View Full Version : MBNA - Premier Rewards Platinum Plus, no annual fee - 1% cashback (not tiered)
Spooter

Here is how it works:
1. Go to www.mbna.com/canada/
2. Sign up for any card that does not have an annual fee
3. Get the card in the mail, call to activate it
4. Immediatley call back and ask to cancel it
5. They will transfer you to retention, just straight up tell them you want a credit card with platinum benefits and 1% cash back with no annual fee.
6. They will say, ok!, and send you the card
The benefit with this card is that the 1% is not tiered. You get 1% cashback on the first dollar you spend. The platinum benefits, such as free rental car insurance are also quite nice.
Existing MBNA card holders can get this retention card as well.

No the CITIBANK Enrich Card is inferior. Here's why:
1. No platinum benefits (like auto insurance)
2. They cap your 1% bonus at $250 a year.
3. CitiBank card carries a higher rate of interest (for those who are irresponsible)

exactly. That's what I have, all you need is to qualify for the enrich with a limit of more than something like 6k and then call them to upgrade. The 1% maxes at $500 on the platinum, don't think I'll be spending 50k on my card.

If I have this exact card already, any chance of getting this deal? I pay $25 annually but my cash back more than covers it. I'd still like to save another $25 if I could. If I called in, they would probably tell me I benefit from it already so would they still knock off the fee?

Yes.
Note, YMMV, because there's nothing stopping the CSR from rejecting your request (or giving you something else), or even going "okay" and then cancelling your card.

No, not that good. It's tiered, starts at 0.25%, it's 0.5% from $6000 - $9000, and only 1.25% over $9000. And then it is capped at $250.

That being said though, I've got the Citi Enrich Platinum as a backup to my 2% AMEX Gold Cash Back card and I love it.
Jam packed with features, no fees. My only complaint is that it pays out once a year (like MOST other cash back cards)

Off the top of my head:
You can get a max of $500 back (instead of $250 on the gold)
You get 60 day price protection on all your purchases
You get 90 day theft insurance on your purchases
Travel accident insurance up to $500,000
Car Rental insurance up to the value of the automobile
Up to 1 year extended warranty
Travel insurance is an extra cost.

Citi Enrich Platinum looks like it's a little wee bit better due to having the Price Protection feature...
But other then that... I don't see anything else, it's worse in the sense that you need a 15K minimum yearly income to apply though. While MBNA has no minimum income limit.

But realistically 15K is nothing since that translates to roughly $7.50/hr, which is around minimum wage, meaning as long as you have a full time job you're qualified.
If you don't have a full time job meaning you're not able to make regular payments, you really shouldn't be getting a credit card for regular spending to begin with.

Well, normally I would recommend the Enrich for the benefits ... but it does look like they've removed the Platinum version of the card (if it was ever there to begin with). They have regular, gold, platininum versions of the Driver's Edge still.

Yeah, that might be an option though, the American Express 2% card only is better when you reach beyond $6250 spending per year, before that the 1% Cash Back of this card offers greater return.
So if your guaranteed to spend more then $6250 per year on your credit card then American Express is the better of the 2.

If you guys are looking for a cash back Platinum Card, why don't you try the CIBC Visa Platinum Dividend Credit Card?
http://cibc.com/ca/visa/dividend-platinum-card.html
Yes it costs $79 per year, but lets compare it to the AMEX Gold:
2500 at 0.5% = 12.5
2500 at 1% = 25
Total cash back earned = $37.5
5000 at 2% = $100
100 - 37.5 = $62.5
79 - 62.5 = $16.5
So platinum membership is costing you $16.5 for a 2% cash back card.
I think it is better than any of the 1% cards provided that you spend more than $7900.

I called and had mine switched without explicitly threatening to cancel. The first tier support person seemed smart, so after changing my online password (while establishing a positive rapport with the support person), I said I wanted to switch to a 1% card from another company.
She said "here is our 1% card with a fee"; I said "hmm the other card has no fee..."; she said "yes... but our card doesn't have the $250 limit, do you plan on spending over $25,000?"; I said no; she said "okay then...blablabla I'm going to offer you our card with no fee.
I just won the RPG of life by choosing the diplomatic path.
PS: this was for the PremierRewards card. There seems to be some confusion in the thread, with some people getting either that or the Platinum Plus card, and others saying they can get both on one card. The mbna website says they are two different cards... is anyone sure that both cards can be mutated into one? Or does the PremierRewards card naturally have all the features of the Platinum Plus card?

Premier Rewards and Platinum Plus are 2 seperate cards, Premier Rewards has everything Platinum Plus has plus the 1% discount but it comes with a $29 Annual Fee usually. By saying you have found a beter offer to a service rep though, you can get the Premier Rewards without the Annual Fee, so we are all getting the Premier Rewards card not Platinum Plus.

Yeah I just found this, and these guys say that having a good credit rating and/or over $5000 credit limit automatically makes your card a platinum one. http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=543824&highlight=platinum

On the next $500-------------------------0.50%
On any amount over $1,000------------1.0%

exactly. That's what I have, all you need is to qualify for the enrich with a limit of more than something like 6k and then call them to upgrade. The 1% maxes at $500 on the platinum, don't think I'll be spending 50k on my card.
When I upgraded my Enrich to Platinum last year, they told me the Platinum has no cap on the cashback amount. Not that I plan to charge over 50k on the card but I thought I'd let you guys know. Maybe it's something you can ask for, or maybe the guy on the line just didn't know what he was talking about. I have not received a brochure or any printed document to confirm/disprove his claims though...

The main special condition I guess would be that it's geared towards students. I'm quite surprised Scotiabank has finally started to be a bit more lenient towards giving credit to students with a MINIMUM of $1000; my MAX was $1000 when I was a student, even when I was a co-op student WORKING for Scotiabank. The other bonus to this would be the ScotiaStar network, which is quite limited. Their list for myself anyways would only be used for MAYBE zip.ca and tigerdirect.ca. The tiers themselves are decent since it is a student card and not a regular card. They do lack any sort of extended warranty/price protection; CIBC has a dividend Visa that has some of these features but also has higher tiers.

