Hey everyone! Good to finally start a thread here at RFD.:D

I am an 18 year old male and my family is going to get a 3rd car very shortly for my commute to university. Currently my mom and dad both have a car each. My mom has a minivan in her name and my dad has a car through his business. Both cars are insured through the same insurance company.

This is where the problem occurs. As an 18 year old male insurance is very expensive so I was wondering if I can take advantage of my father not having a vehicle in his name. So I can have my dad be the owner of the car and therefore the insurance can be in his name.

My dad called and of course they claim this is not possible. My dad is the type of silly person that will believe it.

IMO this is an insurance company and they are trying to make as much money as possible (no doubt there is a commission cut for the rep too).

For a basic used car I am looking at at least 5000$ a year(at least), but if my dad is listed as a primary driver, it would probably be 1500$ a year plus the secondary driver fee for myself but I pay that already. (I think that is 125 a month but that should go down once i get my "G" license. (right?)

Does anyone here have some recommendations on what to do?
Is what I am trying to accomplish possible?
Any details or clarification needed, just let me know.

You're not really asking advice on how to defraud an insurance company are you? If you are, remember that when the insurance denies your accident claim so you don't come on here complaining about the "big bad insurance company screwing people over".

You will have 3 vehicles, and you will be the third driver on that 3rd vehicle.

Get caught comitting fraud with this and the whole family will be blacklisted and sent to Facility insurance. If you think $5k is expensive for you alone, wait till you get facility rates and your dad is $5k a year.

No...pay up or don't get the 3rd car.

I think you all took what I am trying to do the wrong way.
My dad is buying the car, it is without a doubt his vehicle. The car is in his name. I was wondering if the insurance policy can be too to save money.
I am still paying for my coverage just not as a primary driver, I will not be driving it everyday anyway. My younger sister will be using it too. I don't see whats illegal about this and it is in no way fraud.

Does anyone have experience in this? Someone here must. I live in Ontario and around here insurance is insane.

Doesn't matter who owns the vehicle. If you live in the same house, then you can't have more cars than primary drivers.

Okay that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

On the insurance policy, my dads name is not on it. His businesses is. Does that make any difference?

You are under obligation to advise the insurance company of all lic'd drivers in the household and the number of cars there are as well. All an insurance company has to do is take your dad's & moms drivers lic numbers and run what is called an "AUTO PLUS" report. This will show ALL vehicles that are insured for each person. If a new application is filled out, you will also have to disclose how many vehicles & lic'd operators are in the household. Basically, there is no way out of your situation. The highest rated driver will be rated on the 3rd vehicle.

Be upfront and honest otherwise it could turn around one day and bite you in the "ass"....
