horrible deal since they just had the new pn42a450 for $899 last week which demolishes this set in every possible way

ya that's what I thought.. there is not a SINGLE way it's a better tv :|

hell, the PX80 isn't even in the same league as the a450 and the px80 is substantially better than the px77

if you still have SD to watch the PX77 is better than the PX80. I have one and love it to bits, I wouldn't trade it in for a newer model.

For this price it's amazing. Killer image, upscaling, contrast...it kills everything but a Kuro in my opinion. I work on video for a living in a visually critical fashion so I know a thing or two about it as well.

Just curious, what's better on the older model for SD content?

Errr...isn't the PX77 just the PX75 with the pz77 series antiglare coating?
If so I would pass....I prefer all the color getting back to my eyes, never was a fan for last years anti glare coating...dumbed down the picture and made for a duller less vibrant picture.

anti-glare is boss in a bright room, deals with the biggest con of plasma well. I noticed some tighter contrast but that's mainly it in terms of the 75 vs the 77.

SD upscaled to 720p doesn't have as much heavy lifting (eg upscaling) as 1080p to my eyes. It's like stretching a 400 x 300 image to be wallpaper on 800 x 600 vs say, 1280 x 1060. The 1280 will look more like ass.

Good upscaling technology will clean up the image quite a bit (look up macroblocking, one of the evils of upscaling that we fight the good fight against), but the more you're upscaling, the worse the image could look.

That's why for me 720p is fine for now as a lot of SD is still being used on the TV by my fam. Totally depends on your needs (gaming, DVD viewing, digital cable, OTA HD etc) but really, this TV is a great one, you can't lose.

Is this a better buy than the Samsung LN40A450 for $999? I need to have a TV that doesn't reflect light from the side window. Does this anti-glare coating really as good as LCD? I might stay with the Samsung if it isn't. I heard this Samsung is good with SD (which it will be displaying most of the time). Is this Panasonic better on SD?

This set has the anti-glare going for it and it really does a good job. It dulls the picture though.

If you put the PX80 beside it (like it usually is in store) the colors and sharpness just blow the PX77 away.

That's why I brought my PZ77 back for the Samsung deal. The PN42A450 has better colors and was way cheaper.

wheeldeals - SD was fine on both of the sets. A good reason to buy a plasma.

I was looking at this set, and deciding between this, LN40A450 and the PN20A450, and the Panasonic has suddenly disappeared completely from their web site ...

Plasma vs LCD.... decisions, decisions, decisions...
