The following are Boxing Day sales on SDHC memory cards from Future Shop and Best Buy. Which is the best-value for my newly purchased Canon SD1100IS?
- Sandisk 8GB Ultra II SDHC for $20.
- Dana-Elec 8GB SDHC for $10
- Lexar 8GB Platinum II SDHC for $18.
- Kingston 8GB SDHC for $10.
Thanks!

I was considering these as well but I couldn't get over this whole Classic & Speed thing. So I'm not sure which to recommend here.
I got Best Buy to PM SIG Electronics on the Panasonic 4GB Classic 20MB/s. I went with this because I read (Google) the Performance is similar to Lexar's Professional & SanDisk Extreme III (both Class 6/20MB).
I compared it to the recent Kingston Classic 6 from Canada Computers and there is a difference! I'm also using it on my new Canon SD1100IS. :cheesygri

Please elaborate.
The camera cannot write fast enough to make use of the class 6 speed. Only a card reader will use it.

yes, but if you have a 720p movie mode camera such as the TZ5, the faster write speed will be better as you won't have to wait for the card to buffer for enough memory. Or, if you are doing continous burst shooting, a higher Class rating will be better.
I think the SD association's Class rating is only meant for the write speed, not the dumping speed. Correct me if I am wrong here.
INdividual manufacturers claim of 20mbps or more are the card's maximum burst speed based on it's own testing, not according to the SD association, so there may not be any standardization on that.
The Class rating is only the MINIMUM rated speed of the card, whereas individuals like putting on the MAXIMUM speed.

In this case, the OP is asking about using it for SD1100IS, not TZ5.

Indeed, but were talking about the SD1100IS.
SD Classes are classified by the min write speed.

Then it is settled -- nothing but the cheapest SDHC available for my SD1100IS!

The Class 6 is $8 more, its up to you. In the future SD card will still likely be around, and cameras will become faster; $8 isent a whole lot to somewhat future proof. However at the same time, SD card capsicum is always increasing. I, personally just buy the cheap brand name.

I have learned not to pay "just a little bit more" for something that I "might/may/will" use in the future.
As it stands right now, that $8 more is an extra 80% of the $10 I'm about to spend on the Kingston 8GB SDHC.
So instead of spending the extra $8 to get a Class 6 card now, I'll hold onto it and hopefully by the time I'll actually need the Class 6 speed, that $8 will get me a 16GB or 32GB SDHC Class 6 card. ;)
I'll take your advice and get the cheapest brand name SDHC for now.
Thanks (truly appreciate it).

That's a great approach to purchasing storage. I do the same with my harddrives.
