The only problem with Costco is if you see it, buy it.
The one on Dundas (off winston churchill) had nearly a full skid of books as would most stores, but I wouldn't expect them to be there this time next week.
Hope everyone can pick one up.

+1! Great find.
Low expectations for the movie, though. The actors are too young, IMO. Aw Hollywood...

I don't see how they will be able to translate the themes, etc. into a Hollywood movie. It'll likely be just a typical superhero CGI movie. Or if they are able to carry over the themes, the typical teenage movie-goer will tell his friends that the movie sucked 'cause there was too much talking and not enough stuff blowing up and the box office sales will tank.

After seeing the trailer, I was actually much more interested to see it. I was afraid that the movie wouldn't be dark enough or would become just another superhero movie, but it looks to be pretty serious. In this day and age where people are accustomed to the likes of 300, Sin City, I'm confident that they can pull it off
I agree though, the actors are too young. At least they pulled off the costumes. Rorshach looks awesome.
Also, I wonder what the running time would be... With the amount of content the graphic novel has, I hope they're able to do it justice by not cutting out a lot from the book.

if you look at the cast
you'll see that there are almost "two" versions of every hero
one old and one young
the trailer might only show the young people but you'll notice the cast is pretty old if u look into it.

I hope there will still be stock when I go on the weekend. I saw the trailer during TDK and was very intrigued.
Might even pick up 2 copies.
Thx!

This is a great read, even if you aren't into comics. Back in 2005 Time ranked this as one of the 100 greatest novels of all time. Note that's their ranking of all novels, not comics or graphic novels. Its well worth the price costco is charging.

Speaking of graphic novels.... Coscto also had the latest colourized version of Bone (#8 Treasure Hunters) on for $6.50. Great price for a good series. I had picked up some earlier editions (4-7) previously at Costco at that price too.

I know Alan Moore wasn't satisfied with it, but The Killing Joke was another good read.
I'm hoping the Watchmen movie does the comic justice. It's been years since I've read it so I may have to go to my parents and see if it's still boxed up.

Where did you find this? I checked IMDB.com http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409459/fullcredits
I read somewhere that they opted to cast younger actors because its easier to age people than to make them look younger for the flashbacks.

i'm probably just "assuming"
cuz they have a version 1 and version 2 of most of the heroes
when i looked at the cast earlier i realized they were all pretty old
aka most of them are in their 30-40's naturally...
i figured when u said they were really young u were talking about the other versions.
anyways sorry i must be confusing don't worry about me lol.
ur idea of old vs my idea of old is probably different haha

I think they can do it. I don't think they'll be incorporating the black freighter parallel story, but I think the movie will be quite faithful. Rated R so you don't need to worry about the teenage movie-goer, not to mention Watchmen has a HUGE following and doesn't need those teenage movie-goers to be a success.

Picked one up tonight for my wife (who was pretty intrigued after seeing the trailer). Beats digging out my polybagged copies of the original run that I have somewhere in my basement.
Also suggest getting the colorized versions of Bone if you can find it. Great all ages story - kind of like an old Disney cartoon mashed up with Lord of the Rings.

Naw, by old, I mean OLD... 50+ish
I guess you haven't read the graphic novel yet... the main characters in the story are a group of retired superheroes, all of whom are past their prime. Haven't seen what Rorshach's real face in the film is like, but I always imagined him to look like David Caruso (CSI Miami) but uglier
When they talk about version 1 and version 2 of the superhero.. those are totally different characters... ie. v1 Silk Spectre is the mother of v2 Silk Spectre. Just like how throughout the years there are several versions of Robin, The Flash, Green Lantern, etc.

I think the went with the "younger" retired heroes so that they can age them accordingly. The time frame between the Watchmen being active and post-Keene (?) act is around 10 years (not sure, been years since I read the comic), so for adults, most of the time they don't get really "old" in that time.
The V1 characters also use relatively young actors since there are flashbacks to when they were younger. I haven't checked IMDB in a few weeks for this, so I am only going by memory which may or may not be correct.

No way. The second they said Jackie Earle Haley was playing Rorschach, I was psyched. I don't think they could have picked a better person for the role. As for the rest of them, well, only time will tell.
And yeah, get this graphic novel. It's amazing. Not only one of the best graphic novels of all time, but one of the best novels, period.

A live body and a dead body contain the same number of particles. Structurally, there's no discernible difference. Life and death are unquantifiable abstracts. Why should I be concerned?
Yeah ...