Don't be so quick to make fun. MBNA offers pretty much ALL of their cards in 3 levels: 1) Regular 2) Gold 3) Platinum Plus
They just happen to have a card called "Platinum Plus" as well. That card is basically the same as all the other Platinum Plus versions of other cards but without any extra rewards ... so why would you get it?

I did a little browsing with that link and I saw this.
http://www.scotiabank.com/cda/content/0,,CID10410_LIDen,00.html
L'earn VISA card for students
with the following tiers
Annual Net Eligible Purchases----------% Moneyback Reward
On the first $500--------------------------0.25%
On the next $500-------------------------0.50%
On any amount over $1,000------------1.0%
Annual Fee $0
Can anyone please confirm these tiers and if there are any other special conditions?
Also, does anyone know of any VISA card equivalents? ie 1% not tiered, no fees?
The tiers are listed on the website, isn't that confirmation enough?
I wonder what happens when you are no longer a student... will they switch you over to the regular moneyback card? The tiers for that are:
RATE.......ELIGIBLE PURCHASES
0.25%.....<$1,500
0.50%.....$1,500 – $3,000
1.00%.....>$3,000

I used to have the eBay MBNA Credit card....Two years ago, the card program got discontinued, they gave me Premier Rewards Platinum Plus - no fee;)
It's great, the only problem is - I hate when they send me stacks of access cheques every month, what a waste of paper!
They keep raising my credit limits, I actually had to call in and tell them to cut back on it

It was easy to make the change. Thanks for the tip. The 1.9% interest for 6 months on balance transfer promotion sweetens the deal. (There is a 1% one time fee on balance transfers, so take that into account) Are the MBNA customer service people always as friendly? I scrapped my PC Mastercard because they were terrible and very rude to my wife, when she inquired about these strange prerecorded phone calls, seemed like "fishing", boiler room phone calls. Turned out she had $50 overdue balance on her PC MC.

Worst yet, I am not sure if the system suck or purposely post the transaction late, It can take up to 3-4 business before my mom's payment went in for PC MC.
She got dinged interest almost every month:evil: The rep ignorantly told her to pay earlier, like wft!

I have had this card for 8 years, at first without the 1% cashback and then I got it switched about 5 years ago. My card is classified as: Premier Rewards Platinum Plus MasterCard
I didn't have to threaten anyone to get it, I just asked if they had a cash back option, they sent me a new card. Every January 1% of my year's total gets knocked off my January bill.
[Pros]
1% cashback non-tiered, no fee
[Cons]
MBNA seems like a dodgey bank but I've had this card for over 8 years without issue.
Oddly enough after I bought a car financed through Scotiabank, they offered me a similar card, 1% non-tiered no fee. Can't hurt to ask if you prefer Scotiabank.

It seems you're missing the biggest difference between the Platinum Plus and the PremierRewards card.
The PremierRewards = Platinum Plus with Cashback AND FIXED 19.99% Interest Rate.
Platinum Plus = Standard 9.99% interest rate.
So it depends on what you value more...lower interest rate or cash back....for me, I value the lower interest rate more than the cash back, as I usually use this account to carry a balance.

wow, that was a lot easier than i thought.
i have no credit history, i recieved a premier rewards 1% about 5bd after applying. i called to activate but i said i wouldnt activate if there was a annual fee. i was transferred and the retention csr gave me the card with no annual fee.
i also then asked to do a balance transfer at 0%apr (quote bodx) on my other card (platnium plus) and he did it with a 0.5% fee instead of the normal 1% fee.
thanks red flag deals!!!

Credit Wise is just a credit protection program. It's valuable for some people, as if you keep a low balance you won't be charged much. (only a buck or so per $100 balance)
I don't know all of the benefits for the Canadian version, but for the U.S. side of MBNA, it will cover your minimum monthly payments for awhile for life events like marriage, divorce, moving, graduating, unemployment, etc., so the Canadian benefits are probably somewhere in the same ballpark.
If you keep a low balance, it's a good thing to have. If you keep a high balance (in the higher thousands), then you'll end up paying quite a bit more each month. Although if you have no balance, you won't be charged anything.
Just call them and tell them you want the number to cancel, and if they argue, just tell them to give it to you or you want to talk to a manager, which will get them to give you the number quickly as the manager will just give you the number anyways and increase their call time.

Just out of curiosity, is it bad to have credit cards you don't use and leave in the drawer and not cancel them, or is there something like an inactive fee after awhile?
I have my University of Alberta MBNA card since 2005, and I didn't bother to activate it  (expire 07/08) cuz it has the creditwise thingy (0.99$ for 100$) and I think they would cancel it as the time expires.
and now they have just sent me a new one
I have just talked to them on the phone to switch to this one . At first the CSR insist that it has 30$ annual fee but I told him that on the website it said that it has no annual fee, so he waived it.
Then I told him about the creditwise thingy (it doesn't make sense to have a 1% cash back card when you have to pay 1% for the CreditWise thingy anyway) but he gives me a different 1-800 and asks me to call that number to handle the Creditwise insurance.

exactly. That's what I have, all you need is to qualify for the enrich with a limit of more than something like 6k and then call them to upgrade. The 1% maxes at $500 on the platinum, don't think I'll be spending 50k on my card.
nice, going to try that once i get my enrich card. NO annual fee also right?
angel_wing0
Jun 13th, 2008, 02:15 AM
The tiers are correct...but if you hit 9k then you get 1.25% ON THE FULL AMOUNT that you spend.
That being said though, I've got the Citi Enrich Platinum as a backup to my 2% AMEX Gold Cash Back card and I love it.
Jam packed with features, no fees. My only complaint is that it pays out once a year (like MOST other cash back cards)
now i know what the power of the ultrmar is...finally! but screw it i wont spend 9k on a credit card in a year anytime soon. Besides, if one does spend that much, it's much better using the 2% amex. I wonder if car dealerships accept credit card for down payments/monthly payments? lol
another q for citi, can i ask them to upgrade one of my current cards, say petro, and tell them to upgrade it with 1% no tier cash back along with the 2 cents off per litre? that will be the BEST :D did anyone ever try?

