Its impossible to say but it can be either. I used to work there in cameras and I can tell you that due to the policies they have (3 repairs then replace, 60 days then replace) sometimes people get a replacement camera and the FS refurbed camera gets sold as OPEN BOX. I know you wont believe this but I'd made a point of telling people the story behind a camera if i knew it. Some open box is rental, or even totally unused, other is actually refurbished. This basically only happened at the store level, but I image when the repair depot built up a good stock of items they might make them web only as well.
However the best way to tell the difference between a FS and manufacturer reburb is the age of the product. For the first year warranty is with canon regardless and since XSi is new, well this are basically 99% certainly canon refurb. If they were XTi or XT then it would be more like 50/50 id say, but that is just to say I would have no idea.
Short answer: almost certainly canon refurb

most likely it is FS refurbished.. i wouldnt trust any refurbished product unless it was refurbished from the manufacturer. Canon refurbished products from Canon are tested and assured to be fully functional with no cosmetic defects or whatsoever. I purchased a refurbished Canon XT from Canon directly and the unit they sent me was just like a brand new one. Most likely the "refurbished" ones at futureshop have been tampered with by other customers, returned units, open box etc
If it is a canon refurbished unit, the box will be a basic white box. It shouldn't be in the original packaging. Pehaps someone can double check

I wonder if the included battery is also refurbished. if that's the case, then will certainly need to buy a brand new one as a back up at least.

I emailed FS and they told me that it was refurbished by either the manufacturer (Canon) or a 3rd party non-manufacturer and not FS. I would have to ask Canon to find out if it was Canon or 3rd party.

check out sterlingtek canon batteries, they are excellent batteries and give better life then the stock batteries.

unless things have changed, futureshop does not own/operate a refurbishing facility?
Precision Camera Repair does the refurbishing for Canon themselves (some of the Canon line) and most other manufacturers.
A lot of these kind of specialized knowledge things arn't done in house even by these manufacturers let alone an end user stores like futureshop. If this has changed and futureshop is actually running their own facility i would be greatly surprised.

Warranty is 90 days only according to the website. Not certain whether that's covered by Futureshop or Canon though.

FWIW, my brother ordered and the unit he received was a genuine Canon refurb in mint condition. If he said it was new, I wouldn't have doubted it. Damn good deal...
P.S. They still have the XTi for $349 which is also a great deal.
