I love going into Bakeries.Who else?
Hey! Even looking through the window is great.
There are so many good ones........ Dufflet good but over rated i think,Riviera on College, simply too many to mention.
One thing is for sure they can't test Asian Bakeries.
Asian bakeries are the greatest.
I like everything,i just love to eat.
What are some of you'r favourite places and specialties?
Have you ever been to a bad bakery/Patisserie before?

Malta Bake Shop. Dundas St west (near Runnymede) in the middle of Malta village. Excellent Italian (oops, sorry, Maltese) munchies. Appearantly, they sell their pastizzi to supermarkets too.

I love the smell of a bakery..... takes me back to when I was a kid. My Dad and I would pickup fresh Maple and Chocolate donuts every Sunday at the Oshawa Bakery.
Stittsville and Richmond Bakeries have great stuff.....
Richmond's donuts are amazing. Easily beats any of the nation-chain guys...

i like chinese bakeries too. oh so yummy. i love the the long buns filled with coconut and "butter" mixture - been eating them since i was a little kid although hard to find bakery that adds the butter or margarine in the mixture now. egg custard tarts are delish. bbq pork buns....i love the big sponge cupcakes and especially the cake slices with some whip cream and fruit cocktail in between the layers... so hungry now. :P

IMO they are the worst. Asian desserts=bland, bland, bland.
Nothing beats Italian bakeries.
An average Cannoli beats anything I have ever had in an Asian bakery, never mind getting into better things like Tiramisu.
Those Asian golden cakes wrapped in plastic (kind of like a big Twinkie), are so bland. Very little sweetness and no flavor.
But then again, all my Asian friends say the stuff I like is all too strong and sweet.
The only good dessert at Mandarin is the cheese cake. All the other cakes are so bland there too.
Anyone care to give their opinions on the best Italian bakery in the GTA?

part of the problem with asian bakeries is traditionally desserts are not a large part of their historical cuisine (pre-colonial times)...you can look back to the t'ang dynasty about 1400yrs ago at the "height" of China's culture...and the main "dessert" dish was honey fed baby mice eaten alive.
but back to the future, many SE asian countries real exposure to desserts came from colonialists like the Portuguese/English and then adapted to local indredients....so there you go...bad first contact with sweets compunded by a lack of historical exploration of desserts to boot equal a pretty bland dessert. Look at Indian desserts - talk about nothing but melted sugar with milk and colouring.
but in my opinion, italian desserts are just too much based on creams...my preference is Belgian/German/French/Austrian for cakes, streudels and assorted fruit flan pastries.
Now if you ever get to GVA, i can suggest LeBeaus near Granville island and a few other choice patisseries...

You can't even start to use Mandarin as the basis of asian dessert. However the previous forum poster made a good point. Chinese people don't really eat dessert, and definately don't eat a lot of sweet desserts. so of course if you need something sweet, then Chinese pastries are not right for you.

I like those long coconut and pineapple buns. My mom used to get them all the time from Cake World at Midland/steeles. I love that place. Got all my bday cakes as a kid from there. Still go there if I go for korean bbq in the same plaza.

I second this place. and yes, MALTESE not Italian lol! pastizzi are great there!
btw: pastizzi are a flaky pastry filled with ricotta cheese on the inside, and baked in the oven until golden brown and ever so tasty!

Well, there are plenty of Asian Bakeries in the GVRD. I would hafta say, I go to different places for different pastries. If I want cake, I'd recommend the one in Downtown near the waterfront for a more Caucasian feel. Birthday cakes I get from Anna or Maxims. If I wanted Wintermelon pastry, I would get it from Kam Do in Richmond.

Asian bakeries are fine for everyday eating etc.... Queen's Bakery at Peachtree Plaza at Hwy 7 & Kennedy is one of the better ones in Markham.... otherwise I find they use too much lard and fat....
The best bakery of all time is Rahier Patisserie.... amazing French breads and even better cakes etc......
For everyday non-Asian bakeries Baguette suffices though... their chocolate almond croissants always satisfy cravings =)

I love egg tarts. I used to buy them all the time at a bakery on McCowan, near Steeles (Alton Towers). It closed recently. Does anyone know what happened to the bakery? (I think that it was called Perfect Bakery).
The bakery was called Lovely Pastry. I miss that bakery, too. I used to buy strawberry cakes from there for every special occasion my family had. Can anyone recommend a Scarborough Asian bakery for cakes?

The bakery closed down for a while but is open now. I went in yesterday & it is completely different. They offer sit-in now w/ HK milk tea and the buns/pastries were so limited & did not look very appealing, just went in & out.
A good bakery for cakes in Scarborough would be either "Cakewood Bakery", (inside Woodside Square, Finch & McCowan) they offer eggless cakes & presentation is not bad or "Windsor" (Pmall/ Market Village), presentation is very pretty & offer many unconventional flavours e.g. taro, chestnut

No one mentioned German bakeries
I really like Stubbe chocolates and bakery. They have a lot of rich German cakes thay make from scratch and every day u can get a slice of 1 or 2 different cakes...usually u have to buy a whole cake, but slices are $3 about.
If they are too rich they have a great apple strudel there and sometimes a plum one too...
http://www.stubbechocolates.com/cakesandpastries.html
-they have a location in Toronto now :)
I used to always go to the ottawa one on my break from class to buy a slice of cake or strudel and coffee!
the handmade truffles are delicious too!
653 Dupont Street, Toronto
Phone 416-923-0956
-from their website, not sure where in Toronto that is exactly....
In ottawa there is also a very good and cheap Portuguese bakery where they make coconut macaroons and also these egg tarts with jam in the middle....;)

I think it's like either by Midland and Ellesmere or Midland and Eglinton.
Does anyone know this place?

I think that a French patisserie beats any Asian bakery.
The ingredients and techniques are not comparable. Invariably, you'll get the comments that it's too sweet or too rich, but that comes from an immature palate that simply equates fine dining to higher prices.

like any other food catagory - there are differences in tastes... so there really isn't any basis of comparisons between different countries... all are unique. I for one like trying different pastries - grew up eating Chinese bakeries... now whenever I get a chance, I try different ones.
Recently tried a Russian bakery on Bathurst north of Steeles, and think south of Centre... totally forgot the name, but they have very good pastries.

Got a mocha torte from Stubbe's on Dupont at Christie. Very smooth ganache, absolutely yummy! pleased everyone and was divine with a cup of coffee. Def will go and get another one soon!
For my 2 cents, Le Comptoire de Celestin at Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton have the best chocolate croissants and brioche.

Chinese cakes in general are not as sweet as Italian/French cakes or pastries. I think the chinese prefer a less sweet desert, as it can get over powering.
I personally love chinese bakeries. To me, nothing beats an egg tart with the flake crust (not that cheap shortbread kind), and a cup of coffee. Oh, or maybe a Coconut bun with a cup of Yin Yang (coffee and tea mixture).

My favourite bakery is Petit Paris on Haines Rd. in Mississauga. They've been around forever (used to have a location on Bloor) and make awesome cakes. Their cherry kirsch cake is just awesome. It's run by an old couple from Vienna, and I highly recommend it, esp. for cakes. My parents have been ordering cakes from there for 20+ years.

A buddy from work used to bring me something what he called "sweet buns" and I just loved them. A sort of sugary filling with a lighter dough and maybe a bit of a flour/sugar sprinkling on top. I think they're a dim sum treat. Haven't had them for years, anyone know where on 97th street I could find these on a Saturday morning in Edmonton?
