Current world No.1 Team is "Team 2ch", with the following details:
Members (Rank) 39,130 (# 1)
Current Members 37,085
Retired Members 2,046
Total CPU Time(y:d:h:m:s) (Rank) 12,912:300:14:41:46 (# 1)
Points Generated (Rank) 1,686,175,045 (# 1)
Results Returned (Rank) 9,758,239 (# 1)
Averages
Avg. CPU Time Per Calendar Day (y:d:h:m:s) 12:195:21:41:03
Avg. CPU Time Per Result (y:d:h:m:s) 0:000:11:35:31

Avg. Points Per Result 172.79501
Avg. Points Per Calendar Day 1,637,063.15
Avg. Results Per Calendar Day 9,474.02
I doubt we have 39,000 members here to make up a team, but I think it'll be great to put some CPU time to good use. Shall we have a team then?
***Update***
I've created a team at UD named "RFD - Canada".
To join, first install UD agent (Download from here (http://www.grid.org/download/gold/download.htm)), and create an account or use your current account if you already have one. Then login to the website, on the left hand side, you'll find a link to "Teams" listings. "RFD - Canada" is currently on the 13th page under "R". Come and join! (Quick Link to the page (http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=0D56D6C6-E801-4192-9A7F-D76D56C9A571))

More on UD ...
AUSTIN, Texas, January 7, 2004 — United Devices™, the market leader in secure grid solutions, today announced that the number of PCs and servers involved in the company's global Grid (grid.org) has surpassed 2.5 million. These servers, workstations, desktops and notebooks join together from over 200 countries and territories to help speed grand-scale cancer and small pox research.
For the full press release, here (http://www.ud.com/company/news/press/01072004.htm).

Before you jump in, I wanna share a few points ...
1. Your machine(s) will be on all the time, this will incur costs (e.g. electricity).
2. It will push your CPU to its limit during the whole process. This will definitely push your CPU cooling to its limit too !
3. I suggest you configure it to run it as a screensaver rather than a normal process as it will slow down your normal work. Unfortunately, you will lose your favorite swimsuit screensaver  ... UD will take over.
4. Since your machines will be up 24/7, configure your monitor to go to sleep. This will definitely save your monitor as well as your energy bill. Monitor in sleep mode usually consumes only ~ 5W.
5. It is more effective for those who have 'always-on' internet connection as it needs to send and receive data back and forth. It will also work with dial-up. It will hold the results until you connect to the net.
Just my $0.02. My machines are always-on and I feel bad wasting my CPU cycles B)

Willy, UD runs as a low priority process, therefore, any normal priority programs will always have a bigger slice of CPU time. The slow down is really quite minimal unless you change the priority.
I personally run UD 24/7, and I turn off the UD screensaver because it just uses quite a bit of CPU time just to render the screen, I much rather having the CPU time used for UD crunching away.

Im not sure how or if its helping but just the chance that it might is good enough for me... It doesnt hinder the use of the computer at all and im pretty sure its not sending info that it shouldnt be, it seems safe to me!
come on people lets try and fight disease!
Could a mod move this too "off-topic" or somewhere with more traffic im sure there would be more support if that happened!

Jim you can just crunch cancer molecules. Do the following.
Double click the blue egg in the taskbar
Click Settings in the lower right
Log in
Click Profiles
Click Default settings
Check that there is only a tick beside the cancer research and nothing beside the smallpox.
Done.
I used to crunch cancer units only but changed as I figured we could all die of smallpox while trying to find the cancer cure. However, cancer is my main concern.
Keep crunching guys and gals we definitely need to win this one.

Its only showing how much of the h/d the program can use if it has too. You can configure it to the highest which is 10gigs. NOt that its gonna use that much space but i think its that big so that it ensures enough space for future projects if need be.
Anyway open the interface up
Click "View your Device List"
Click under the heading "Slected Profile"

A lot of computers waste CPU cycles; if you're browsing the Web and using IM, you're not exactly taxing your system.
What this does is use those spare cycles to perform calculations; different clients do different things. In this case, UD does (primarily) disease research; analysis of proteins used to fight cancer, and the like.
This is the best one I've come across; Folding@Home kept crashing on me (leaving me with wasted work units), and SETI@Home is too nebulous a cause. Fighting cancer, that's cool with me.

so with this we can actually find cures for diseases? does everyone connect to some sort of network and upload results?