That would explain why it is so confusing, they don't actually list any of this on the card websites.

You get car rental, common carrier accident, and this "2000 to return home if someone dies" insurance. That is it. No flight delay or lost baggage. That said, i don't know of any other no-fee cards offering this either.
EDIT: The part on the page where it says "Lost luggage assistance" is *NOT* lost baggage insurance. It is a for-fee service where they help you find your lost luggage or something. Read over the warranty booklet.

I was at a staples (the one just north of McCowan & Sheppard) and they said they didn't PM smaller companies like CC only bigger companies like FS, BB, etc. Other people have said that they were able to PM an online store over in BC with no problem. Is the PM policy YMMV with each store??

For those who have a decent credit histroy can also have MBNA Starwood Platinum credit card whcih includes all Platinum benefits and you earn sHeraton hotels reward points which you can use towards hotel night. They give 5000 bonus points (enough for 1 night at 3-4 star hotel) upon joining and you earn 1 point per dollor. It turns out 3-4 % cash back if you count as hotel money. I have this card since last 3 years and all my purchases incluing LCD TV have extended warranty for 1 more year. I am very happy with the service. :)

The Capital One Platinum Cash Back M/C seems viable:
No annual fee
No cap on rewards
0.5% up to $3K - 1% after $3K
Redemption by statement credit or cheque
Usual Platinum card benefits

I have this card since last 3 years and all my purchases incluing LCD TV have extended warranty for 1 more year. I am very happy with the service. :)hmm, what's the likelihood of combining this with a cashback incentive? it'd be nice to have wouldn't it?!

Just switched to the Premier Rewards Platinum Plus from Premier Rewards. They asked for my permission to close the account and transfer balance to the new card, hope that doesn't affect my credit score too much. Good to have a Mastercard where VISAs aren't accepted.

i've been meaning to make the switch for about a month now, and finally got around to it. I've had their student card for about 1.5 years, and it's been fine (minus the occasional phone calls about services that I don't want). Waited for a CSR for about 10 minutes, then got transferred to a "senior account representative" or some such thing. Waited another 5 minutes, told him what I wanted to do, and that was it. About as painless as dealing with MBNA can be.
Thanks for the deal!

yep.
Student Awards was sponsored (not sure about now), by MBNA. It's a website for scholarships and other awards. I guess they were sharing information. When I got my UBC card, I got two cards, one for UBC, and one for Student Awards. Methodology was shady since I only wanted 1 card, but I decided to keep the second one to build credit.
When I called in, the CSR said there's a fee, but he'll waive it. Which is totally stupid, since the website said there's no fee. He then said the card on the site isn't as good in how it collects the cashback 'points'.... I really hope he was just trying to make it sound good, and not sign me up for a wrong card....

What I did was, I called in and asked for the 6.99%. The rep says he couldn't do it for me because unless I get the promotion in the mail, I'm not eligible for it. BUT he looked at my rating and he says I qualify for a better rate, so he lowered it to 9.99% fixed compared to the previous AIR of 19.99% <----ouch

wait, i couldn't quite understand you. Did you mean that you called in and asked for 6.9% and they didn't want to give it to you and you threatened to cancel your current card. When you did that, they gave you the 6.9% card, and they even instantly lowered your current card (the one that you wanted to cancel) to 9.99%?

The website to go to and code is on this site.
I called a few days back and they changed my Platinum Plus card to 9.99. That is as low as they can go with that card no ifs, ands or buts.
Two days ago i found the rfd article and called. They told me the only way to get that rate was to apply. I said screw it I will just go elsewhere. At that time, they took my info on the phone, approved the new card at 6.9% right then and cancelled the old card (at my insistence of course) which was just changed previously to 9.9%

there is none since the "cash back" will be credited to your bill on jan of the next year. Or you can just request a cheque to be sent to you for the cash back amount.
Another thing i like about mbna, use your card and the transcation will be posted online RIGHT AWAY. To alot of ppl it's not a big thing but i really like that. Citi and Amex takes a couple of days for the transcations to show up.

Oh, my online account got updated to show the new card and the old card is gone.
It does earn points that are redeemed in jan:
Points are earned and accumulated to your Account in the following manner:
Every $1.00 in Net Purchase transactions will earn 1.0 MBNA PremierRewards point. Each MBNA PremierRewards Point has a value, upon redemption, of $0.01 Canadian dollars. A "Net Purchase" means the purchase of goods or services made by you or your authorized user(s) through the use of your Account, plus or minus any adjustments made to your Account in respect of these purchases, e.g., refunds or reimbursements. Net Purchases do not include interest charges, cash advance transactions (including credit card cash advance cheques, balance transfers, and bank or automatic banking machine disbursements); any balance(s) permissibly transferred between MBNA accounts; cash advances redesignated as purchases; person to person transfers; the purchase of money orders, wire transfers, bets, lottery tickets, or casino gaming chips; unauthorized charges; credit life insurance premiums; over-the-credit-limit fees; and other fees and charges assessed on your Account.

there is none since the "cash back" will be credited to your bill on jan of the next year. Or you can just request a cheque to be sent to you for the cash back amount.
Actually....
1.)
What you spend is converted to points equal to the dollar value of each of your net purchases. These points are worth $0.01
At the end of the calendar year they will take the points and multiply it by 0.01 and round to the nearest 100th decimal point. This amount will be credited back to your account.
The number of points you have in the account will be reduced by the number redeemed.
So, if you spend $1234 in one year, you'll have 1234 PremierRewards Points. At redemption, 1234 * 0.01 = $12.34 credited back.
So, I guess you can say that the minimum incrememt of the credit is something that has a value when multiplied by 0.01, and rounded to the 100th decimal point (that is, at least 1 cent). Basically, you have to spend at least $1. Anything less has no dollar value, (unless they round up, which I don't know).
2.)
More directed at angel_wing0:
As per the Redemption section in the Terms and Conditions that I received, there is no mention of being able to request a cheque. I don't think you can do this.
It does say that if the redemtption is more than the balance owing, this will show as a credit balance on the statement, and you will not receive cash or cheque for any redeemed amount.

