A Merritt man has been forced to forfeit his 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck to the Crown after pleading guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle in an alleged street race that claimed the lives of his two friends in another vehicle, the RCMP said yesterday.
The incident occurred when friends in two separate vehicles were driving to a cabin in Merritt in what police say was a street race on June 26, 2006. Two men in a 1982 Subaru lost control on an S-curve and crashed, killing them both.
Jonathan Randall Stubbs, 26, of Merritt pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and was given an 18-month conditional sentence, 18 months of probation and an 18-month driving prohibition.
Anyone in a street race "can be held indirectly responsible for the consequences of the driving behaviour of other vehicles involved in the race," said Insp. Mike Arnold of the RCMP's Integrated Proceeds of Crime Unit.

You're title, as usual, is misleading. The street racer in this story didn't kill anybody, notwithstanding that the RCMP accurately states that he is legally responsible for the actions of the two guys that were racing with him.

well it's not like the people killed were innocent motorists...they were in the street race.

Wow, I think the bigger crime here is the misleading title.

I guess the title 'Truck forfeited' wasn't as catchy.
Besides, "Anyone in a street race "can be held indirectly responsible for the consequences of the driving behaviour of other vehicles involved in the race," said Insp. Mike Arnold of the RCMP's Integrated Proceeds of Crime Unit."
So, the title is not misleading.

The title is still misleading because the 'BC street racer' who is the subject of this story, didn't kill anyone.
He is 'deemed' responsible, but he didn't kill anyone.

Yes, apparently I do.
BC street racer indirectly killed two people and got his truck confiscated. Better?
As far as I'm concerned, the those two people killed themselves. A BC street racer indirectly killing two people is if those two were NOT involved in the race and swerved to avoid the racers.
The RCMP description is ********.

lol ibtl your own thread..
street racing isnt dependent on external factors.. if someone wants to speed or race on a highway its their decision since they are in control of their own vehicle, regardless of who's next to you..

You beat me to it, I was thinking the same thing.
Not surprising this happened in Merrit. That place is such a hole and it full of rednecks.
There was a guy who died there because he decided to put extra wide tires on his souped up shitbox so that he wouldn't peel out when he hit the gas...it worked, but the car flipped over backwards because all of the wheel forces was used.
It was quite a traumedy to me.

+1 change the title, the other two is not innocent. They were involved in the race as well.

so you're held responsible if another vehicle in your race dies? I don't know if I agree with that. sure, both people are idiots, but, it's not like he forced the person into the race, or did anything to cause the accident. they should sign waivers before they race which absolves one another in case of accidental death.

I don't agree with the concept of deeming one person a criminal because of the actions of another either. It perpetuates the lack of responsibility people are fond of accepting for their own behavior.
