CT recently had 4.4L of Castrol Syntec for $24.98. I thought that was a pretty hot deal at the time so I picked up 4 jugs.
Any reason that Mobile 1 would be worth a higher price (or are all brand name synthetics considered equal?)

That Castrol Syntec is not "fully" Synthetic oil. Google it and you will see the reason. I think Castrol only has 1 type of fully Synthetic oil made from Germany but don't think they sell it here.
Not only Mobil 1 is fully Synthetic oil, it is recommend by most if not all car manufacturers. ;)

This isn't that great of a price. Usually once per year Cdn Tire has 4.4L jugs of Mobil 1 for $29.99 and usually one other time per year they have a 4.4L jug with a 1L jug attached for between $29.99 to $34.99. When those deals are on I usually pick up 4 to 6 jugs and I'm set for a year for our two cars.

I get my oil changed about every 10,000 km at a local garage (I could go longer) and they put in Amsoil synthetic oil.
I used to change my own oil, but it's not worth it - you have to get rid of the oil. Bring it in and they have the facilities to safely get rid of it.
Changing your oil and filter in the cold winter is no fun.
That said, I should carry a quart of Amsoil with me just in case.

Google it dood....Mobile 1 stopped using Type IV PAO base stock a few years ago. Bottom line, it is comparable to Syntec.

Yeah I was still using Mobil 1 for a couple of years before realizing that they changed to a Synthetic blend. Buggers!

BMW/MINI recommends Castrol Synthetic....And the recommend oil change intervals on my car are 24,000Km (Yes, 24K), so if its Castrol my car wants, it's Castrol it gets. If my engine dies, the dealership will be flipping the bill. :cheesygri
(I change my own oil every 12K just for my own piece of mind.)

I rather use full Synthetic oil like Mobil 1 or Amsoil (Type IV) than something "comparable" on my Audi.
To me, a few extra dollars are worth it. It's always better be safe than sorry. :)

Not for me. McCowan & Sheppard location charged me that stupid disposal fee.
I now drive down to the Scarborough Disposal Facility on Nugget Ave & Markham Rd. I brought them 6 cases (each case contained 3x 4.4L jugs) of used oil. No charge.

I am sticking with CT brand synthetic for now as my TL is aging past it's prime. Since I do 6 months oil change at around 6-7000 km range, I don't worry about changing oil in winter. I do them in spring and fall to save myself aggravation in winter.
In Winnipeg, I return used oil/filter to Enviro West oil for recycling. I entered some of their promo draws in the past and won a microwave last year. Not a bad deal.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance is the oil to get if you want the full syn. A bit more expensive, but IMO, worth it if you care about your car and are a spirited driver.

It looks like YMMV. I talked to someone in the Auto service dept at CT and he said he would take my used oil for free. (As long as i dont bring in gallons of it all at once.) Not sure if he said so because i was buying two jugs of Oil from the same location but im sure "most" CT's will take it if your nice about it.
I didn't know this, but they charge a ECO tax on any petroleum product. (look at your receipt.)
So, for 4.4L of Castrol Syntec 5w-30, CT charged me $0.20 more. Bought 2 jugs because i had a rain cheque from last weeks' flyer sale....so $0.40 on top of the price of 2 jugs. Good ol' gov't at it again. Apparently this was set in place last year when the oil prices were through the roof...

Castrol vs Mobil vs Amsoil, etc...
Unless you are a Chemical Engineer that works with motor oil for a living, I wonder if anyone actually knows the details behind the brands/products?

Castrol 0w30 is the german castrol full synthetic.. i live in markham and all the walmarts around me (richmond hill, stoufville, markville, steeles and markham rd) sell it in 1L bottles so its get pretty expensive to buy 4L. Read the bottle, it has to say made in germany on the back.
All synthetics perform pretty much the same on 0 -6000 km drain intervals.. go any longer than that and then it actually matters which synthetic you use. So if you stick to 6000km drain intervals, yo ucan pretty much use any synthetic you want..

I'm not a chemical engineer, but I can tell you that Mobil1 isn't as good as it once was. It used to be fully synthetic, but it no longer is, as it's now a blend. Still a good oil, but not as good as it once was. Nowadays, some even say Pennzoil Platinum is as good, or better.
If you want fully synthetic oil, get:
Amsoil (their high end oil is fully synthetic)
Royal Purple
Eneos
Castrol 0W30 (also known as German Castrol)
Castrol 0W30 and the Amsoil can be bought at CT. Royal Purple can be found at various performace shops across the GTA. Eneos is a great oil that's from Japan. I just picked up 2 cases of it 0W20, from the only authorized dealer in Canada, who is in Niagara. I got each case (6 x 1 liters = 6 liters per case) for $60 + tax. Should be enough for 3 oil changes, which according to my mileage will be about a year and a half's worth.

Yeah... I am not trying to put anyone down. Whenever I read an OIL deal there is always recommendation and contradictionsbetween people. I also end up wondering how much we actually know is true and how much is just "what we read or heard from someone else,"
I just did a quick google search, this site did a kinda cool test.

I thought this was part of the eco-tax thing. You can bring your old oil and filter back to the place where you brought your new stuff from and they are suppose to take it for free.
edit - found it's voluntary collection. Retail outlet place collects, then calls the government for disposal:

Wow, this is pretty bad (good thing I didn't read most of it):
The one point proven is just how much better synthetic oil is over a "mineral" or petroleum based product.
Thanks for pulling this out of thin air. I think the report only identified Shell Helix Plus as petroleum based (and it didn't fair particularly poorly).
Mineral oils ... don't have the additives inherent in synthetics. Synthetics on the other hand, by virtue of the fact they're man made, can be equipped from the outset with any number of additives
WT? additives are added to the base stock isn't it?
Horsepower will be affected by the viscosity of the oil used (thicker oil have more friction), so it's refreshing to see somebody ignore basic guidelines and do the test anyways with full spectrum viscosity.
The supposed advantages of group-4&5 oils are better low temperature characteristics, resistance to breakdown, lack of processing impurities,...
I don't think this report tested any of these issues.

Canadian Tire charges the ECO FEE it seems that it is pure profit for them as they are just downloading the "recovery" costs they are being charged onto the consumer. This seems deceptive because it is not included in the price and only appears on the receipt at time of purchase. Walmart has also charged this add on fee. Yet other stores do not show it as a separate line item and include it in the price. Makes price comparison shopping a bit more difficult as the fees are not listed in the advertised price anywhere. In my opinion there should a law against this false advertising. At least with Tax we know what we are paying. Personally I do not appreciate being charged more then the expected price + tax
It really seems like another Mcguinty liberal Tax grab avoiding the term tax, like the health care premium TAX! which was the biggest tax grab in history and used to fund what healthcare? really? Why be efficient when they can just tax us more?

Would it be okay to put 0w30 esso xd-3 oil inside a 5w30 civic spec engine?
I also don't know what oil I currently have in my car and that it hasn't been changed since last november so they say. But I haven't driven the car too much, say only 4000km. Should I leave the oil longer or just change it? With the xd-3 I plan to just leave the oil there for a whole year.
