Kinda weird but I hope someone can help.

First off, I find my laptop's hard drive rather loud. Whenever it is writing/reading something, I can hear it spinning (not very loud, but its noticable).

When I plug in speakers / headphones / connect to TV to watch movies and stuff, then I can hear the hard drive spinning rather loudly (I think the speakers are amplifying the sound?) It quite annoying. It also makes a loud sqweeking noise when I scroll up/down on pages too for some reason

Would this be a sound issue, or hard drive issue? If its the hard drive, I could buy another 1. If its the sound, are there sound cards that I can plug into my laptop (i.e. the PC Card / PC Express Slot thingy) that may be better than the current integrated sound?

Thanks :)

Dunno if this will help but my one year old acer hard drive would crash continuously with a huge scratching sound beforehand, a format fixed this. On the other hand my msi wind has scratching sound but this is normal as repoted by a number of users.

My laptop had scratching noise back in march i think. Few days after that, the hard drive died( got the blue screen of death). You might want to back up your stuff right away just in case its your hard drive.

Not sure how you could get weird sounds on your headphone jack and while surfing. Could be a sound card problem.

My HD died after just over 3yrs HP ZV5325CA. How old is your laptop?

My laptop is only about a year and half old. (Bought in summer of 2007). Its a fujitsu e8210. I've noticed this sound since July 2008?

I'll create a back up, but I'm not too much worried as I am annoyed with the sound it makes :S

Some laptops suffer from noisy electric components more than others, I know many HP laptops suffer from this. I recall HP even releasing new BIOSes to try an deal with electric noise leaks (like when scrolling, CPU working, etc.)... I think it was related to the motherboard chipset and power saving features, something about when the CPU clocked down in power save mode electirc noises would be especially bad. The work around was turning off power saving features (full power), but then that kills the battery life and the fans start to make noise more often trying to keep things cool... pffft.

Just curious, have you tried to mute the microphone?
