Canadian Tire has the price of Tide Ultra (37 uses) - SKU 53-1765-8 marked as $8.67 however it is scanning at $9.69. Ask for SCOP and get it for free. Some cashiers will have no idea of SCOP so a manager authorization might be required. I just grabbed one from the Sherwood Park Canadian Tire in AB. It is YMMV. I noticed that another Canadian Tire had the price marked incorrectly as well.

Some cashiers will insist on price correction but you are actually entitled to get this item for free. So use use your judgment, be nice and ask the cashier to follow SCOP. Remember if you act like a jerk, you will lose your opportunity to get a free deal.

I had to buy a box of roofing nails and it was listed lower on the shelf, that box also scanned at a higher price so I got that free as well using SCOP.

For people who do not know SCOP - Scanning Code Of Practice. There should be sticker posted on all tills explaining what it is.

Re: SCOP - Is it better to let an item ring through for the wrong price, pay it, and THEN ask for the SCOP?? [If I catch it as it goes through the till, they always insist on correcting it right then and there.] I think it may be better to allow it to ring through at the wrong, higher price, then go to customer service to request the SCOP.

What has your experience been, RFD'ers?

We usually use Kirkland or Purex from Costco because Tide costs more but Tide for free is awesome. Will check it out tomorrow while shopping there.
Thanks polypep!

People, print this (http://www.ccgd.ca/home/en/PDF/National/English%20Cashier%20Document%20September%202007.pd f) and highlight...
"If the correct price of the product is $10 or less, the retailer must give the product to the customer for FREE. If the correct price of the product is higher than $10, the retailer must give the customer a discount of $10 off the correct price."
Keep a copy with you for stores that participate in SCOP.

I have always insisted on SCOP at the till. Never had a problem. At RCSS, because I use self serve tills, I go to customer service later and get it SCOPed. Its your choice.

That happened to me once now I just let them ring it through and pay it , then take receipt to customer service desk it takes a little extra time but always works, I think they no the policy better also.

I did the SCOP routine at Food Basics. Cashews were on sale in a large display but in another aisle they were priced higher. As they were an afterthought (I was running in for milk) it was easy to catch the error on the receipt.
I questioned the cashier and pointed out the display. She told me to take it up with customer service. When I explained the price difference they started to refund me the money and I started to say "Don't I get this for..." they finished the sentence. So they are very aware of the SCOP policy.
mmmm free cashews:cheesygri

SCOP is voluntary. I know Canadian Tire offers it but Zellers doesn't for example.
I noticed a small sticker on the Canadian Tire window referring to SCOP.

I always insist on SCOP at the till and it's always been fine. RCSS is the best though. Sometimes when I mention an error in pricing, I forget about SCOP but they'll do it without even being asked to.

Tide for free is great deal. Thx OP!

As mentioned in my original post YMMV.

If it is offered at all stores for lower price and there are lots of SCOPs claimed, rest assured it will be fixed swiftly.

At RCSS last week on a book (Wikinomics) the scanner price was higher than the sticker price so she just wanted to charge the sticker price. I mentioned the SCOP and said that it should be half price (my mistake), so she charged me half price. I found out later that I should have gotten $10. off. This was with the manager.

They will only give you what you ask for, and only if you ask for it. You need to be proactive. They won't offer it to you unless you ask. They will just charge the sticker price.

SCOP is "if item scans at a higher price than marked, it is free up to the value of $10.00."

Wait a sec... Sticker price? Shouldn't there be a bit at the front of the little SCOP thing on tills that say that it's not valid for price tagged items? (I know that's what I was shown when I asked at Shopper's for a bag of Halloween candy tagged at $0.99 but scanning at $6.49 a week or so ago.)

At walmart this happened with kids shoes. I explained to the cashier the SCOP as the line formed behind me. They did a price check, said it was cheaper than scanned and proceeded to charge me the lower price as listed in store. Since the line was so long and she had no clue, I took it to CS and got my refund.
Probably better just to go to CS and ask them about the SCOP and then show your receipt.

depends on how experienced the cashier is...
i usually ask for SCOP at the till, but if the cashier doesn't know what's going on, i just pay and go to CS

Just to clear up a little confusion about SCOP.

SCOP is mandatory in QC but voluntary in ON. Not sure about the other provinces.

SCOP does not apply to anything with a physical price tag on it.

If a product has different flavours or scents (different SKU) but still the same product ie: Chapmans Ice Cream Vanilla or Chapmans Ice Cream Chocolate and all flavours scan wrong, you get one of each.

I could be wrong but from the website, this is my impression.

watch out for shoppers! I had a friend that used to work there, and she was ORDERED to pretend not to know what SCOP is or NEVER mention it if the customer is unaware of it, and to try and correct the product to the right price and ring it thru asap to avoid SCOP issues, or freebies!.
This was at CENTRE MALL in Hamilton On. Shoppers.

Yeah, it's voluntary here in Ont. However, if a store, organization, etc.. decided to participate in SCOP they damn well better follow the rules of it, or I am making a public scene..
ofcourse if I am with a lady friend, I come back after and handle it.
it is more principle than $$ really...

I find most stores do this. My beef with SDM is that they claim that they must charge 1 cent as they can't ring in anything for free. I heard this directly from the manager when I complained. I told him that I didn't care about the limitations of their system but the policy says that the item is free up to $10 and as such I want them to adhere to the policy. Yes, I caused a scene over a penny.

Obviously, you are with the wrong women if you aren't comfortable to pursue SCOP when with a lady friend. If I were the lady with you, I would have made a stink about it. After all, I do it for strangers when I see cashiers not following SCOP or not applying it properly.

I always do SCOP at the cashier. SCOP is to ensure that items scan accurately so once it scans wrong, the policy can be invoked. The cashier is supposed to have the authority to ring in the product under the policy (ie free or $10 off). At many stores, there are long lines at customer service so why would you want to go stand in another line.

The only time I was told to go to customer service was in Quebec at Maxi. Not knowing the Quebec law and trying to explain this to the cashier in my broken french, I wasn't get far with my argument but she said that I had to pay the full price first and then go to CS for a refund. Didn't make sense to me but as a true RFDer I couldn't let a SCOP opportunity pass. I had to line up again at Customer Service and then the CSR wanted to check the price again even though the cashier had someone check the price and wrote it on my receipt. The CSR did write down the product info to hopefully correct the price. This is something that I have never seen anyone do here. I have gone to the same store week after week and gotten the same product free because no one bothered to correct the price.

RCSS near us are very good - point out a problem and they apply SCOP right away - Walmart - complete headache - guaranteed you will be at the long line up for customer service every time.

Never tried it at CT - will be interesting to see how it goes - I reckon the competence of the staff there is just around the level of the Wally world folks so I suspect a line at customer services will be in order.

Yesterday at CT near Shepperd/Laslie just got a package of Mini MAGlite LED flashlight which include two 3W LED flashlight and 5 AA battery.
Sticker price is $29.99, check out price is $34.99.
I pay one pack @34.99 and bring it to the Customer Return area. No problem to get $10 off from the sticker price. So I pay $19.99 + tax for it.
