View Full Version : [Merged] Apple Black Friday - for Canada
spotts01
Nov 21st, 2008, 11:36 PM
I got this email from Apple Canada. We have an employee purchase program with apple that usually gets 6% off of AppleCda prices.
Point being, it looks like Apple will have a Black Friday sale for Canadians as well.
Here's what I got:
Lots of gifts. 1 day not to miss.
Mark your calendar for November 28th to visit your EPP online store and get ready to save!
Once again, Apple is having a one-day only sale the day after Thanksgiving--Black Friday! It's the single most popular shopping day of the year and several Apple and third-party products will be specially priced for one day only. As EPP partners, you will qualify for the sale prices in addition to the EPP discount. That's a double saving!
Visit your EPP online store Friday, November 28th to see what products will be on sale. Remember you can also pass your savings to your friends and family.
Attached are the PDFs to help you communicate the news!
EPP online store: http://www.apple.ca/cepp/?????
Note: I have removed our company name from url.
Happy Holidays,

especially if you removed the actual link?

I'm not really seeing a deal here, unless you're part of the EPP program. Extremely misleading title.

There's a ton of blue-chip Canadian companies that are a part of an Apple EPP. i.e. Accenture, Royal Bank, Telus, etc...

To clarify, this is an upcoming sale for any company which participates in Apple's EPP program. No details are given in the PDF (which the op removed the link to) - all it says is that there's a sale coming next Friday. It does not list the amount of discounts to expect, but realistically I don't think it will be anything crazy like iPods at 50% off :P

It probably won't be too hot considering the Apple Store prices are 10% more than FS/BB (iPod Touch)
EDIT: yeah, $309 for the 16GB Touch, FS/BB is $299...

Apple has a BLACK FRIDAY sale on their Canadian site every year...and it has always been avail to the general public.
They never post on the public site until the day of...

Futureshop has a sale this weekend, with $100 off all Apple computers. This will probably be a better deal than anything Apple does.

The rumors are that the discounts they will be offering this black friday are bigger than normal... because of the economic situation in the states right now. We'll see next week whether it's true or not.

With Black Friday sale information from rival PC vendors beginning to leak online, experts at Barclays Capital say they expect Apple to counter the promotions with a more aggressive than usual one-day sale, offering deep discounts on a number of Mac models.

Seems that the EPP is a bit cheaper than the educator plan
EG:
Macbook 2.0 $1399.00
EPP $1315.00
Educator $1349.00
I wonder how long Apple is going to hold Canadian prices at this level with the current exchange rate..

Yeah I just checked for the 8GB Nano and it's only $10.00 cheaper for the EPP than the regular price! LOL

All I was trying to say was that Apple is having a sale this Friday for everyone. The EPP part is just stating that EPP members will get an additional discount. For instance, EPP usually do not get any discounts on refurbs so this is different.
The PDF was an email attachment, not a link, and basically said there was a sale this Friday starting at 12.01am
Quoted again for clarity:

A few years ago, I purchased an iMac from Futureshop that was discounted for Black Friday...slightly cheaper than Apple.ca's pricing. If I recall correctly, I had to ask about it because the discount wasn't displayed. There's no reason why FS wouldn't do the same this year.

Well... it would be if you want to wait till next summer to buy a computer. :D

The point of this thread is that the EPP discount combines with the Black Friday. The EDU discount doesnt (at least in the past it hasn't). So the Black Friday sales on the EPP sites will be on TOP of the EPP discounts. AFAIK, the Black Friday discounts aren't on top of the EDU discounts.

if it's a discount of the price of an ipod touch plus 100 dollars, i might just get one. because the back to school sales are -100 and a free ipod touch! so -360, apple's made a sale. :D

I like how the Apple's marketing works...great!
By keeping the prices at the same level everyday...convincing us that we are part of a sort of "elitist" community when we buy one of their product, they are able to convince us that a 6% price down is a damn good deal.
But hey! we are going to buy at regular price anyway to have the honor to be part of the elite so why not a 6% rebate?! Isn't it better than nothing?
During this time, we are bashing Microsoft for their marketing scheme...and we are crying like babies when a 24" monitor doesn't show up with at least 40% price down at Dell's DoD...
Brilliant Steve!

If you don't know someone, I don't think they're going to care too much if you order under some random company. I've never once been asked for an employee number or anything.

