I was at zellers today and noticed they finally dropped the price on the HP LaserJet 1018. It is a 12ppm laser, older model but for $49.99 who cares. Comes with a 1000page starter toner.

Good deal, good printer. 1000 pages on the starter cartridge will last an average home user (not student) a long time.

The way the price tag was on the shelf I would suspect its chain wide. I bought it from the simcoe/401 zellers in oshawa. There were 3 left.

$49.99 is a great price for a laser, it cost the same or even less than a replacement ink cartridge. Good timing, I was looking for a new printer, thanks for the find.

I have this printer works really well, but recently I have been having A LOT of spooler errors, i know it's not really the printer's fault. I have never had this problem with other printers, and it seems a lot of other people have been having spooler errors when using this printer.

There seems to be a lot of solutions, none of them really work that well, I found getting rid of Adobe PDF reader worked best.

Also do those filler kits work well? I have used them for inkjet printers and they get messy and wreck the printer.

I have a HP1012 (~4 years old) and a HP1020 (~3 years old), which is exactly the same as the HP1018.

HP1012 came with a full 12A cartridge and the HP1020 came with a starter cartridge. Both the toners are at the end of their life (developing streaks). How do you guys make the drum of the toner last longer then the default amount of toner inside? It seems that HP has timed the 'drum life' and the amount of 'toner left' perfectly.

my 1018 is probably about 2yrs old. Still using original toner. I would have no issues with recommending this printer. Zero issues. I keep it off all the time and it has a quick startup.

My Hp 1020 came with a full sized cartridge.

I thought that the 1018 was the first printer of this line that came with the half toner.

To the guy who says the drum dies when the toner does, this amazon review: http://www.amazon.com/review/RQZ4972U17X0M says that the toner can be refilled upto 4 times.

Has anyone used this kit?

How easy is it to refill a regular cartridge?

Are the included instructions good since I'm a first tiemr when it comes to refill a laser printer.

I have a Brother printer and was wondering if its gonna be easy to fill my present cartridge.
Unlike the HP I don't need to drill a hole since its already there.
I hope that makes things easier and cheaper.

I've refilled a 12A two or three times. The hard part is making the hole. I melted it with a soldering iron, but I'm considering drilling next time and then putting a vacuum over the hole to suck out the scraps.

Sorry, that was me. I went to the Richmong hill Zellers on my way home from work but they were OOS. They were very nice and checked stock at all the stores east of there. The only one they could find was the one at Woodbine, which was a bit out of the way for me. I knew they were going quick so I called and reserved it. They have a policy were they will hold something for 24 hours if you call.

I recall them being sold in Boxing Day deals at FS/BB in 2006, 2007, so they were basically reliable starter lasers 2-3 years ago. You can find several current models (Samsung/Brother/HP) selling for similar prices these days if you keep an eye on the sales. I think FS had a brand new HP laser for $40 a couple of months ago.

After buying, I learned the 1018 is not Mac compatible. Go figure.

A couple of google searches and 2 hours later I got it running with the following software.

Only drawback is you have to run a script to initialize the firmware every time you turn it on. Otherwise, it prints perfectly.

It's like most printers (and other products), it takes a while for refurbished or after-market replacements to get into production. That's one of the reasons why some stores collect used cartridges so they can ship them to manufacturers for refilling or refurbishing. It's quicker for after-market suppliers to do that than to produce cartridge housings completely from scratch.

Hmm. I heard all the talk about combining the GST and PST next year, but they failed to mention this one on the TV news. Had I known I might have looked for this printer yesterday (I thought I knew a location with stock, at least a few months ago), but now I won't bother. 10.01% tax? Sounds a bit of an odd figure, but politicians probably think it looks prettier, just as they hope the new tax grab sounds "harmonious". No bonus HBC points again this month too. The fee does not care about the price of the unit. The fee is on the type of unit so a printer will always be $5.05 regardless of how much the printer costs.

I bought this a while back from bestbuy at 99.99 its great buy very happy with it....

also my ink is out how much for the toner? and is this one refillable ? thanks

oh by the way ... I had lots of Print Spool crashes and errors the final work around after tonz of searching is the this ....

download the driver .exe file form hp's website ... DONT double click it. simply use winrar to extract the files from the exe by right clicking and extract option.

then plug in the printer and use the driver files found by extracting the exe to install the printer. DONT use hp's exe to install the printer cuz it will install the bad spool files.

simple as that.

Why not keep it simple and just charge $5. What's with the extra nickel? Typically dumb McGuinty decision.

Still, as somebody who hates the practice of some manufacturers, especially Lexmark, of dumping cheap "disposable" printers on our market (and into our landfills) rather than lowering replacement ink prices to affordable levels, I do like the fact that this will make those wasteful products less attractive.

I wish the governments would put pressure on the manufacturers and retailers to lower the price of supplies though - that would actually help the environment, rather than just being another tax grab like the old tire tax which never was applied to helping the environment.

when did Ontario get subjected to the environmental fees?

Why are you pushing Japanese cars? The domestic makers are already in enough trouble without people kicking them while they're down.

McGuinty's lot quietly slipped it into effect this week. Kept me from buying another printer, so they've saved me money. Didn't help the economy much though.