FYI, the CSR has the power to make it a platinum card, so they can override the platinum = min. $5000 credit limit.
I switched over from a different card with a credit limit of less than $5000, but the CSR said he'll just upgrade the card to platinum with the old card's limit.
This means that during a switch (changing accounts) you can still get platinum even if th credit limit on your existing card isn't at the platinum level.
Don't know if this is true with web/phone applications.

I've been using the Sony Mastercard for the last 3 or 4 years, which means I'll be getting a 40" Bravia this Christmas for very little money. :D
But I think I found my next credit card. I'm not even concerned about the credit limit as I usually only spend about $1000-1200 a month on my card, and I pay it off in full. I'd settle for no fee and 1% cash back, but the platinum features are nice, too, when I get a chance to use them.
According to this, there are no spending limits or earning limits for the 1%, but it doesn't confirm whether or not that is for the Platinum version of the Premium Rewards.

You get purchase protection (against loss, damage, ...) for 90 days, and that includes computers... "Computers, software, their parts and accessories are collectively considered as one item. Coverage for such an item is limited to $1,000 per loss." I think that includes any individual parts you get separately.
Extended warranty doesn't list computer/computer parts in their exclusions, so it should be covered.

You can also go to Bank of Montreal and pay it there, but they will charge you a fee if you do not have an account there.
I see, thats how I pay my rogers cell phone bill....I'm with Scotiabank btw, and their internet banking allows me to pay/send money of any amount to Rogers...can I do this with MBNA for free as well? thanks.

I just got the card with no annual fees. I called and asked for the card, CR asked me if that one was without annual fee (why would I say it had one...), and I got it, no problems, no other questions asked. Just for a little background, Ive only had an MBNA university creditcard for about a year and a half. Looks like they are giving these away if only you ask.

I had an MBNA Nursing card for a few years, but stopped using it for about a year, so I've been meaning to cancel it anyways... But rather, I ended up getting this platinum card instead. The customer satisfaction representative (lovely new variation on CSR) thought the card had a $29 annual fee, but after insisting she check, she verified no annual fees. I guess some of the CSR's still don't know the new details of this card.
Good luck!

I got a mbna university card during my first year. Over the 4 years I was in school, I had no problem switching to any of the mbna cards.
I don't think you'll have a problem, but they did stuck me with about a $500 limit at first though. It went up by $300 every once in a while. After 4 years, it's over $4000 now.

No way there must be some catch. There not gona pay 20% of your mortgage and car payments.
Edit: Just went to the Citi Us site. "The Citi CashReturns MasterCard has recently been re-worked such that it now offers a 1% cash back on all purchases with a 20% cash back bonus for the first twelve months. That brings the cash back rewards up to a full 1.2% for a year." Lol 20% cashback would have been ridiculous.

Great deal!
I used it on my MBNA University of Toronto Alumni Card and it worked like a charm, took less than 2 minutes. I just asked if I could get a better card with some kind of reward, comparable to the Citi Enrich card and the CSR recommended the Premier Rewards (make sure it's the one with the platinum benefits and 1% cash back). He also said switching over to it from my existing MBNA card would have no repercussions on my credit score.
I asked and the 1% cash back is NOT tiered and is credited every january. The platinum benefits include automatic collision insurance on rental cars and 90 day purchase protection against theft/damage on all purchases. This is a NO FEE card (some of the older posts mentioned a $29 fee, but this is wrong).
Btw does anyone know if the card includes fraud protection? I'm pretty sure this is standard for Visa and MC these days, but if anyone knows for sure, that would help.

If it's within the product's warranty period, call the company. If it has expired, then MBNA. Remember, it doubles the warranty up to one year. So if the warranty is only six months, MBNA will only add another six months. If three yrs, then only one extra yr.

my mom bought a pair of pants with an mbna card with that warranty and few weeks later it ripped.
She then started the process to get reimbursed. It was a long 3 months hassle. She called a first time and they wanted the usual stuff like the pants receipt. She never heard from them again... She called back and got told she received a voice mail 1 month ago saying she needed to show a proof her , credit card balance had been paid even! (we never received that voice mail) And what's strange is that they should be able to see that the credit card has been paid. And it was paid a long time ago.
Anyways, she did get the money back in the end.

"Foreign currency transactions will incur a 2.5 % currency conversion charge."
Can someone explain does this implies 2.5% of of purchase price plus currency conversion of the date of purchase
or
2.5% currency conversion rate added to the rate of the purchase date.
(purchase of) $USD 100 = $CAD 100*2.5% + 1.10 (assumed conversion rate of that day)
or $UDF 100 = $CAD 100*2.6% (2.5%+0.1% conversion rate of date)

I've read stories about people that paid their credit card bill on time and then MBNA accused them of making the payment late or not at all. Ex. MBNA did not receive your cheque for your payment in time. After that MBNA jacked up their interest rate on the CC, charge interest etc.
Has anyone experienced this or know anyone that had these problems?
On the website MBNA Canada has two options for payment through cheque or pre-authorized payment. Could I use the pay bills feature on my own online banking site too?

They will x1.025 whatever the amount is after being converted to Canadian. God forbid you get that transaction credited back to your account, then they will work in reverse. They will x0.975 whatever the amount is in CAD after being converted. So, you will lose 5% on that transaction assuming there is no change in conversion rate(which never is the case, buy and sell rates are never the same w/ banks).

All cards (and even banks when you go to exchange money) will charge you a conversion rate - 2.5% seems to be pretty standard from what I've seen.

They give you a different annual fee depending on how you get into the same area. For instance if you go to the mbna canada site and click on popular cards then into the premier rewards card, it's $0 annual fee, but you in go in via Rewards Cards -> MBNA rewards -> Premier Rewards, then it shows $29 annual fee.

Yeah, that's strange. They may not have updated the links. Or it's a ploy to make new applicants pay an annual fee.

Yes. I just got this card and assumed there was no fee. I called them and found that there was a $29 annual fee. After some discussion, the CSR agreed to send me a new card without a fee.

