I bought a new house. It has a decently big stairwell and a king size mattress should go up the stairs and into the master bedroom with ease.
However, the guy at Sears where I bought the mattress said that the delivery guys don't move king size mattresses up stairs because they'll always claim it won't fit and thus you can either return it or move it up on your own. I argued that they can't expect people to do the hardest part of the delivery on their own just to get a king size mattress and he says he can call in his "expert" movers who have a special contraption for bending the mattress making it easier to move up stairs.
My question is, have any of you ever had someone use a special contraption to move in a king size bed or is the guy at Sears just telling me stories to get the sale?

We bought a king mattress from the Bay and the delivery guys moved it upstairs. It wasn't easy but neither the Bay or the delivery guys raised any issues. No bending contraption was used.

Sears moved ours upstairs with no problem. Make sure you order one with 2 piece box spring. If they don't want to take it upstairs tell them to take it back. They hate having to take things back.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Yeah we got the two piece box and everything.
The salesman says that the moving guys are fairly lazy and will do anything they can to avoid carrying them up the stairs so he suggested the mattress bender movers. My guess is that he's expecting them to not move the bed upstairs, leave it sitting in my living room for a week while I'm waiting on the mattress benders, and then I'll just get fed up and move it upstairs on my own.
I have no problem moving it upstairs on my own if I had too but if they require you to pay for delivery and setup then I want delivery and setup.

there is no matress bender. Bending the mattress to much would void the warranty, although the mattress has some give to it and can be moved up the stairs. Call in the store manager and corner the salesman like he is to you! The video tape the delivery if need be!

That story is ridiculous... we have a king size mattress and normal sized stairs and doors and there was nothing special that had to be done to set things up in the bedroom upstairs. If they're planning on just leaving it on the main floor, I would refuse to pay delivery. It's generally accepted that the delivery person at least brings the item to the correct room when you have a service.

I've never seen a "mattress bender" contraption. When I moved, the mover simply pulled out 3 long straps, folded the mattress in half, and wrapped the mattress with straps while the other mover sat on it. Then, they managed to squeeze the mattress up 3 floors.
After the move, the mattress did have a "bend" in it. I believe the metal rods inside were bent beyond yield and won't return to original shape. However, I didn't notice any difference while sleeping in it.

I bought a mattress at Sears Whole Home last weekend and they gave me free delivery without me even having to request it - I saw on their ordering system a code for free mattress delivery that they can enter when a purchase is made.
(Mind you, it was only a queen sized mattress, but I don't think this delivery deal was size-specific).
I would ask for free delivery, to your upper level, sans "mattress bender" or you'll shop elsewhere. I normally find the salespeople at Sears to be really good.
