So I thought I was going to do the Grouse Grind tomorrow, but it turns out it is still closed. What is a good replacement? Is there another trail that offers the same intense workout?

Burnaby Mountain comes to mind. It's not nearly as intense but some of the trails are alright.

Don't expect the grind to open for another month or two.. it's still snowpacked.
Burnaby mountain is definitely not as intense but it's not a bad replacement

You can also run up and down the stairs for a couple of hours at Trail #6 UBC. ;)
YMMV on the view at the bottom.

Just run; it easily as good and better on your knees then the grind - and by the way - the grind is a tourist thing - only for people who do not know better. Most "in fit" folks consider it a joke.

That being said, the Squamish Chief (2nd/3rd peaks) is quite a workout. Great scenery too, and lots of variety in terrain and obstacles.
Running is just not as much fun.
(tip, go early.....)

There are a gazillion trail runs you can go to in the GVRD; a great book to pick up is 101 day hikes in the lower mainland (or something like that)..aout $15 in most book stores...and you can likely save money by staying in the surrey area....
