Remove texture on walls?

I need some opinions... should I remove the texture off the masterbed room walls(not sure about ceiling yet)?


Is there any other way besides sanding?


My wife is due on June and I'd like to renovate the masterbed room and have it ready for our baby. Our house is 35yrs old. I'm kinda thinking of replacing the popcorn ceiling too but I've heard older houses might have asbestos in them. I'll have to get my ceilings checked for that.

I'd like to start on the walls, then replace the carpet with hardwood.

I moved into a house with textured walls. I starting by ripping down and replacing them but found it to be a lot of work. I tried sanding, but it made a hiuge mess.

Finally, I settled on applying a skim coat of drywall mud to the walls, followed by a light sanding. Use the 10" putty knife and start putting on really thin coats, allow to dry, sand a little, and repeat.

I bought a low dust formula mud (particles are a little bigger when sanding) and found that the dust didn't really spread too much.

thanks... i was talking to a coworker that does real estate part time. He says just leave it, all the houses here in cali or most of them have textured walls.


Yeah i kinda figured it would make a lot of mess sanding all of it off. I probably might not do it... I'm also going to get my pop corn ceiling checked if it has asbestos.

if the textured ceiling is just plain builders texture, it is water soluble, and comes off really easy if you wet it first. I did almost the entire house, scraping off texture, after wetting it with a paint roller first. It was pretty easy to do :) ( mind you at 6'8", I could reach the ceiling ;) )

yup thanks for the tip. That is what I'm going to do once I get the results from the lab that it does not have asbestos.


Houses down here in the states might have astestos.. the house my wife got is 35yrs old and that is around when they were using asbestos for popcorn ceilings.