I wonder how long Apple is going to hold Canadian prices at this level with the current exchange rate..
not to sound hostile but who ever gave a EFF about Canadians?
they don't care that our dollar is in the crapper.
our stuff will be over priced FOREVER... i think it's because the sales they make in Canada are a fraction compared to every other nation!
the fact that the population of Canada can fit into California doesn't help either...

Apple is selling the entry-level MacBook for US $1299. As per XE.COM - this equals CAN $1646.26. Canadians are only paying CAN $1399 for this laptop right now. As such - Canadians consumers are actually paying less than US wholesale cost on these laptops...
This should stimulate some cross-border shopping! Say hello to those customers with American accents that you bump into in the Canadian Apple stores and thank them for bringing their dollars up here!

Apple wants to be the Mercedes of the computer world.
They don't budge much on price even though they have high margins
This keeps their marketshare lower than it could be
Apple Gross Margin = about 35%
which is quite nice for the computer world
That means that for a $1,400 laptop
$490 goes to gross margin
Net Income as % of sales = 14.8% = WOW

Apple at some point has to appease its shareholders. But I think its pretty sad when 50$ off a computer that comes to 1500$ out the door is considered hot.
The macbook is 30% alunimum, 30% profit, and 40% actual computer, in terms of cost.
I so desperately want to buy one, but when you are paying upwards of 1863$ after tax, and have no Blu ray, HDMI out, Firewire...Apple really dropped the ball on this one.
I admit my current HP is fragile as crap, but the fact is it performs 10x better as a Home Theater computer then Apple's glorified aluminum typewriter.
Just bitter that the aluminum adds 1000$ to the cost of the computer. I think I shall wait until June when I get a free Ipod, and the specs are increased.

Apple's Black Friday sales have appeared on their Australian site, giving us a little insight into the 'deals' we in the US can possibly expect tomorrow. It looks like the biggest cut will be on the new MacBooks and iMacs -- up to $100 off, with some smaller discounts on iPods and the Apple TV. Everything else falls pretty much in line with what we've seen in previous years. It's nothing terribly exciting or unexpected for sure, so if you were thinking about busting down the doors in search of a $7 iPhone tomorrow morning, you might want to cuddle in for a few extra winks instead

As far as I understand, it's the reverse... the discounts come off the EPP Price. like the Baseline MBP is $1977 in the EPP Store - it'll be $100-150 off *that* price, whichever amount of discount Apple choses to put on the products (everyone else gets the $XX discount off of the retail price).

EPP pricing for the new Alubook 2.4 $1649, 2.0 $1315.
If those prices are discounted further $100 or so then you're saving roughly 200 off the new macbooks.

You should be able to load it with 2GB (2x1gb SODIMMs) - or 3GB unofficially - if it's a Core2Duo model.
There is Mac-Specific memory out there - but just get something that's got a lifetime warranty and you'll be set. The 1GB SODIMMS have gone on sale as low as $9.99 each (after MIR at NCIX) recently...

Ok so with my EPP I would save 12.00 over the Costco price I paid but get free engraving. Not related to sale pricing, and not sure about these days, but educational pricing used to regularly qualify you for a slight discount on refurbs, and for AppleCare for refurbs as well.

So for the last 10 years Apple has been priced higher than the PC Competition. What exactly do you argue means they have to price down to match the Acers and eMachines of the world now? The economy downturn will not be permanent, and Apple looks on par for the course this financial quarter. They're doing better than Dell. So they should abandon their working fiscal plan to match Dell's failing plan in this economy so that you'll buy a new MacBook? I seriously doubt it.

It says in their terms of sale that if they find out that you arent' employed in that company, that you authorize them to charge you the difference for the non-discounted price.
That being said, they don't really check I don't think (it would be too difficult to check everyone!) and the EPP discount is supposedly to be allowed to used by family and friends, so I'm sure you know someone that works at one of those companies ;).

I tried the same order, with the exception I wanted the 2.4Ghz Macbook. The price also adds wrong, but they would not subtract the $101 from the incorrect total. They "charged" me the incorrect total, and told me to call back tomorrow and talk to customer service to get a price adjustment. I don't really want the correct price, I want the incorrect price - $101. This would save an additional $70 over the EPP plan price. I can always cancel my order, depending on what they offer me. I tried calling twice, and neither rep would just subtract the $101 from the incorrect price for me.