I just called MBNA to do the BT and was told they "absolutely could not" reduce the balance transfer rate of 1% by the "Senior manager helping out to take calls"
its too bad the people who managed to negotiate a 0.5% BT fee wouldnt post the name of the person they were talking to ;)

MBNA Platinum Card
Interest Rate: 8.96% (Fixed Rate)
1% CashBack Rewards
No Annual Fee
All the Platinum benefits w/car rental insurance, extended warranty, etc.
Is this similar to what the rest of you have been getting? Especially interest wise?

Well its 8.96%, so almost 9% and I actually was thinking of just cancelling the card, since i dont use it much anymore, but when I read about this cashback option, no annual fee and platinum benefits, i thought i would check out what they would offer me, so when i spoke to the agent, they gave me that.
i was hoping for 4.99% interest, but I guess that a bit too much to ask for.

haha
i didnt even read this post.
i had the ubc alumni credit card and the marketing people from india (offshore operations) kept calling me about that insurance that they want me to sign up on.
i was on the phone with some woman who didnt speak english for 20 minutes, saying again and again how i didnt care what she said. but she just kept saying "but ma'am, i don't understand.." well that makes the two of us.
and they mailed me stuff every other week and it just got REALLY annoying esp since ive never used the CC at all and got it just for kicks.
so i called in to cancel, and they immediately switched me to retentions. i just wanted out, but they promised to take me off their marketing list, and to give me a premier rewards platinum plus credit card free of all charges.
so i ended up getting a low interest rate (which i don't really care for), as well as 1% cash back.
so yes, this actually works, and its really easy.
do it.

For those you are able to get the fee waived. I wonder if they would get a little surprise next year as the system automatically adds the annual fee. I wonder if there is a way to make waived in the system rather than manual waive one time

assuming that u havent maxed out your credit limit with the 0%/15 months, yes u can.
But like u said, it's better to get the citi enrich right now since if u did get the 1% mbna u would have to move $500 of your credit limit there.

So the general consensus is there's no fee? Has there been a documented case where people were charged $29?
I switched my no-rewards Preferred card to the Premier Rewards card last week and I just got the card today in the mail. The rep on the phone said there's no fee, and I said okay. But on the website it still says there's a $29 annual fee. This is a backup card I use maybe $2 a month on, so the annual fee would exceed how much I spend on the card a year!

I switched from a plain Preferred card with no rewards to the Premier Rewards in November, and it was really just a simple product change. I checked my credit last week and there was no hit, not even a soft hit. You aren't requesting a credit line increase so they're not going to check your report.
However, the card number does change if you do a product change. Hope that helps.

If you can get a $5,000 limit then you'll get the Platinum Plus card. My original arrangement was I got my MBNA card when I turned 18 with a $1,000 limit. It got increased to $2,000 a few months later. In November I switched over to the Premier Rewards (but not Platinum). In December I asked for a credit line increase and was approved for $5,000 and at the same time I asked to be switched to the Platinum Plus and they said okay.
I am a 2nd year student. I think it's harder to get a $5,000 limit right off the bat, but you can silently ask for your limits to be increased by a few thousand each time, or they'll automatically raise your limits.

yes i had the regular card (no rewards) for a month and called mbna to switch to the platinum plus premium rewards. This is the first credit card i ever had so they dont care about your credit rating. I only have a $1000 limit and my monthly interest is 9.99%

To sPiKyAZN, if you are referring to applications that you filled out at your university I believe those people mentioned something like 4-6 weeks.
To markzs2001 concerning the 9.99% interest. From time to time, MBNA will send out promotions for lower interest rate, I am on 8.99% (not much better).
To most students, there is a way to easily increase your credit limit but will result in more hard credit hits. Basically sign up for one or two MBNA credit cards every semester. Once the cards come in call MBNA and ask them to combine the new cards credit limit to your old limit. Voila, now you just got a $1000 credit increase.
But if you regularly use your MBNA card, your credit limit will automatically increase over the years.
I am still waiting for my Premier Rewards Platinum Plus card to come in from the mail.

I have been told by my bank, reducing the limit on your credit cards can help reduce your credit risk. If you card is lost or stolen, the bank's loss on fraudulant transaction can be limited within the credit limit. Which makes sense.

I have been told by my bank, reducing the limit on your credit cards can help reduce your credit risk. If you card is lost or stolen, the bank's loss on fraudulant transaction can be limited within the credit limit. Which makes sense.
I recently replace my visa card (From rbc to TD). TD rep. told me i was pre-approved for $10k. I told him to put me in for $500. He looked at me blankly, why?
I told him it is a backup card for my MBNA cashback M/c.
We have a cashback visa too. (their cashback is 0.5% for first 3k)
Ya, just got this card and thinking of dumping that Rewards TD Visa. I'm thinking of switching to the Scotia Scene It Credit Card to get the 2 free movies right off the bat.

Just surfing around GCR, and they have a rebate of 40.00 is earned when you apply for this card and upon first purchase made on your MBNA card.
Great for people who are applying for a new card (not switching cards). The link brings you to the no fee application.
I just called and they said there isn't any card that gives $40 rebate on your first purchase:confused:

Just called in @ 1 am
start of call.
me: "hi i want to convert my (university) card to premier rewards platinum card"
Steve the CSR (Ottawa): "no problem I can do that for you right now, i'm gonna set you up with the one with no annual fee ... it's the one with 1% cash back ... (agreement statement) ... 10 days for new card to arrive"
end of call.
length of call: 2 mins 21 sec
I just called in as well. I got transferred to the retentions line, asked to cancel my credit card, requested for the 1% platinum benefits card, and they said 'yes, we have that card and let me set you up with that card'.
It was extremely easy, and took less than 5 mins.
Thanks everyone!

I cancelled my MBNA Platinum Plus Premium Rewards card last November and one week ago I received an offer in the mail from MBNA to reopen my account with them. Same card with the same benefits but instead of a 19.99% AIR, they lowered it down to 7.99%.
I called them to reopen my account and also negotiated the 7.99% to 6.99% AIR. This is not a promo AIR rate for x amount of months. This is the lifetime AIR.
Excellent rewards card with low AIR.. hard to beat.
YMMV trying to get this AIR

I have the other card, world points with $29 annual fee waived.
I have placed a request for $500 by giving up 50,000 points and I still didn't receive the cheque for it yet. Must be due to the economical downturn. My first request back a year ago was $250 and I received the cheque only 1 week after placing the order.

