Was in costco today and seen they dropped the price on the whalen tv stand to $238.99 at the store near the colossus theater. the store at downsview still sells it for 269.99.
for anyone else who's interested it looks almost like the one in bestbuy.

you can use this stand with or without the tv mount, or even mount the tv on the wall with the included mount. note you need a big tv 52" plus or it just doesn't look right.

I bought the one from Costco, the Chinese made is horrible. The instructions said to first put the top and bottom shelf to the back pole. That went alright and when it came to middle shelf it was horrible, there was a gap of about 2-3 inches and took quite a bit of force and struggling to put the screws on the 2nd shelf attaching it to the side wood supports. Ended up returning it to Costco, was a waste of time to try to assemble it. I looked at the one on display at Kennedy and Steeles in Brampton and clearly the screws were misaligned. Overall I recommend not getting thing, waste of time.

Currently using a ghetto table for our 42" Plasma. Worth a look.

I bought one 2 weeks ago for $269.99. I'll go back for a refund.
Assembling this thing was easy but pretty time-consuming (most of the assembly involved the included allen key). I had a little problem with that middle shelf as well, but having two people greatly helped. I can't imagine anyone incaplable of fastening that one bolt that they had to drag the whole box back to Costco.
Overall, the quality of it is excellent. The good thing on this is the swivelling mount that you could use to horizontally rotate the TV to the direction you want. FS/BB sells a nearly identical stand for $499.99. BTW, if I remembered correctly, this is made in the US, not China.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be needing one of these as well. I bought a new TV a few weeks ago and still haven't gotten around to a proper stand. http://**************/img/1856/y08m1110mhmd/2.gif

I bought this stand when the CDN$ was stronger so the price was around $219. Even at $269, I would not hesitate to buy it again. Installation took some time but this stand is better than anything at this price range.

I bought a similar one at Costco last year
http://www.whalenfurniture.com/products/xls52-8vs.html
and it did take a while to put together but i am very happy with the quality, it's very heavy and solidly built and looks great. With the TV mounted on the arm there is lots of room for all your components on the 3 shelves below it.

good deal on a great stand, got a similar stand by Whalen from Sam's Club (it was $229 I believe), it was time consuming to assemble for me but that was because I put some of the shelves flipped the other way :o but when I got that fixed t was easy and quick :D

Anyone know if this is nationwide. I just bought this thing last week at 269.99, hopefully there is price protection.
And yes, assembly was an absolute pain. But looks great now.

Finger tighten many bolts and align work before tightening down, just like almost every other thing you assemble yourself.
I have had both a 42" Lcd and 50" pdp on mine and I love it.
There are many stands out there I wouldn't trust with a swivel plasma mount, but I would buy this one again.

The trick is to slightly tighten all the bolts. Then, when the whole stand is together, then tighten all the bolts with the allen key. I learned this the hard way. If you start tightening all the bolts right off the bat, at the end, some parts won't fit. These stands are very solid once completely put together and tightened.

How high would a TV be off the ground. I'm thinking of getting this for my bedroom and then a 40" Sammy. Just worried that it may be too low!!!

I've been looking at this exact stand and waiting for it to drop in price.
I see some people say it need 50"+ and others are ok with it.
So will a 42" look ok or not?

i got one too which looked VERY similar to this at Sams Club last summer as well. i paid $200 + tax on it and the quality and build of it is excellent and the glass shelving on it is thick, sturdy, and heavy as well. The wood also looks very clean and upscale. (even though its made in china)

If you use the mount with the stand it is pretty high. In fact much too high for sofa watching. And you can always choose to mount separately on wall.
Will fit in bedroom no problem.

I like the one I got from Wal-Mart for $40 better than this. Seems a bit ugly to me (the wood side stands). Though this obviously has the better plate for mounting to the TV. The WalMart one had such a garbage plate. I had to go buy a Wall Mount to interface the TV to the Stand, so that was another ~$40.
But yea, all Made In China furniture like this is a pain in the ass to assemble, so prepare to be frustrated.

*2 I bought the one at costco last year that was on sale for I think 170 and it was whalen as well. And the key putting any of these units together is leaving in semi loose at first get it together then tighten it to your hearts content. The only prob I ever found was those stupid stickers that are letters so you know where it goes. On the glass it was easy to come off but the wood was a pain.

Good one;)
BTW, Costco has 2 different wood colors for the Whalen TV Stand ; the "blonde" wood or the dark cherry red that I got
edit: This thing is one tough mother****er to put together. Need lots of patience, good light, maybe a personal assistant, and definitely NO alcohol.
It's a nice looking unit for the Costco price, but not what BB or FS want for it

i bought one last week, the wood is darker than the ones from january this year.
but i end up returning it coz i had the smaller 46" tv, and it's way too high on this mount (height not adjustable), i guess it would be much better for 50"+ tv.
it was $269 and i'm in ab

$254.99 with 10 + in stock as of tonight. 22" x 22" x 64" i believe were the dimensions ... i know 22 W and 22 H for sure. Not my style though ... but nice part is the stand can be taken off and you can use the LCD brackets for a wall mount .. just it would be flush.

It will definitely hold a 46" tv no problem. I have a 52" on it without issue. Kamiru mentioned that his 46" was too high for his liking. The tv comes with brackets that attach to the tv. These brackets have multiple screw holes on them, so there is some play as to the height the tv can be mounted.

I mounted my Panasonic 50" Plasma on it without any problems. Even on the lowest mounting point on the bracket, it is a little higher than I would like, but its is acceptable. I like not having the TV on the top shelf...and the swivel on the mounting arm is nice.
I paid $269 about a month ago - I saw it for $254 yesterday at Mississauga South...may go back for a price adjustment.

Yeah we currently have a 50" pdp on ours and it looks great imo. The 42" lcd we had on it before looked a little small, but the colours clashed as well.
She told me we needed a 50" after hanging the 42 on it so win-win for sure

yea height adjustment can be made on the bracket. i've tried the holes for the lowest possible mount for the 46", it's still sitting too high and doesn't seem to look right so i gave up. ordered a smaller one (upto 47") from costco.ca see what happens. will post pic if anyone is interested.

After mounting it, did you measure the height from the floor to the bottom of the tv? I have a 46" tv too. The demo at Costco was placed on the upper shelf & I couldn't measure the height. My guess is it's probably at least 3.5-4 feet high.

Went to the Best Buy in Newmarket. The rep 'checked' with someone in management and informed me that they would not price match a scanned copy of a Best buy receipt "because it could be part of a package deal". I pointed out that such a package deal would show up on the receipt as well, but he wouldn't budge. I'll have to try the one in Vaughan to see what their reaction is. Having said that, I don't imagine I'll have much luck getting them to match their own receipt if the date and store address aren't shown on the scanned copy.

Not sure if the stand is online though. BB customer service they will and have to match Costco.ca. If the salesman declines this, obviously he/she doesn't fully know their own policy!!! :)

Is it the same stand they carry? It looks like the costco one, the wood curves out a bit at the bottom, and from the BB pic, it looks more straight. Anyways, in Quebec, they do whatever they want, so if someone gets this PMed here please let me know.
