Picked one up for a gift. Deinterlacing from shaw leaves much to be desired but, otherwise pretty pleasant set.

i have an older (last yr) model of this 37" aquos. i am pleased with it on SD but i am frustrated and confused that whenever i hook up the antenna for OTA hd, the option on the tv wouldnt let me access it.

so hook up the antenna and unfortunately this model only has one coaxial input (sucks ass)...cheaper tv like daytek has 2...anyways after connecting it i pressed...
menu (on control) > setup > antenna - setup = not able to access it.
anyone know/have an idea what i am talking about? please help.

side not: yes, hd box is $100 nowadays...i have my reasons....that part ^^^^^ annoys the hell out of me. i want to know what i am not doing right...

nice price for a 37" LCD. Sharp still one of the most acclaimed TV producers, and after teamed with Sony, expect much better tv, esp for 10th generation large screens.

I actually didnt like it at 1360x768 so I'm running it at 1024x768 and I must say it looks just fine. It doesn't look quite as good as it did on my 22" at 1680x(Whatever) but I am not super picky. The further I sit back the better it looks so I'll probably get a wireless set for that purpose. I bought it more to play Xbox 360 on, but if I can use it as a computer monitor and sell my old 22" for some extra cash I'm all over it.

Hmm, are they not then begging people to rent this tv until that time, when they will return it and repurchase the TV at a lower cost (adding a couple months to the warranty to boot)?

Point is moot if deal is dead, but could apply to other deals, yes no?

Or am I misunderstanding the whole thing?

In other words, you ignore what everyone else thinks and buys stuff at random? Gee, that sounds real intelligent.

PS. I looked this TV once at Futureshop. It was easily the poorest TV in the store.

Looks fine to me, and did you even check to see if it was hooked up to HD because many stores don't hook up most TVs 37" and below to an HD source making them all look like crap.

how do u get OTA?

caprio
Nov 6th, 2008, 11:54 PM
You can get over the air (OTA) HDTV channels for free by buying:

1. HDTV antenna eg.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2430411&CatId=2767

2. RG6 coaxial cable

3. mount for antenna

4. grounding wire and grounding mast

Set up antenna as high as possible, perhaps on your roof and run the cable into your house.

Your tv should have a built in tuner so it will recognize the HD channels and decode it for you. Point the antenna towards Buffalo and you will still get the CN Tower signals. I forgot you are in BC, in that case you will have to look up where the HD signals are broadcasted in your area and point the antenna to the best direction.

OTA HD is better quality than Rogers HD because there is less compression. However, it all depends on the source material and how good it is.

You might be lucky and get none but when you see it, it's like trying not to look at someone's hairy mole
(I should have never pointed it out on my friend's TV-he hates me, lol)
Please look for it on day 1 when you get it home.

My receipt says right on it that the warranty is valid until Jan. 5, 2009 or 30 days from purchase. So I'm assuming it's whatever is the longer of the two since it is an extended warranty. And if you were talking specifically on price drop matching that is only 14 days I believe.

The medium is clearly the message. People will spend hundreds on a high quality tv to run crap on it.

This is clearly whay many people are still doing.

I was also at fault for doing the same thing with my 'crappy' Viewsonic 27" LCD TV for >1 year watching digital SD cable. I ditched Rogers cable and went OTA.
The TV is only 1280x720 but it serves great in the kitchen as PC monitor for casual surfing, watching OTA-HD with a $50 computer ATSC tuner card and BD/HDDVD streaming. HDTVs are great if you feed the right source.

I use an outdoor CM4221 antenna mounted fairly low, I can get 16 DTV channels and I am NOT counting the duplicate like FOX (29-2).

13 of them are HD.

It was pretty "fuzzy." At 1024x768 it is much crisper. If I am doing something wrong please let me know though :D. I currently have it hooked up DVI from computer to VGA on TV. I have been asking around if DVI to HDMI would be better but I have gotten mixed responses. Running DivX files of different shows and movies looks better on full screen than most CRTs I have seen so I don't know what the deal is with this "buy quality and play crap on it."
The Xbox 360 looks amazing on it though :cheesygri and I don't consider this to be a crappy source.

That a bit of a shame if the Sharp can't display best at the native resolution.
Heck, I did the opposite of what you do - displaying 1360x768 on my bedroom 42" plasma (native 1024x768) so I can maintain correct 16:9 aspect ratio.

You should try DVI<->HDMI cable/adapter. Try 1365 or 1366x768 also. If underscanning or overscanning are issues, there may be adjustments that can be made in the video card software or adjustment on the TV itself.

Any LCD that can't display nice and sharp in their respective native resolutions is not acceptable to me.

As a sidenote, I was trying to point out that 1920x1080 is not needed unless you are within 1-2ft. I'm pretty sure 1360x768 has pretty small texts as it is.

I find this very surprising - how is it even possible that the native resolution looks worse? There is a one-to-one mapping for the pixels. Otherwise you have a non-linear mapping (stretching/compressing information in some pixels), inevitably leading to distortion.

Actually, I had first hand experience in this kind of crap.
'Bought' a Daytek 42" from Costco a while back for $999, it couldn't display it's native 1360x768 clear and crisp at all...half a dozen unfixable dead/stuck pixels, etc. It went back after 48hrs.

Maybe it is just the fonts that looked horrible because I ran that resolution on my 22" LG computer monitor and it looked exactly like it does on my TV. Maybe my GFX card doesn't like that resolution??

On my 32" Sharp LCD, it started up PC mode at 1024x768 when I first got it. When I changed to the native resolution it looked like crap the first time. I had to go into the menu and change a setting (I forget what, possibly from stretch to one-to-one pixel mapping) for it to look good.
