Anyone have suggestions for a cheap or AYCE mussel specials at any restaurants/bars? Preferably some place that offers a variety of ways they can cook them (different sauces).

Why not just make them yourself? At St. Lawrence Market, at Mike's Fish, you can buy them for $2.79/lb. Steam them off with some white wine, shallot, and parsley; then serve with a salad and some bread and you have a wicked lunch/light dinner.

Try the Fish House on Mondays. I think it was $7.99 all you can eat mussels. Also go there for the happy hour specials as well, 1/2 price appetizers.

Litehouse in Mississauga has an AYCE mussel event once a week. Formerly known as Lucy's, the seafood has changed a lot, for the better.
They offer 3 different sauces.
From what I remember:
-Tomato & White Wine
- Aioli (Garlic and Oil)
- Chili and White Wine
Maybe things have changed but this is what they had years ago.

+1 for the Fish House. The last time I went they had four or five different flavours - a few with tomato and a few with white wine/cream sauce. You get a pound at a time I think.

Mondays is the get rid of the old stock day. Most often (but no always) fresh fish delivery is Fridays and then not again till Tuesday. I would normally not eat fish in a restaurant on Mondays unless I was on either coast where it comes in every day.

Again, just do them yourself: that way you'll know they're fresh. And you can vary them endlessly: try sweating off some onions and red peppers, adding a splash of pernod and steaming them.
And if you want to serve them with aioli, try making your own. It will be better than any aioli that'll be served in average restaurants.

Same principal as restaurants. You cannot be assured of freshness unless you know the delivery dates.

I never was a fan of Mikes. They sold me the only bad piece of fish I've ever purchased and wouldn't give me a refund or exchange. Went by there several weeks ago and they weren't even displaying the fish on ice anymore just on refrigerated metal.

I agree... after several recs for mike's i went and got some swordfish only to have it be off slightly when i took it home. I should have sniffed it at the counter but going in mike's had a really good rep so i didn't bother.
Now i check ALL my fish and meat regardless of supplier rep... lesson learned.
Back on topic... mussels are cheap to buy and prepare at home but i must say i do like eating them outside the home too. I'm a big time sucker for moules frites and making good frites at home is a chore :P Beerbistro does decent mussels and so does le select bistro. Browne's bistro did a good curry one but i haven't been there in a long while now.

+1 for learning how to make your own. Dirt cheap, tasty, multiple recipes. You can get decent quality mussels from your local Sobeys believe it or not.
Good mussels at Smokeless Joes (Peter St. in Toronto), a variety of sauces, awesome beer. AYCE mussels at Louisiana Seafood on Monday nights (SE corner of Steeles & Hwy 10/Hurontario in Brampton). Red or white sauce only.

Costco mussels are back. $7.99 for 5lbs of PEI mussels. Check your local location for the Seafood roadshow.

I've brought two bags from Costco before and most of them were dead as the shells never opened cooked.

Anybody know if they still have this on Mondays? And for the Woodbine location? (beside Taste of Japan)

Xam Yu on Spadina and Baldwin has fresh mussells with black bean sauce for $3 a portion. They are very good and not the green shell frozen kind. There is an article stating that Susur Lee goes here all the time and is known for fresh seafood. They close early(10 or 11) compared to the other Chinatown restaraunts supposedly because they do enough business.

+1 for Sobey's mussels. For $5 you can get a 2lb bag of mussels (which is a lot). They are better than the weigh-by-the-pound ones, or the 2lb bags from other grocery stores.