Similar to most of the distributed computing projects out there, your system will obtain a small task (out of a very large pool) via the internet connection to compute and execute at a very low priority. Depending on the computing power of your system, it may take a few hours to several days. When it is done, it will upload the results back to the server machine. And the whole process repeats.

Sounds quite interesting, has any of this actually found a cure for a disease? Cause if it did.. then we can really change the world..
Im a little hesitant because Im not able to leave my computer on 24/7/365.. so if I leave it on for 2 days then restart or shut off, will it break the sequence and restart all over again when I turn computer back on? Or will it resume where it left off?

Eventually, it will lead to cures.
Yes, we all upload data onto the network. Each task we get is also sent to many others, for extreme redundancy.

I'm a member of the World Community Grid (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/) and a member of team Canada (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=4C21G7R9N)! I'd like to invite you all to come over to us as the current Human Proteome Folding Project (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/about_the_project.html) is much broader in scope and its a philanthropic project supported by IBM. All results will be made available in the public domain.
"World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community."
"World Community Grid is focusing on a project key to advancing our knowledge of human disease. By identifying the proteins that make up the Human Proteome, scientists can build the understanding needed for novel and effective treatments for diseases like cancer, HIV/AIDS, SARS, and malaria."
Please consider coming over and joining team Canada. We are the 3rd largest team on the WCG and we are pushing to become #2!
Crunching for Canada!

It's very similar but without some of the 'issues' I have heard of at grid.org
The WCGs aim is to get 1 million+ members and move on to other projects when the current one is completed.

one more thing...
at grid.org, which is owned and operated by United Devices to show their grid technology in action, there is not guarantee that the research you may do will make it into the public domain (the Human Proteome Folding Project sponsored by ISB will be but that doesn't mean other projects will be)
But the World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of their commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community.

no, a small packet(work unit(WU)) is downloaded to your computer, when it's done it sends the results back and gets another WU. Depending on your computer's speed and the 'size' of the WU, it can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to complete a WU. On my 2.6 mhz P4 the average run time of a WU is about 8 hrs.
Your computer will only communicate with the server when it downloads the results and gets a new WU.

Almost all the work my app ends up doing is the Proteome; WCG looks interesting, but I don't have the horsepower to run both. :)

I setup my UD client to run as a screen saver so it kicks in whenever the system is idle. All my machines are on 24/7. It's been like that since Apr 2001.

As long as your cooling is sufficient, you are gonna to be just fine. Afterall, CPU is designed and built to run http://www.dolnetwork.com/RFD/smilies/computer.gif

The thing is ... If it reaches 60's with UD, it will reach 60's with other CPU-intensive applications. This is not good. UD is just an ordinary computer application and it's no difference from any other CPU-intensive applications. Not running UD doesn't mean you don't have the overheating problem, you know. I would suggest you look deeper into this issue.
Just curious, have you tried the stock HSF ??

It hits 60's with most major apps; running UD Agent, it's 60 all the time. :(

And why is their site so slow?! It doesn't even show me as a member yet!

I wanted to use my laptop but I find that it gets too hot even running it for 10 minutes. The HD gets hot around 55 celcius. I have a pretty old desktop .. hopefully my fans can cool it enough ...
Yeah, it does get warm, but I don't really mind.. I also use a laptop cooler to help things out..
I don't run it full time on the laptop, just when i'm really not doing much else :]

Any suggestions? I've tried FF and IE. Opened up everything in Zonealarm as well.
All is good! Have successfully joined the RFD team!

Dang it! I can't log into the GRID site to check my stats cuz the stupid thing keeps on saying:
An error has occurred while processing your request. Please try your request again or return to the previous page.
Oh well whatever. I'm in Europe for the summer, and occassionally turn UD on my laptop, but it gets too hot. Back at home in Canada, I've left my main rig on 24/7 with UD though. :cheesygri

I have 2 constantly running machines for UD:
One is an Athlon64 3500 at my cottage OCed to 3800 levels.
The other is a Presler 945 3.4GHZ OCed to 4.25GHZ here at home.
My Pentium M 2GHZ laptop sometimes runs, too.
I'm gonna try to add a Prescott 3GHZ OCed to 3.2GHZ to the account one of these days.
The RFD team should grow still though - there are so many members with killer rigs who aren't in it...
