Disregarding the fact that there is going to be a fairly sort lineup due to the generally low appeal of the specials and the fact that most of them have been on sale for that price or lower previously in the year..

We are going to be bomabarded everywhere in the news about how we are in a depression because the sales are down blah blah

Note to Future Shop Best Buy Conglomerate:

Just cause you put boxing day stickers over crap doesn't change the fact that it is crap to begin with and people will not want to buy it.

im going after a propane heater (for ice shanty) and crappy tire and that is about it this year, disregarding money (purchased DSLR and Snowblower plus lots of other stuff last year)

im pissed off

There is very little stuff that I havent seen gone equal or lower than the sale items.
This year's a joke.
But the worst is not what your thinking. The worst is that people are still going to line up and buy the crap and then come here and whine in early next year when the prices go down even more.

If you don't want to buy that product, why would you care if they put a boxing day sale price on it ?

I've never lined up for any boxing day sale things for electronics. Because one thing is guaranteed, a few days/weeks/months later, that very same thing will cost LOWER than the boxing day sale price.

Almost all electronics come down in price. TVs, MP3 players, cameras, etc.

i hope nobody heads over flyer unseen (which im sure will happen) boxing day is about picking up excellent deals while the retailers make a name for themselves while you are in there. Boxing day is not a a day to get spoon fed Grade D Crap

as for the electronics up until this boxing day (Rebel Xs for $449) nothing had even matched my rebel xt w/lens for $399 for boxing day but other than that your right

btw Logitec 5.1 Surround Sound System $49.99 last year all day long (no sold out's) this year $69.99 bull $hit

im going to check out boxing day 2007 flyer's and see if i would buy something if that was this years to even further extend my rant

I disagree on this point. I have no doubt the lineups at each store will be just as long or longer than last year. The general public will still eat these ads up as they are not as informed as many of us who are not impressed.

You make it sound like retailers owe you a good deal or something just because. Yeah, the sheep will still go out and buy that TV that's only $100 off instead of the $300 off you expect it to be. Why do you care? Retailers make their money off of the sheep so savvy consumers like you can PM, take advantage of price errors and generous return policies so you can save $10.

I know this is RFD, but c'mon. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to save a little money this year? If your job is in jeopardy, the last thing you should be worried about is buying that new SLR to replace the one you already have.

+1 many of the mis informed people maybe think that wat is shown in the flyer is an excellent deal. For example, an item at regular price is $80, the store might jack up the price before hand or ever claim that its worth more than its regular price, and creating the fact that there is a greater savings.

Even if Im not going to buy anything, I might still drive by the lines and laugh my a** off all those people that think they are getting uber super special awsome boxing day shizzle fried with cheese and butter deals.

j/k

But when you see a product for 100$ for a full year and then suddenly the price of the product is 300$ a week before boxing day and on boxing day they put the price back down to 100$ with a little sign that says "save 200$" people are are gonna make sure that they get it by lining up at 3am.

The TVs seem decent though. I haven't seen the 46" W4100 for less than $1499.99 before. It's usually $1699.99 isn't it? It's about $200 off. Nothing major, but better than usual. Not worth lining up over.

The reason that people are whining is that when you see something for 100$ in sales here and there during all year long and then on boxing day its 200$ with a sign that says "save 100$" its not impressive when you still pay the 100$ for the product. Let alone the tricks some stuff advertised as specials is actually at regular or very near regular prices.

The FS and BB flyer aslo shocked many. I thought it was a joke at first.Dead serious.

We're only a small handful of people that waste time browsing this board. A larger majority of people have no idea of current, past and future prices of things. Boxing Day is a Canadian institution. People will line up regardless for the thrill, fun and tradition of it regardless of the price.

I was just down in the US for Black Friday. I knew in advance all the sales were terrible but the lineups were longer than last year. They buy because they're there. Retailers now know this. Best Buy is the best at keeping prices higher than their competitor. They understand the market, prices, buying trends and demand better than anyone else. Putting out a flyer in advance to wet our mouths will have many opening their wallets on Friday.

More like every years a joke - boxing day is the most overrated holiday I stopped going out on this day many years ago...its just not worth it. I agree with you here. Most of the electronic deals are older models being cleared out for the new wave and are always on sale for most of Jan-Feb. There are a few deals to be had this year but nothing worth lining up for when, like you said, it will be had for the same or less over the next month or so.

I think that if some deals were uber awesome (to be surprised with) they would be in huge block letters on 1/4 of the front page with the words 3 per store and not a surprise on boxing day. They want to pull people into their stores not surprise the ones who already did.

First, this simply isn't true. They sell out a lot of stuff on Boxing day and it never comes back. Second, the real effects of the lower Canadian dollar will start to kick in. Third, there is a bottom point for everything. We're at it for TV's.

Yes, this is most likely true. I've heard from retailers that TV prices are going to go up about 20% in the new year because of the dollar. This is the last of the stock that was bought when the dollar was strong. Prices are generally going to go up in the new year.

Remember it took 6 months for prices to go down when the dollar was strong.

