We went with bamboo floors in the living/dining rooms, but now with our newborn we need to get rugs on top of the bamboo and carpeting in the basement. I'm just wondering if anyone has come across rugs or carpets that are somewhat environmentally friendly. ...less VOCs, toxic dyes, etc. I came across Nature's Carpet, but these cost way too much $$$.

I'm also interested in people's opinions on the advantages or disadvantages of wool, silk or synthetics like polypropylene. We have 3 cats and our baby would be crawling on the rugs a lot, so we'd prefer something that doesn't shed.

Thanks

Try http://www.interfaceinc.com/ but unfortunately they only make commerical style short pile carpeting, but they may be able to point you to someone who does broadloom.

Thanks MacGyver! I've been checking out Flor and their environmental policies and practices are great.

Anyone out there use it for a baby/kids room or living room? The textures are tough to discern online, so I'm planning on getting some samples sent in order to find the right soft texture (6 for $6).

You're welcome. Call Interface and ask them who their Toronto distributor(s) are. There should be a showroom somewhere that will have samples you can view.

Our new church building that is nearing completion used Interface carpet tile throughout. In the nursery, some of the carpet tiles have a letter or number on them. So you can get really creative with patterns and colours to fit a room theme.
