I was recently reading up on diets for building body mass and I read that egg whites are a good source of protein and anyone looking to increase mass should eat them.

Egg white is the clear liquid part of an egg, right? So how are you supposed to eat it? Crack open an egg, pour the liquid part into a cup, and drink it raw? What do you do with the rest of the egg?

Are you serious?? what do you use the appliance for? decoration?
To be more helpful to your thread though, you can boil the egg, fry, or whatever

But am I getting the same nutritional value if I boil/fry/scramble them or eat the whites raw?

Why don't you just buy egg whites in the carton?

I believe the answer is no you do not get the same benefits if you drink them raw. You need to cook them because the protein needs to be denatured ( happens when it is heated ) in order to get all of the nutrients. Also cooking them will reduce your chances of getting salmonella or what ever it is.

As a previous poster mentioned you can buy egg whites in a carton. Not only does this save you the time of trying to separate the egg whites from the yolk but these can be guzzled down without cooking them. These egg whites have been pasteurized so no need to heat them again. I personally have got tired of cooking eggs and recently switched to the carton ones. Now I put some plain whole oats in a blender poor in 250 ml of egg whites ( equal to 8 egg whites ), add some fruit and blend it up. Taste is ok but you get a large dose of protein, complex carbs, and fibre all in one shot.
Oh I also add in one scoop of protein powder(egg based). This will bring it up to 50g of protein to start my day.

All other things being equal, there's no significant difference in terms of the grams of protein you get.

It's when you use butter etc. to fry / scramble etc. that there may be some nutritional benefits to having them hard boiled or poached instead.

But ' raw ' ?

Why the heck would any average gym rat want to consume ' raw ' egg whites ?

They are just one of many sources of protein - you don't HAVE to eat them.

Anyone looking to increase mass should focus on training hard first - unless you do that, all the the protein in the world isn't going to help you put on any extra muscle.

do NOT eat raw eggs or egg whites...risk of salmonella poisoning

i buy egg whites in cartons, and just pour them onto the skillet in the morning for a quick easy omellette...can add whatever toppings you like in there...treat them just like regular eggs.

Raw egg whites may be contaminated with salmonella and e.coli.

Buying pasteurized egg whites reduces the risk of slamonella but you may still get e.coli.

Foodborne Salmonella can cause gastroenteritis leading to vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and mild fever. Salmonella disease outbreaks have been frequently associated with the use of raw or undercooked eggs in food. Salmonella and other harmful bacteria are inactivated by heat treatments used to pasteurise egg products. The use of pasteurised egg products is recommended for the routine preparation of foods that are not intended to be fully cooked. Right on the money! If you are not really into egg whites why not use egg protein powder? Also dont be scared of eating the complete egg once ina while, they are not as scary as the masses believe.

I decided to start eating egg whites now that I'm on P90X because they are a good source of protein, have few calories, and I really don't even like the yolks. But eating it raw? 'cause everything you see in the movies is just like real life.

Do a ratio of 1 whole egg for every 2 egg whites. Tastes much better.

I, however, fry mine (I buy the egg whites in a carton). Sometimes, I make a mushroom omelet.

If you are going to cook them buy them whole and seperate. Why pay money to have them pasturized and then cook them anyway?

Recipe.

1 cup egg whites pasturized
1 scoop protein powder
1 whole banana
1 tsp of olive oil (leave it out if need be)

why are you looking at just egg whites and not the whole egg?

The idea that whole eggs are very bad for you has been proven false, and personally I enjoy eating whole eggs alot more then just the egg whites.

I drink the egg whites from the carton ... all stores have the .75 cents off coupon near then bringing it to 16 eggs for 2.00 at loblaws or just about 12.5 cents an egg

But be warned that a new study came out a year ago said that more than 6 eggs a week can lead to a higher chance of heart disease and diabetes.

I buy them at costco .Two 16 egg white containers or 32 whites for $3.25 regular price.

They are always comming out with studies and new findings which are just a spin on an old theme.I know too many people who eat FAR more than 6 eggs a week and are in great shape.Everyone from world class athletes to everyday people.I myself consume a few dozen whole eggs a week and have been doing so for the last twenty years.

It's so much more convenient, though. It takes more time to separate each egg. Maybe I should buy the egg whites from Costco?