This card also comes with 2.99% on balance transfers for 12 Months. Deal must be taken within first 3 months of having the card.
Standard 1% BT Fee, was able to negotiate it to 0.5% without any issues at all.
Not a GREAT deal, but if you've got the card and need to do a BT, why not.

Basically what happens if you read the terms and conditions, is that you apply for the Premier Rewards Platinum Plus card and if they don't approve you for the platinum plus, they will approve you for the Premier Rewards Preferred.
That's what happened to me, and I just called in to switch without a problem.

I just got mine as well, although I just applied online. www.mbna.ca right now actually shows No Annual Fees for the Premier Rewards card.
A few questions though, I don't know if everyone's experienced this.
Did you guys get the CreditWise protection? Is it free if I don't carry a balance every month? Or is the 99 cents charged as soon as the average daily balance reaches $100?
No PayPass? I was a little disappointing not seeing it on my card.
What is up with the quality of the graphics on the card? Mine shows Premier Rewards kind of blurry. I bet you when I go traveling people are going to be reluctant to accept it because it looks kind of fake.

Mar 19th, 2009, 12:08 AM
i am not 100% sure on this, correct me if i am wrong, but i believe it charges you as soon as you hit $100 on your balance.
eg
jan 1 purchase $80
jan 2 purchase $30 <- charge $0.99
jan 3 purchase 101 <- another charge of 0.99
and it gets totaled up at the end of the month
so your jan balance will be
$80 + $30 + $101 + $1.98

As for the CreditWise, I had them add it when i got the card, i then called to cancel when physically receiving the card and was offered creditwise for $0.49 per $100 without the job protection feature. So its definitely negotiable.

Be careful they don't try to stick you with Card Insurance -- I have had this card for at least 8 or 9 months, then magically "Insurance" popped up on my card at a rate of 1% of my expendatures ($0.99 for every $100 spent) -- basically eliminating my rewards. All you have to do is call them and have them remove it (hopefully before your 1 month "free trial" expires or else you'll be paying). The insurance is rediculous anyways -- if you lose your job or can't work due to some injury, they will pay your *minimum* monthly payment -- essentially racking up huge amounts of interest on your card.
I'm not sure how they can add features without permission to someone's card which cost said person money, but they sure did.

is there annual fee for this card?
Just spent 3 minutes on the phone with MBNA rep to convert my current MBNA Premier Rewards Platinum Plus to the new Smart Cash card.
I asked twice and got confirmed twice
It is a Platinum card. No annual fee FOREVER (not just waived in the 1st year).
Points earned so far will be forfeited when convert to the new card.
Promotional rate 5% rebate on GAS and GROCERIES (registered gas, grocery business: Loblow, Safeway, etc.., Walmart, Canadian Tire are NOT) on first 6 months up to $600 per month, after that it is 1%.
After 6 months, regular rate is 3% rebate for the first $600 per month and after $600 it is 1%.
All other purchases are 1% rebate.
Also the interest rate for the new Smart Cash Card is 13.9% compared to 19.9% for the PRP+. I was offered the new rate automatically without negotiation.
Everything else and all the purks are the same as Premier Rewards Platinum Plus including $1M travel accidental insurance, collision waivers etc...
So basically getting more rebate for the Gas and Grocery and get cash back more frequently which is good.
More details will be updated when I receive the welcome package in 10 days.
Hope this helps.

Everything else and all the purks are the same as Premier Rewards Platinum Plus including $1M travel accidental insurance, collision vavers etc...
So basically getting more rebate for the Gas and Grocery and get cash back more frequently which is good.
More details will be updated when I receive the welcome package in 10 days.
Hope this helps.
Is that $600/month rebate (spending $12k/month), or $600/month spending ($30/month rebate)?

As far as my understanding, it should be $600 spending. Will you spend $12K in Grocery and Gas per month?
Believe this is to cap people sharing the card. Or for people spending a lot in Gas (for example, Taxi Driver )

What am I losing by changing from PRPP to this new card? I know the grocery, gas thing is a benefit, but I save on gas in another way, and don't purchase the groceries. Need to see if it's worth it to switch.

I called MBNA on the March 31 to close my Primer Reward account half an hour before midnight; the rep offer me the new MBNA Smart Cash card. He said that it is new (start on April 1, 2009) and it is not on the web yet.
This card offers 3% cash back on Gas and groceries; 1% on normal purchase. In stead of sending out rebate cheque on every January on the Premier Reward card, this card send out rebate cheque whenever rebate dollar reach $50.
In additional to my cancelation of my card, the retention rep offered me 5% cash back on Gas and groceries on the first 6 months.
I have an old MBNA CAA MC that I rarely use, and was thinking of closing it anyways. Does anyone know if you can only upgrade from the Premier Rewards MC or can it be from any MBNA MC?

Well the whole Platinum thing is just a status, all you will have to do is just upgrade it. So you can do it on your current card or any other card you apply for even if it is not listed on the website.
Just call them and ask for the Smart Cash Card with Platinum Status on it and you are good to go!

I called in to cancel my MBNA Master Card too since I wanted to switch to PC Financial and they offered me the same deal. However, I'm hearing different things about what the actual deal is. Here's what I've gathered from two separate calls with different representatives:
For the first six months, you get 5% cash back when you spend your credit card on any grocery or gas station (1% on any other purchases), up to a maximum cash back of $600 spent per month. After the six months, you get 3% cash back when you spend your credit card on any grocery or gas station (1% on any other purchases), up to a maximum cash back of $600 spent per month. Cash back is paid monthly when you meet $50 in cash-back savings.
What differs from the other poster is this:
I didn't hear anything about the 1% after you max your $600 quota...but I think it's true since the representative did say something about if you have $149 in redemption dollars, you'd get $100 back. There's no way to obtain a redemption balance of $149 anyway unless this condition holds true.
Oblivious
Apr 6th, 2009, 12:32 AM
I also asked MBNA if they plan to implement a system to track your redemption dollars, similar to PC Financial's PC Points (http://www.pcpoints.ca/en/index.asp). What I've heard is they don't have one at the moment and they don't intend to, which is a big let-down since I often want to confirm that I am in fact getting the redemption that I am entitled to.

