What VOIP provider do you suggest?

Hey guys,

I was wondering on what VOIP provider do you highly suggest? Although I have no "concrete" plans at this time on having my own VOIP line, I just want to have some feedback on what is the best VOIP provider for my value. If this doesn't fit in, there's always a prepaid long distance card.

Anyways, here's my example that I want you guys to follow:

Let's say I have a friend (or in this case my uncle) who lives in Surrey, B.C. Their area code is 604/778. My uncle's phone number is in a 604 area code. Back in Ajax, Ontario (where my area code is 905/289), I want to have a 778 area code so I can call my friend to his traditional landline (and no, I'm not dumping my traditional landline that I have in my house, FYI).

By the way, I use my high-speed cable connection for my internet activities. Any suggestions?

Vonage is OK; it's good if you don't want to fuss with settings and stuff.

Otherwise take a look at unlimitel- it's a full service VoIP provider.

My parents in Calgary signed up for Shaw cable phone. It uses coax cable... and the modem is in thier basement and is connected to all the phone jacks in the house.

The original landline phone number was transfered over to the cable phone... works exactly the same as a landline.....you keep your phone number and you can call North America for free.

I don't know if shaw offers that service on the east or don't know if rogers does.

rogers does, shaw isn't big enough to do it... they're only big in western canada...

Shaw was big in Ontario, but they did a region swap with Rogers. Telecom in Canada is a oligopoly...

i know they had shaw in some areas of the GTA, but that all disappeared... aside from cable, they had nothing else...

FYI, Shaw is pretty much cable and telecom :) They only entered the wireless market a couple weeks ago during the spectrum auction.

Rogers/Shaw consolidated their regions in 1994/2001 by swapping their cable service areas.

yes i know about the auction spectrum.. and FYI, they didn't have telecom until like 3 yrs ago... so they were only cable.. and sat (starchoice subsidiary)
