008, 11:38 PM
yeah you're right it's 5L capacity so a fill up would be about $5 with change. I'm slowly learning my moped.
So running a moped for 1 hour would be equivalent to 100 miles of driving pollution wise? Damn didn't know this little toy can spit out soo much more pollution than an automobile. So why are they exempt from the gas emission test?

Damn didn't know this little toy can spit out soo much more pollution than an automobile. So why are they exempt from the gas emission test? The Drive Clean program is very far from perfect.
Two-stroke gas engines have been a big part of the pollution problem in Asia. That's why they're now banned in many cities over there.

I did a little research on this, looks like Tomos models for 2007 and 2008 now meet the EPA standard, due to the adding of a catalytic converter. Before that, though, they were much more polluting.

1996 Geo Metro 1.3l engine. 49mpg.
49 mpg works out to about 20 km/L. That's darn good but my moped still beats it wth a 40+ km/L fuel consumption.http://www.mrmoped.ca/TechPages/TargaTech.htm
$1100 for a 1996 Geo Metro is nice but is the fuel capacity only 1.3L? I might look into buying one if insurance is not much.
I still like my moped though. I don't feel it's dangerous because of the low speed it travels and short commute. Also the maintenance cost and repair can all be done at home.

The engine's displacement is 1.3 liters. The tank is 40. I paid 400$ 2 years ago and insurance is 12$/month.
There's no way a car can beat a moped's frugality! But then again, a moped weighs what?

thanks for the heads up. I need a car for the big shopping, long distance highway travelling and winter season. I hate having to always borrow my parents car. That is a really good price, even cheaper than my moped and the insurance rate is sick $144/year.

How fast does your moped go? I have an average 60km commute one way each day. Would I need to leave the house at 4am to get there the same time as I would take in the car? Not much traffic to worry about on the roads at 4am I guess :)

My moped goes at least 70 km/h on level ground. Speedometer only shows 60 km/h max because mopeds are meant to only go 50 km/h.
That being said I think you'll be more concerned about overheating the engine than the speed of the moped for a 60 km commute one way without stopping off at Timmies.

i know this thread hasn't been active for some months but I couldn't help asking about $12/month insurance rate on the Geo Metro? If MrBurns or someone else can elaborate on such a low rate (which company?). The cheapest car insurance rates I've heard of are several times more than that (starting from $60-$70+/month).

Hackex,
I believe it has more to do with where I live; Whitehorse, Yukon.
My wife drives a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire, 4 door, we pay 11$ a month for that insurance.
Mind you now, when I lived in Montreal 10-12 years ago, I drove beaters there as well and paid 300$ or so for insurance. I was, obviously, much younger ..
To me cars are transportation. I don't care to look cool or whatever in one. I buy the cheapest I can find that is still working very well, basically, undervalued cars such as the Geos and Aspires and Sprints and the like.
I'd rather chew my arm off than pay 3000$ a year for insurance...

Gee, with a comment like that, we might as well not get up to go to the washroom, have one built out of our lazyboy. End up fat like the humans in Wall-E.
Bikes and scooter/vespas are great for city commute. So is the TTC when they're on time and not on strike.

And your point is?
If you can't afford the gas and the upkeep of the car, perhaps you should consider alternatives.
Why you paying so much for gas per litre? It is 75 cents/litre in Toronto.
