Yeah, I think I'm more afraid of whatever it is that's causing me to die and the subsequent pain I will receive.
Dying is easy, but living is hard.

I've had so many near death experience I'm almost anticipating to die earlier than normal. Can't be worrying about that though as life is too short!

Gangster "lyfe" must be tough, no?
As long as I can live my dream, I do not fear death. The only thing I really fear is not being able to do what I feel I was meant to do.

I believe most if not all of us in some way or form,
have a fear for the unknown.
And your question ponders an unknown of the ultimate and perhaps final kind...
Is there life after death?
Is there a Heaven for "good" people?
Is there an eternal place of punishment and torment for "bad" people?
Sinners?
Will one ever see her/his loved ones again in the next life?
Does a next life even exist???
So I think that ^ is where our "fear of dying" comes from.
Through personal observations..
...
I gotta say that those who have experienced life altering events (i.e those who have came very close to crossing that fence) develop a deeper appreciation for life.. + a profound respect and understanding about death.
And that understanding I think has a significant element of fear mixed in there somewhere

I fear death. Sometimes when you're in bed imagine that one day your body will either be under 6ft of dirt or cremated.
It makes you appreciate life even more.

I would say yes if I was:
a) a soldier fighting in a war (being shot at and the possibility of being brutally tortured would be frightening)
b) in a helpless situation facing death (ie. stranded in the middle of the ocean where sharks are abundant, kinda like in the movie Open Water :D)
etc. etc.

I'm not afraid to die. but there are many times when I contemplate how it would be to not exist anymore. We're alive right now, at this moment, but it's inevitable that we will die one day. I've already gone through a 1/4 of my life. I only have 3/4 left, and I start to wonder what the point is. why are we even given this chance to be alive, to love, and hate, to laugh and cry, just so that one day we won't be able to anymore. It's like you're given the gift of life, but it's only borrowed. you can't keep it. you have to give it up.

Uh...if someone is fearless, then go skydiving. If you want to commit suicide, then go skydiving w/o a parachute.
As another poster said, if you do the things you want to do everyday - no regrets, then why should one fear death?

I think for b, instead of being fed to sharks you should be more worried about freezing to death / drowning... both are a lot more "painful" (because it drags out so long) than being finished off by a shark (hopefully within 1 or two bites)

What if the afterlife actually required you lead a bad life, to get the good life?
Ontopic: No because when you're dead, you are either:
1. Non-existent
2. Other hypothetical scenario.
Number one being the most likely. It's not like see animals scared about dying...

:( Not existing to take care of loved ones is definately huge... Sometimes before you drift to sleep, the mind wanders as it tries to settle down... I almost have full-blown panic attacks about that, and the deep pain i'd feel if I loose my parents.

I'm not afraid to be dead - it's the dying part that bothers me if that makes any sense. I'm not a fan of flying, or rather the potential to crash and I have a 22 hours/10 000 mile flight back home coming up in a few months so I'll have death on my mind.
I also wouldn't want to choke, it seems like a crappy way to go - I actually had a choking incident (that sounds perverse) late last year - my wife actually saved me - it was pretty scary. To be conscious but not able to breath, messed with me for a bit.
I think what bugs me most is missing out on the future - I hope that in death I can still keeps tabs on what's going on.

While I may be afraid of the possibly painful process of dying, I'm not that bothered by the thought of being dead.
To put things in perspective, the universe has existed for 13.7 billion years. I was "dead" before I was born and had never suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.
The idea of non-existence may be inconceivable to many of us. Well, it happened anyway. Gonna happen again. Our lack of imagination won't stop nature from working.
Have to find ways to live the most out of this life... get the "best deal" out of it, the RFD way!

I'm don't believe in an afterlife so I just think it sucks that in the infinite life of the universe, these are my only years ever. After this I won't be able to see, hear, feel, or think ever ever again for the rest of eternity. Bums me out.. just a bit!

why waste ur time worrying? if it happens then it happens(u could die right now or some nuclear explosion could destroy the world, but the probability is pretty small).
when u die, u just start a new cycle of energy transfer decomposing flesh into methane and other stuff.

I had my first thought of death when I was a kid. I was kinda staring into space when I suddenly thought about what would happen when I died. Being an atheist, I don't believe in an afterlife or anything. My belief is when you die, you lose consciousness and become nothingness. It's like the time between when you sleep and wake up sans dreaming. That feeling of no consciousness really freaked me out and has kept me up many nights. I'm in my 20s now and to this day, I still have those thoughts once in a while and it still freaks me out.
I think being an atheist and not believing in an afterlife contributes to it. I know that if I believe in God and that I will go on to something else when I die, it will certainly make me feel better. But my mind is too scientifically structured to be able to have a leap of faith and believe in God. Though I sometimes do wish I could believe in it just to ease my fear.
Reading some of the replies here makes me realize I have it worse than others since it seems like it bothers most people just slightly. Any tips on how to cope with death? Please don't say "it's going to happen anyways, just deal with it and accept it". I want to know how I can accept death.

The concept of being dead doesn't really scare me, but the process of dying does. I'd like mine to be quick and painless, preferably in my sleep. Although I'm more scared about losing people I care about than me dying. I remember when I was a kid, I've thought to myself a few times that I'd prefer to die young while everyone I cared about are still alive than me to grow old and watch people I love pass on one by one.

I actually don't plan on dying, I am putting my bets on the fact that medical technology will advance in my lifetime to give me an extension, even 10-20 years extra, which would further give more time for further advancement of said technology and even more life.
So yeah... sorry guys!

I find myself getting freaked out every now and then by the thought of not existing one day.
But you have already 'not existed' at one point already. If we are afraid of not existing, then were we afraid of the state we were in before we were born, and in a state of non-existance? Did we then fear a state of existance?
IF I die, I want it to happen during the apocalypse. Zombies and Jesus coming back to judge us. That would be the way to go.

I agree. I am not afraid of dying, not at all, but I want it to be quick & painless when it does finally happen. I am more scared of ending up having live out the rest of my life as vegetable or in a useless state then just dying. I'd also be more afraid of the pain associated with it than the actual death itself.