That's a crock of shite. The dollar is stabilizing and with the US economy going sour there is not point in upping the price by 20%. For what good? To drive CDNs not to buy a single thing. Prices will continue to drop and for the wheelin dealin type of folks here, you're deals will sweeten by next Fall.

Nothing in the history of electronics has gone up.

Hear, hear. These "deals" are a disgrace to the "Canadian institution" of Boxing Day. Where's are the deals like the Best Buy's sub-$100 Harmony 888 of two years ago (when the regular price was $250 and (rare) sales $50 at most)? Or the same year's deal of still super-rare PS3 released on Christmas Day afternoon by FS (they had 1000)? That was Boxing Day. This is nothing. Xbox deal IS decent but smart people would wait till Pros are Jaspers - which will happen only after this clearance.

Amazon at least has stepped up this year and kicked the crap out of BB/FS. I bought 3 things from them this month and should've bought more.

Canadian government should trademark "Door Crasher" on behalf on Canadians and enforce the usage of the term so that only REAL doorcrashers can be advertised as such.

I agree about Amazon. They stepped up with various deals here and there. I did well with Xbox 360 accessories like controllers, Live subs, Live points, Wireless adapter and more. All of thise items were $15-$20 less than the B&M stores and free shipping to boot!

I did 3 boxing days at Future Shop and it was always discontinued/no name **** that were the hot sellers.

I don't know about Best Buy as they're not commsion, but the best time to buy on Boxing Day at Future Shop is the end of the day. In the morning, the sales guys are just order takers on the junk. By the end of the day they're trying to pad their sales, cross the $1000 commion mark etc and they also have the time to have a conversation. They will negotiate on things much more as they have leeway from their managers.

Just reporting on what I've heard from multiple sources. The existing stuff won't go in price, but the new models ie the "2009 edition" will be 20% more than what's available right now and will be slower to drop in price/go on sale. So in the next 3-4 months, there might not be better deals than there are now.

Prices will drop eventually of course.

Take it with a grain of salt I suppose.

And this is exactly why the major retailers will be a ghost town compared to boxing week of previous years.

People are going to stay away in droves. Don't get me wrong, there will still be a lineup (albeit way shorter), there will still be people rushing for a rare doorcrasher (like a v1 ipod touch or pioneer kuro), and there will always be impulse buys (the only reason they wasted ad space on an overpriced Rocketfish HDMI cable and ipod touch knockoff), but the larger mass of boxing day bargain hunters won't even bother to go out, or will dramatically REDUCE the shopping cart total this year.

And if new prices are going to increase by 20% in the new year, you can bet your ass people will be saving their pennies rather than spending them. And you can bet the moment the canadian dollar approaches 90+ cents vs the us dollar that there will be a mass shopping exodius to the US. Personally, I have my fingers crossed for a par dollar in 18 months...

Man every year when the boxing day flyers come out it just makes me miss the old deals. 5 years or so back and beyond they used to have amazing deals. When it actually payed to line up, you could save a thousand dollars easy with just a few of a certain item. Now there isn't even a single item lining up for, so you save 50$ on the odd item, they don't even make it worth your time to stand out in the cold.

I haven't seen a single thing i'll be going out to buy, maybe pick up a few off the 9.99 blurays at a couple stores but beyond that, everything is bleh.

Though, I think there are some decent deals (some of the 360 and TV ones) but most are just crap.

I wasnt expecting too much this year for boxing day in terms of gaming after all the sales that went on this year such as the infamous Zellers 2/30 deal and TRU's Buy2 get 1 free deal.

As for laptops, my dad needed one and i was laughing my ass off when rfd posted the flyers. Alot of the laptops from FS and BB that say "HOT PRICE" are actually standard priced on their site for the last week all in stock.

One really funny thing i saw with laptops is the Sony ones. Yes BB and FS slap on a bluray drive onto a 599 laptop. Sell it for 700-1000 and ONLY OFFER VGA OUT? o.o I bet some people who buy these laptops wont even use or know what bluray is... sigh

As usual its the christmas season and on boxing day we're all expecting deals. Most of the members here on RFD know better than to get fooled by the fake ads but for the rest of the general population, they'll keep spending and buying things like those "not really for sale" laptops etc. And the wheels of the economy will continue to roll...

Well I dont really wanna move away from the discussion, its all a conspiracy to move away the population from PC games. The Xbox is like 4-5 years old technology yet some games (PORTS) look better on the Xbox than the modern day PC. Companies like EA want to be a monopoly and its their games that run the most shi**ier on PCs. The same game will look much better on the consoles, which is old tech.
Its possible to make games look better for the PC, they just dont want to.

Now coming back to some boxing day discussion, now im thinking that might be a reason why they didnt went on sale, once again to move people away from PC games.

I just find it so strange when people are buying crap at somewhat low prices (for crap) and then being all happy for purchasing crap!

They don't see the importance of quality... which comes at a cost, of course. A deal is when you get this quality at a reduced price.

That, to me, is a good deal. No matter how you price crap, it's still crap....
