View Full Version : How Should I Go About Fixing My 360?

So recently (well like last month), my 360 died on me. But the problem is that it doesn't have the RROD, instead it just doesn't have video... just scrolling purple pixels on the screen. I can hear the booting up sound and the menu sounds, but it just doesn't have an image. It first started when I was playing Geometry Wars and the screen suddenly gave a green hue to everything, so I turned it off and back on; BAM no more picture. I was just wondering what I can do.
I tried to leave it on for a period of time for it to RROD, but that has not happened. I believe I'm still under RROD warranty since I bought the system Dec 06 and the manufacture date is Nov 06. The system has not been tampered with in any way.
I think these are my options:
1) I was thinking of trying to just opened up the box and repairing it myself (I suspect that the video card is just loose and from what I read, I can do the X-clamp trick).
2) Try to RROD it somehow (any suggestions?)
3) Send it to MSFT saying that it has RROD (do they actually check the system if it actually has the RROD?)
4) Pay someone to fix it (would be the last resort in my book)
What should I do?

I suggest up put towels over it and put it near a heater and use a blow dryer and set it to HEAT. until the **** go RROD on you. =P

I have similar problem with the OP except mine would freeze up and I would get weird checkered green/white/purple screen. It RROD on me 2 times but it always go away once the system cools down. I'm afraid I'll cause a fire or something doing the towel trick :P
also I was debating whether to send it to MS for repair cuz it does not RROD all the time, they may send it back unrepaired and charge me for shipping

When it does RROD on you take a picture or video and if they said it didn't RROD when they got it in then you can show the pictures and video as proof. =P

Tell them it's RROD, I don't think they'd even check

Ya, I doubt they check every system... I'm thinking of using their online repair system and saying (in the comments) that my system has been experiencing the RROD, but it comes in and out (hate to lie, but I think its my best option). I'll also explain that my system "sometimes doesn't RROD", but boots up normally and I get the scrolling pixels with sound.
I'll see if this works. No harm in trying (I guess).

Phone the 1-800 number. Tell them it's RRoD. They'll send you a shipping label. Use your own box or just go to the UPS store and ask them to package it ($5). Then you're done.

The thing is, I'm afraid they will charge you shipping and whatever labour fees just to receive and send you your 360 back. I check their website, and it says "However, if we find your console is not showing three red lights, and you submitted it for free repair, we may choose to contact you for payment, or return the console to you unrepaired."
keywords are "we may choose" so thats what is deterring me right now.

You really have nothing to lose by sending it in to get repaired. They can't legally keep your xbox if they refuse to repair it. Worst case scenario is they ask you to pay for repair, you say no its not worth it, you pay the shipping to get it back not repaired. Most likely scenario is it'll get fixed cause I believe the xbox repairs are done by a 3rd party company hired by MS, they are less likely to care if the console is really RROD, modded, broken seal, etc since they make money on each console they repair.
The downside of getting it repaired by MS is the console will most likely RROD or die again because they don't really fix the root of the problem which would require a proper reflow/reball of the GPU and improved cooling which a reputable repairer would do.