So how do you apply for this new smart card, couldnt find it in their website, just call and ask for it, btw I dont have any mbna cards
I believe this is only an incentive to people who want to cancel their cards...I was just fortunate enough that the day I finally decided to cancel (I'd been clearing out my account for a month before and had it empty for a while...never got around to calling in) they had JUST started this promotion literally on the same day. The representative I spoke with said that MBNA had specifically created this to counter PC Financial's MC.
However, you can try calling in and when prompted to choose from the list of options, choose to speak with a representative. This person will NOT be from customer retention, but they never asked me for my MBNA CC number so I think you can just say "I'd like to cancel my MBNA card". They'll then redirect you to customer retention where you can be honest with them and tell them that you don't have a card, but you in fact want to consider something else different from the PC Financial Card. Judging from the enthusiasm I got from both representatives, I don't think this is a problem - they'd be more than happy to start you an account provided you have a reasonable credit history.

Yes, forgot mention this.
It was 19.9% for PRP+. The Rep said she need to change my rate to 13.9% first before converting the card to Smart Cash Card.

Permanent rate. I was offered this rate without even knowing this.
But I always pay off my balance so don't really care. Don't know whether it is related to the offer though.
But I got a call from Canadian Tire MasterCard offer me 10.9% last month. I didn't take it since I don't use it anymore.
13.9% looks like an offer to counter others in ther market.

the MBNA card also has the extended warranty feature as well.
4 main features of the card:
1. extra year warranty on purchases
2. free car rental insurnace on rentals
3. 1% cash back non-tiered
4. no fees
Citi Enrich Platinum card is still better. You get everything mentioned above, plus:
5. Travel Accident and Baggage delay insurance
6. Price protection on purchases (they refund you the difference if you find what you've purchased somewhere else for less with 30 days).
I've had this card for quite a number of years. However, I can't seem to find the card listed on the CitiBank web site. I was only able to find the regular Enrich MC. Maybe you need to call in as a previous poster suggested in order to apply for it.
If you can get it, the Citi Enrich Platinum is far better

Really? As far as I can tell, the ONLY thing that the MBNA card doesn't have that the Enrich has is price protection.
The insurance and coverage appears to far exceed what Enrich Platinum covers - both in free insurance options and in the amount of coverage.

Because I can get higher interest on interest than 1.99% on BT? 2.5% > 1.99% is not complicated math is it?
Yes, the interest rate will change if you get a Premium Rewards or Smart Cash Card.
So instead of issuing me a new card (ie second card), they will just screw me by replacing the existing card (therefore ending the 1.99%)?

No they wont. If you just call and apply, without telling them you wish to convert, they will create a new account (assuming they are able to extend more credit to you above 'n beyond what they've given to you already - ie, credit hit to determine how much more credit you can get).
If they say, sorry, we've extended the maximum amount of credit to you. At that point, your option is to move whatever credit you have available from the existing account to the new account.

I called to upgrade my premier rewards platinum plus card, and like some others here, I was told that I would lose my accumulated rebate. From the all of us that applied for it, we may need to wait until someone has received their Card / Account Terms&Conditions material in the mail and then post it on here for others.
Basically as far as I can see, there is no hard/soft copy from MBNA explaining the details of this Account, its only from word of mouth from MBNA Reps (so no one can say for sure if a certain retail store would qualify for the 3%).

Okay, I called and they said because my rent was higher than my average income (which is pretty much nothing as a student) that my application probably wouldn't go through.
I will probably wait for a month or so until I start working earning an income so that my application doesn't look so poor. Although right now I do have a Visa with $5200 in credit on it. I don't know much about credit but I wonder if that amount of credit from Visa would help me get a card.

Yes and No.

That being said though, I've got the Citi Enrich Platinum as a backup to my 2% AMEX Gold Cash Back card and I love it.
Jam packed with features, no fees. My only complaint is that it pays out once a year (like MOST other cash back cards)
How do you get the 2% AMEX Gold cash back card?

looking at a printed monthly statement, how do you know how much cashback you've accumulated so far?
also, is it worth it to create a login account on the mbna site? the last thing i need is another password to remember.

i didnt know that the pc mastercard awarded 1% cashback....i thought they just gives pc points?
also, lately people have been talking about the 3% groceries and gas, 1% retail cashback card called the Smart Cash card...i rarely buy groceries and dont have a car, so its pretty much worthless for me to switch from the platinum rewards card.

There's also travel insurance, purchase protection and warranty extension plus a few other small things. Most people are moving on to the MBNA Smart Cash which does everything the PRP+ and gives 3% cash back for groceries and gas.
Maybe OP should change the title and first post since the PRP+ is a bit irrelevant now that the Smart Cash has been released.

I just have a question about the Car Rental Insurance included in the PRPP.
After going though their "Guide to coverage", the MasterRental only covers for the rental car & parts and the passengers in the car.
It says "This coverage does not provide any form of third party automobile property damage."
My question is, don't I need to get a 3rd party insurance? Do I need to get it from my car insurance company? or is there another way?
Which credit card do you use for renting a car for a trip?
Thanks in advance,
Mike.

Not sure if this has been asked before. But I do have question:
1) Can you pay rent and/or utility+phone bills with a credit card? If so, is there a surcharge for this?
If that is the case, I can be getting quite a lot of cashback with this card :)

afaik, u cannot pay util with a cc, but phone bills, yes. And rent, depends on your landlord. But mostly, no.

Hello, I've received the card and read over the terms and conditions about their car rental LDW (loss/damage waiver etc..)
Everything seems ok, but there is no coverage for 3rd party liability.
Let say if I happen to get into an accident and the other guys car is damaged, is there any coverage from this card? or should I use my own drivers' insurance to cover the damages?
It seems like all the rental car coverages don't mention about 3rd party liability and I was wondering what you guys usually do when you rent a car.
Any advices would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike.

