View Full Version : FutureShop: Taking used Games for Store Credit! Selling Used Games! TIVs INCLUDED!!
Lancer2004
Sep 20th, 2008, 08:15 PM
FutureShop is accepting Video Games for store credit now. The girl even mentioned that their TIV is better than EB's. I didn't get any TIV's because you need to actually bring the game in for the TIV to be shown. Crazy.. Also, they sell used games now..
EDIT: Gathered some more info; here's what I got (feel free to add to it. Post here or PM me):
All quotes in this thread were taken from responses on people on the "cheapassgamer" site or the "futureshop" forums. They've listed some TIV's there:
FutureShop only accepts PS2 games from last Generation. GBA, GC, and Xbox games are NOT accepted. FutureShop does NOT accept Sports Games older than 2 years. (EG: NHL 08 and NHL 09 they will accept on a trade in. NHL 07 they will not.) You can only trade in a maximum of 3 copies of the same game at one time.
ALSO:: IMPORTANT:: Note that every time you bring in games you can NOT put it on the same card... They card they give you is a "Store Credit" card and is not a "gift card". So you CANNOT put money back on it. You can also not use more than 1 card on a purchase... stupid.. i know. I'm sure this will change..
Trade in Credit can be used on services AND ALL MERCHANDISE! Ipods...macs...ps3...whatever!
FutureShops formula for trade value:
USED price:
Divided by 2
Minus 10%
=Trade value!!!!
Example:
Mario Galaxy USED 39.99
Divided by 2 =$20!
Minus 10%
Final Value=$18
This is the formula for ALL GAMES!
I'm not going to confirm anything until someone posts in THIS thread from RFD OR if there was several reports on the other site with the same TIV. Post or PM me and i'll update the OP. :) I'll keep it nice and up to date too.

Would they take in old games from like PS2 and Xbox? Also, Nintendo GBA games? If so, that would be nice especially if they give a better value than EB.

Yep. I was told it was done this past Monday.

I'm not too sure to be honest. I saw they had Xbox/PS2/GC games underneath the used 360/ps3/wii games but i didnt pay close enough attention to see if they were used or not..
Also, they said for the moment its just games but they're looking into taking used game systems in too. Just not at the moment..
To me, futureshop creidt is better than EB credit. Ill take my games there unless EB had a better TIV by a fair margin.

Thanks Lancer 2004! I guess I will pay a visit to FS soon and check for myself. I agree that FS credit is better since EB is limited to only games that I have to buy.

Its true. Starting on Sept 15 Futureshop is introducing the TiV games to compete with EBgames.
But this project is still in works and is only be implement at a few stores. Depends on the result this is going be wide spread.
Unlike EBgames just takes in games doesn't even care if its scratch up or not they sell it back to the next customer. Futureshop will take the game back and if there are scratches on it they'll send it back to 3rd Party to have the discs repair/ buffer it and then send it back to the stores for resell. So ppl don't have to test the discs out and find out it doesn't work and brings it back. *hassle free*

This is really good news and I'm happy to see that someone at FS's head office realized the potential. More surprising, is that the formula that they are using seems quite reasonable when trading in games.

I went today and traded in 7 games for $100 credit. Confirmed several Xbox 360 titles. Confirmed that Xbox, GBA, and GC are not accepted. Maximum of 3 copies of the same game at one time. Only sports game of this year and last year are accepted. Anything before that is not..

I traded in the following today - so these are now Confirmed!
Mass Effect (X360) $22.80
Guitar Hero 3 <game only> (X360) $22.80
Virtua Fighter 5 (X360) $22.80
Also - I asked about several older DS / PSP games. Here's the list:
Loco Roco (PSP) $3.60
Virtua Tennis: World Tour (PSP) $2.00
Retro Atari Classics (DS) $2.00
Ridge Racer DS (DS) $2.00
Asphalt Urban GT (DS) $2.00
Mr. Driller Drill Spirits (DS) $3.60
Spiderman 2 (DS) $2.00
Rayman DS (DS) $3.60
BTW: I had a gift card already but the store would not let them combine the two cards into one card. The Trade In Card says, "STORE CREDIT" on it and is not like a regular gift card. I asked them if this would be a problem if I wanted to purchase a big ticket item as I could potentially have 10 gift cards. They said the system only allows for 3 gift cards / store credit cards to be used in one purchase.

