Lt. Jim Mueller with the Metro Robbery Unit said all their suspect wanted was a one-way ticket back to prison, preferably in the federal system.

"It's one of the more unusual bank robberies we've seen here," he said.

It was Wednesday morning when a man walked into a Stock Yards Bank on Mud Lane in far southern Jefferson County.

He allegedly handed a teller a note demanding cash and indicating he was armed with a gun.

"The teller complied with the suspect's demand and the suspect had a seat and indicated he was going to wait for police," Mueller said. "He wouldn't take the money."

Mueller said when officers arrived, 38-year-old Edward Taylor Sutherland III raised his hands and surrendered. It turns out he did not have a gun, either.

"He indicated he was tired of living with his parents, that he did not have a job, did not have a vehicle and wanted to go back to prison," Mueller said.

Sutherland's mother, who didn't want to appear on camera, said her son hadn't worked for months.

Sutherland, who has spent time behind bars in the past, told investigators he decided to rob a bank so he would avoid state prison and instead go to federal prison, where conditions are better.

But this case doesn't qualify for federal prosecution.

"He's facing one count of robbery, which carries 10 to 20 years in the state penitentiary," Mueller said.

Sutherland's mother said she's sorry her son is likely headed back to prison. She's also sorry he chose her bank to rob.

Sutherland is being held on a $50,000 full cash bond

Whats up with this guy? Wanting to go to jail, thats a new one.

That's a new one?

You seriously are without a clue.

I am not going to even bother explaining it.

Lots of homeless people do that, they carry a weapon of some sort so they'll likely get +2 years (federal).

There are a number of cases where they'll "rob" a convenience store then have a seat just outside and wait for the cops.

edit; Also a correctional officer I spoke with said he'd do the same thing, it's better than living outside in the cold begging for money, dumpster diving, etc.

you know your life sucks when you prefer to be in jail....

Everybody's like 'jails ain't tough enough, jails ain't tough enough, we gotta have the death penalty, jails ain't tough enough.' Yo, jails are f----d up, okay? Don't believe the hype. The problem is, the reason jails are so crowded, is because life is f-----d up too. People are broke, people are starving... s--t, life is catching up to jail! S--t, if you live an old project, a new jail ain't that bad!" - Chris Rock

Stuff like this happens all the time, although it happens mostly in the winter months.

What's particularly interesting is that it costs about $90K annually (per person) to house someone in a federal institution (higher if it's medium / max security).

So logically in the case of people that are homeless, it would be reasonable to suggest using that $90K (likely far less) towards getting them on track. but eh :D

In Canada they would just give you probation and a stern lecture.

+1 lol

ill explain briefly i guess since people in this thread are drifting away to homelessness even though it said he wanted to return back to prison..

some people when they are released from prison cannot handle the world.
everything is new and different and the person is now ...

.. youre right too much to explain LOL

during the great depression, many people would purposely commit crimes to get arrested. 3 square meals a day at least, better then what most people could get during then.