None of the cards provide third party coverage. When you rent a vehicle, you only buy CDW for physical damage. The rental company carries third party coverage. Outside Canada, it varies and you should arrange coverage with your own company for non-owned auto liability.

I received my smart cash CC yesterday and I wanted to thank all of you that posted this promotion here. It was how I became aware of such a CC existing.
Called up MBNA customer service and after 5 mins on the phone they had approved the new credit card -I already had an account with them though, just switched CC type.
Until now CIBC Dividend CC was the one I used most however, these benefits with smart cash are greatly superior to the Dividend.
Thanks again guys.

I just called 18888766262 as a new customer and was transferred over to new application department (I believe it's an Indian based location). They stated that they do not have the Smart Cash card promotion and gave me the 18888766262 again.. I called again and they were about to transfer me over until I explained I was already transferred once.. he said he needs to transfer me elsewhere but will make sure it works this time. I got a different waiting voice after being transferred and a Canadian sounding guy picked up this time and was able to submit the application for me.
To save you some time, you might want to call 18888766262 straight up and tell them that the regular new application department told you that they didn't have that promotion..
The card detail is the same as everyone posted so far.

I tried calling that number but was only given the option to enter my current account number by their automated service. Decided to call the number on their website, 1.877.862.7759 (http://www.mbna.ca/contact_cards.html#apply). The rep I got asked if I got the Smart Cash card offer in the mail, I told him I got a Platinum Plus offer in the mail but was more interested in the Smart Cash card. Was put on hold for about 3 minutes. When the rep returned he processed my order for the Smart Cash card.

I just called to 'convert' an old and mostly unused MBNA card to a Smart Cash and it took about 10 minutes. Thanks OP :)
I have a few questions though.
I'm not sure whether the rep mentionned the Smart Cash Platinum Plus card, I'm wondering if it was only Smart Cash without the Platinum Plus. Is the Smart Cash card a Platinum Plus card by default or is that a different card with added perks? If my card ends up being a Smart Cash without the Platinum Plus part, can I just call to upgrade it to Platinum Plus or is it more complicated than that?
I'm sorry if those questions have been asked and answered already but I haven't found an answer after a few searches.

but 2% cashback on groceries, gas, pharmacy and recurring bills plus 1% on everything else
the 2% is to a max back of 500 but the 1% isnt capped also, i earn that 40$ back after 2000 spending, which i get in gas a year easily.

You pay 99 cents for every $100 of your average daily balance if you do not pay in full every month. If you lose your job they will make you minimum payments for you up to a certain amount. But I would stay away from all those loss of income insurance type products, unless you never carry a balance.

But I would stay away from all those loss of income insurance type products, unless you never carry a balance.
But even if you pay of your balance every month the "insurance fee" starts summing up from the day ofyour purchase...
Example: you bought something midway through your statements for $300
even though you pay off your invoice right after receiving you still pay ca. 1.50 for your "insurance" ont htat if you card balance is maybe $1000 then you pay ca. $5.00 and if you wait to pay until the due date you pay $3.00 or respective $10.00 for the "Insurance" even if you pay your balance of in full. Thats an eassy way to lull you into a "fee" card on a no fee CC
I testsed it with amex and canceled after the first month after i found out that the "insurance fee" is calculated on your daily balance...
I pay my cards of in full so that i don't have any extra cost... and keep a good rating if I wanted service like that you can get better with fee based CCs.
That same applies to other CCs like MBNA, Desjardins, Scotia etc..
when they phone you just ask at what point the balance calculation for the insurance starts and how it is billed.

quick question, considering a CC at MBNA...
can I pay off an MBNA mastercard (shoppers optimum) online through my bank (TD or CIBC)? I don't have an MBNA chequing account (nor do I plan to open one) and I when browsing the website, online payment/bills didn't seem to be an option . Also, are there any fees/charges that I should be aware of before applying for a credit card at MBNA?

Yes, MBNA is a payment option with most banks on their bill payment websites. MBNA seems to be the only one that has a fee to do a balance transfer (1%, altho you can usually negotiate on the phone for less). Aside from that I don't know of any other regular fees.

Lol i cannot imagine they would deny you. Did you specifically mention smart cash card?
I mean they are giving these away like hotcakes to new clients (i myself was one) but they ask you for a promo code which i think is in this thread. If you give them all the info, they should be able to upgrade your card or give you a new card. If not, just cancel your existing and call in as a new client demanding the smart cash card

According to this (http://www.milliondollarjourney.com/mbna-smart-cash-credit-card-the-new-cash-back-king.htm) the code is CGLE.
I just called MBNA (1-800-347-6262) and asked to apply for the Smart Cash card. I didn't quote a code nor did they ask for one. I got transferred to someone who processed the application, gave me a reference number and said I should find out in 7-10 days. I'll call back in a few days for an update.

+1 The best ones, IHMO, are to get GC for more food places (Jack Astor's Boston Pizza etc) or services (iTunes, Ticketmaster). That way you won't be sacrificing the warranty and other platinum benefits by using the GC.

I applied for the PP first through GCR because I was hoping for the rebate..
It's been a few weeks now.. I wonder how long it takes before they do something.. with all the junk mail MBNA has mailed me over the years, you'd think they'd be excited that I finally responded to something from them.. but no.

Just received my new card in the mail today.
After getting it activated, the CSR told me that yesterday was the last day for this card, that this card no longer exists. I got my card activated however it sounds like they won't be accepting any new applications.
For those that were pondering about signing up for this card, it might be too late?

He also explained that they are expecting a revamp in the next month.

Sounds like BS... what kind of revamp?
BTW Smart cash is now on the mbna website so I don't see how that's a valid claim...

I called again and got a different rep.
When I asked for the Smart Cash card she asked if I had an application. I told her I did not, and her response was "then we do not offer it as of Thursday... unless you have an application."
I said "Well... I have the code."
She asked for the code, I gave it to her, and she processed the application.

On the website, smart cash platinum card already has $0 annual fee.
What's the reason to get a simple one and call in and get to retention center to get that card?
I think I'm getting something wrong here:confused:
