ditto, I can't believe that an UPCONVERTING(still fairly new tech) dvd player that DOESN'T have divx is on the market place, its a big design flaw.

according to the philips website, the dvp3980/37 shouldnt play divx. (look under video playback of specs)

the dvp3982/37, which looks identical to the 80/37, does play divx.

Can an upconverting DVD player plays both standard definition DVD and high definition DVD, or it just plays standard definition DVD and upconvert it to HD output?

These phillips dvd players I've had over the years have been A-OK. Just have to take care of things.
Still, I'd still sooner buy mine from a store I could return it to if it failed, all this stuff IS made in China.

micromv - you have 652 posts - you shouldn't need to ask this question.
No - they just upconvert regular dvd's it does not play HD-DVD or HD-mpeg4

Buddy, this is a deal forum. you generally don't need tech knowledge to post here...

yeah, but with that many posts, you shouldn't be too lazy to search up for yourself what an upconverting DVD player is.
Back on topic, anyone know if this unit in fact does or can play divx (perhaps through a hack or firmware)?

Is this the older one with USB 1.0 or the newer one with USB 2.0?

Looking at the specs it doesn't look like there is a USB port on this player...
