Toronto - Toronto police are commending a dump truck driver who managed to stop a moving vehicle when a man passed out behind the wheel.

The daring turn of events happened just before 10 a.m. Tuesday in a construction zone on Unwin Avenue near Lakefront and Leslie Streets.

Constable Wendy Drummond says the driver noticed a truck swerving slowly towards him with a man slumped over behind the wheel. He then stopped his dump truck, got out, jumped into the passenger door of the moving vehicle and reached in and forced the truck into park to avoid a collision.

A second unknown man also helped stop the truck.

The pair gave the unconcious driver first aid and called 911, but the 73-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say thanks to their heroic actions, "no one else was put in harm's way."

I think it's time to "remove" old fellows from our roads.... they are as dangerous as drunk drivers, luckly no one was hurt in that case.

I think you should stop generalizing and stating your opinion as fact.

I don't see how what the OP said could be construed as them trying to state fact. Looks like it's an opinion to me, and very clearly one at that.

Also one I happen to agree with.

Driving drowsy has already been proven a number of times to be more dangerous than driving drunk (depending on how drunk, but in most cases it is). Therefore driving dead as this fellow was is surely more dangerous than driving drunk, no?

I think you should stop posting, if you have nothing to say.

You need facts?? Call Statistics Canada.

In 2004, the numbers of Canadians killed in crashes
at intersections and those killed in crashes involving
drinking drivers on public roads were almost the same.
However, it must be mentioned that many of the
intersection crashes involved alcohol. Collision data
also show that intersections were particularly
dangerous locations for elderly people. Road users
65 years of age or older accounted for 29% of all
deaths at intersections and for 35% of deaths
at intersections located in urban areas. One
in six victims killed in an intersection crash
during 2004 was a pedestrian.