Maximum of 3 copies of the same game at one time. .
Hmm that could be painfull if the rfd hoarders discover pricing disparity
That formula is trying to get a larger spread then Blockbuster gets. It may be better then the "regular" eb tiv, but with the frequent promos at eb it isn't too exciting.

ok so I went in today and almost hit the gold mine, i asked to have the list for 360 to be printed off, the awesome rep tried but it messed up only printing half the page, when he asked manager was told they could not do that #must be a big secret#.
So while processing my order he let me flip through the lists while waiting, too bad didnt have a photographic memory.
What I found was there are only around 10 360 games at the 22.80. Most newer are 18 or less.
So eEB/BBV are still better for some newer games. They don't have the newest games that are just out.
There were only 3 Wii games more then 18.00, Zelda was one of them. The most you will get for a DS game is $13.00. The ps2 games were only like 30 they accept and they are the newest ones or the ones with a movie tie-in. Also watch their system glitches where it quoted 15.60 but the sign out system list 3.60. He said it happens alot. The initial quote is what you get not the 3.60 so watch that. I think my buddy got taken with that with two worlds. I have got enough to start to look at tvs so its a good alternative to EB/BBV, most of the games i have dumped are ones the others wouldnt take. I think when its done they will have EBs entire inventory of guitar hero 3 as I have done 3 copies myself and their used section already has 10 copies from the calgary launch getting flooded haha. Please post your TIV so we can see which is the best option.

zoro69
Oct 3rd, 2008, 08:23 PM
THey rearranged the games and have a few used oens here, no mention of trading in anywhere. But the prices are largely ridiculous. most of the games are crap, a lot of ones from thr zellers 19.99 "value" shelf. Stuff like wii dream pinball, $20 new all the time at zellers, often 255, or even 50% off, is 21.99 used at fs.

hm... last time we discussed this, you could only use the credit towards games....
the change is def.'ly a good one
BTW, interesting to find out how FS calcs their TIVs... much more comprehensive than EBG where you're always guessing
---------
Would they take in old games from like PS2 and Xbox? Also, Nintendo GBA games? If so, that would be nice especially if they give a better value than EB.
last time this was discussed, only next-gen and portable (PSP/DS) games were accepted.

Wow, this is good news. I am no fan of FS/BB by any means, but they actually have regular sales on new titles. I remember picking up Burnout and COD4 for $39.99 within a few weeks of release, and to think I can now do something similar with just 2 trade-ins that no longer qualify at EB for their promos!
Someone ask neksus (real nicely) to add another column to his tivs.ca website

ok did i just hit a gold mine trade in here?
at the rogers 30% off deal, you could have picked up genji for 14 dolalrs + tax...
btw all games i talk about are for ps3
according to futureshops website, genji is 64.99!
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10075751&catid=
that would give a TIV of 65/2 = 32.50 x 0.9 = 29.25
basically double what you you would have paid at rogers for it!!!
seems like a good deal to me! price could be different in store tho
also.. lair has a TIV of 27 according to this above.. and it should be this as i picked it up from FS with a pricematch during walmarts anniversary sale for like 14 dollars... i should paly the game, beat it and then trade it in and gain about 10 dollars :)
turok should also get you 27!
virtua tennis 3 would be 22.50...not bad if u got it during the loblaws sale for 14 dollars
ques: the 27 dollars is After taxes whereas EB is before taxes correct?

I traded in a few games (it took forever for their system to respond!) and this is what I roughly got.
Devil May Cry 4 (PS3) $22 --> $15 TIV at EB
Condemned 2 (PS3) $22 --> $17 TIV at EB
Dark Sector (PS3) $13 --> $5 TIV at EB
MLB08 (PSP) $13 --> $2 TIV at EB
Alien Syndrome (PSP) $6 --> $2 TIV at EB
I took advantage of their Trade 3 - get LBP for 50% off promo (goes for Fable II as well) so I got ~$80 in credit on a FS gift card, and a coupon that allows me to buy LittleBigPlanet for $29.99.
P.S. Apparentlly, they don't require manuals but they are pretty picky about scratches and it must be the original case

maybe i should go and do this to get LBP since i keep hearing its going to own... lol..well it would only cost you 14 more to preorder on amazon.ca if u wanted to keep your games...
is condemned 2 worth playing? i picked it up at rogers 2 for 40 a while back and never played it.. its still in rogers reshrinkwrap... '

Oct 11th, 2008, 09:28 PM
The formula posted above cant apply to all games.
eg "Need for Speed Carbon = $3.60 (confirmed)"
Would imply they are selling it used for $8, but its more then that, double I think. Also all the DS/PSP prices above would imply they are virtually giving them away if the trade in values posted above were based on the formula, I don't think they'd be selling locoroco for $8. Most of the used prices seem outrageously expensive. some higher then brand new games every day price at zellers, toys etc.
That formula may well be correct for the higher prices ones, but not for the less desirable ones.

Traded in three games at Ottawa South Keys Future Shop today.
Got the coupon for 50% off, and the credit was really good!
PS3 Lair - $22.80
360 Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End - $18.00
360 The Darkness - $10.80
So wound up with $51.60 on a card and the coupon. Very good deal considering I paid $8 for the 360 games at BBV, and $18 for Lair in the Walmart sale.
I also checked TIVs for but didn't trade in
PS3 - Stuntman Ignition - $.3.60
PS3 - Burnout Paradise - $13.xx

BTW: I had a gift card already but the store would not let them combine the two cards into one card. The Trade In Card says, "STORE CREDIT" on it and is not like a regular gift card. I asked them if this would be a problem if I wanted to purchase a big ticket item as I could potentially have 10 gift cards. They said the system only allows for 3 gift cards / store credit cards to be used in one purchase.
hm... last time i talked w/ a knowledgeable CSR, they said they fixed that... the system could take "unlimited" # of GCs
personally i've yet to test that, but i thought the max. 3 GCs per transaction prblm was a thing of the past...
anyway, it's not that big a prblm. just a bit of hassle to get CSR to combine multiple GCs into 1. that's all

None of my games seemed to work for this promo because they do not take in games without UPC (ie. Halo 3 from Legendary edition, GH3 game from bundle).
FIFA 08 (Xbox 360) - $8.40
Jackass The Game (PS2) - Not accepeted
>:(
Oh well I pre-ordered Fable 2 CE from EBG anyways so its no biggie.

PS3 - Burnout Paradise - $13.xx
so basically when you pick up the game, you give them your coupon and you could use your card that you got credit on to pay for the rest of the game? (29.99)
that. is. awesome.

I honestly hope FS and moves like this put EB out of business in Canada, or at least severely hamper them. I really hate that craphole.
eb do have some good trade-in deals though...
for me, the more places the better...more options...

BBV taking trades didn't make a dent in EB, I wouldn't expect FS to. Business probably poised to get better for them with the huge Canada Post rake hike coming in Jan and the way ebay is going.
Some day distribution will go online only and that will be the end of DVD/game retail altogether. Probably not that many years away.

really good point but personally I've been surprised at how fast things are going digital recently. Microsoft really kicked things up a notch with their netflix integration and allowing people to rip dvds to their HDs means that bigger games might be moving to digital distribution. They certainly have the pieces in place for it now.

FutureShops formula for trade value:
USED price:
Divided by 2
Minus 10%

Example:
Mario Galaxy USED 39.99
Divided by 2 =$20!
Minus 10%
Final Value=$18
This is the formula for ALL GAMES!

what's the point of having the formula there?
why do we care how they calculate the TIV from their used prices?
i think we are more interested in how they derive on the TIV from reg price instead...
their TIV from used price calculation is irrelevant information for us...at least for me...

Just came back from FS
360
NHL 08 - 8.40
The Darkness - $10.80
Condemned 1 - 6.00
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - 3.60
Kameo - 3.60
Oblivion (regular edition or CE) 13.20
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - 3.60
Spider-Man 3 - 8.40
On a odd side note while the checking the price for Splinter Cell: Double Agent ($3.60) they had Splinter Cell: Conviction in their system and the TIV was 13.20. Sucks for a game that's not even out yet :D

Just wait until FS has a lot of used games on hand and then the TIV's won't be as high. Most of these companies TIV's has to do with how many copies of a particular title they have on hand. If they have like 20 copies of last years sport title and they can't get rid of them of course they're only gonna give you a few bucks.

Ottawa, Kanata:
$8.40 Assassin's Creed
~$11 Kingdom Under Fire
Ottawa, Ottawa South:
$22.80 Halo 3
$22.80 Assassin's Creed
$22.80 Mass Effect
$22.80 Kingdom Under Fire
$13.80 Forza Motarsport 2
$13.80 Project Gotham Racing 4
I can tell you that Kanata has a lot more video game traffic than Ottawa South...so it really depends on stock and YMMV.

a lil OT, but their TIV system works more/less like EBG.
although some TIVs may be better than EBG/BBV, they still try to sell at 100% profit, if not more
some games that have ~$8 TIV, i've looked on their shelves and PPed is like $30! (200%+ profit)
starting to gimme the impression that FS is like EBG now...
but that said, given an extra option to trade vs. BBV vs. EBG, there's more competition... which is certainly to our benefit =)

I prefer EB. They have more selection, better customer service and they know a lot more about games as opposed to FS. I remember back in the days of Music World and Sam the record man. I always got better service at Music World so I'd buy there even if Sams was cheaper.