Can any parts of laser printers, or their supplies, expire while unused and in storage? Just wondering in case I see a good deal on toner, say, enough to want to stock up. I have a Samsung laser from BD myself.

Generally no, as long as it's kept properly in storage.

You could always go to a toner refill place and have them refill the cartridge. Then you can buy and add the ink powder yourself since they did all the trouble of drilling the refill hole in the correct area ;) saves a ton of money

So where exactly are these printers being stored? I've called almost all the Zellers in Toronto/Scarb/North York and none of them have it - do you think it's b/c the electronics department don't even know? Like it's not held in that section anymore?

Where'd you guys find them?

It's a 2 or 3 year old model. Odds are the majority of stores simply don't have them. The fact that any stores still had stock at all is testimony to Zellers' poor stock management - these should have been sold out over a year ago.

Just picked out up at Edmonton Millswood Zellers yesterday.
I have been searching for it across the city. However, no luck.
Yesterday I was shopping at CT and there is a Zellers near by.
There were 5 (now 4 left after mine) in the electronics department, on the top of the shelf.
The price tag was showing $149.99.
I took it to the front and asked for a price check.
The staff scanned it and told me it is $49.99. I told him the tag shows $149.99.
But he wasn't shocked at all, he said it's $49.99. I think he might sell it to someone already.
I picked one up for about $60. (there is $8.00 in Alberta for environmental fee).
Overall it is a good deal since I need one to print my thesis.

A bit OT, but when are HBC going to resume the bonus points coupons? It looks like they've let another month slip by, and without the bonus points there really isn't much incentive to shop there. That's why they've always got all this years-old stock sitting forgotten on their shelves.

I don't know if i should buy this printer or keep my laserjet 4L that i have now for 10 ten years and the original toner just got empty.

They say 4L does 3500 pages but i sure did more in 10 years.

I know the p1018 should be faster. But i could just order a refill kit 6.95usd with the tool to make holes 6.95usd plus shipping. that would easily make 25$ cad.

But i don't know if the drums will keep up another 10 years?

Great price. Two left in stock when I was there. Regarding the cartridge refilling, I've heard this works good. But no need for the hole melting tool. The downside when using a drill is the shavings getting inside. Hold the cartridge over your head and drill it upside down. All the shavings fall out.

The HP Laserjet 1018 looks like a good basic laser printer for her and I was able to buy one from Zellers for her at the $49.95 price + taxes and $8 enviro fee.

The Samsung Mono Laser Printer (ML-2240) is currently on sale at FS for $59.99 until tomorrow. In fact I picked it up from FS on Monday and they sold it to me for $53.99 + taxes + $8 enviro fee during their CA sale.

Look up the difference between laser and ink-jet printers, then you'll see the difference.

For the record, this is a LASER printer.

My local store still have 5 printers and they lowered the price to 29.99$ and no one really cares.Too bad I bought it when it was 49.99. I live in Quebec but far away from any major city so I'm probably among a very few RFDer in my area.

Zellers St Laurent had them at $29.99 as well.

I bought the last two (one for me one for my nephew).

The price tag was $49.99 but the guy there told me that it was on sale for $29.99 before he even scanned it.

It must be all across Canada.

Anyone running Windows 7 Release Candidate 64 bits with this printer?

I bought it back in April and I was under the Win 7 beta since January and was able to install the driver manually and the printer worked... but since I reformatted for the Win7 RC, I cannot get it to install anymore! :(

This is not the same printer... Zellers has the older version and the reason why the 1018 is superior is because the toner that comes with it is good for up to 2000 pages vs 1500 pages for the p1005. The toner for 1018 also is easier and cheaper to refill

I had a bit of time on my hands this afternoon so I checked 2 local Zellers (Oshawa Centre - nothing, 5 Points Mall - Oshawa 1 ... and I bought it.)

I can't get my head around the additional Ontario $5.00 recycling fee. If I left an old printer for disposal then it makes sense. I'm paying to dispose this printer as soon as I buy it. Strange since I'll probably have to pay again to dispose of it (hopefully that won't be for awhile). Don't get me wrong, I'm all for saving the planet, but the majority of this recycling issue is based on junk science and fear mongering not to mention a money grab at times. Meanwhile, there are companies experiencing huge financial windfalls as a result of the plastic bag fallacy. It makes me green alright... as in wanting to be sick!

Well enough of that. Back to today's more pleasurable thoughts of my printer purchase and scoring a FS price match on the BBC box set of The Office ($6.06 total).

Different cartridge all together. When my Samsung toner empties I won't be hard pressed to get a new toner cartridge right away since I'll press my HP into action. BTW, toner cartridges for the Samsung is priced at over $100 unless you purchase one of those generic brand cartridges (around 80 bucks) from an ink store.

Price scanned at $34.99 and then the $5.05 enviro fee was added separately on the bill. Not sure why the printer price went up by $5 (from $29.99 to $34.99). I didn't argue with the cashier as I usually find Zellers staff not particularly helpful.

But I only paid $24.99 +$5.05 envir fee +taxes :D

Currently they're offering an additional 50% off last clearance price for all computer accessories.

I believe the fluctuation in pricing on this item is due to the various "additional" discount percentages they offer on clearance items at different times. Sometimes the % off goes up, sometimes down.

The printer is wired, so a software/driver issue?
What OS are you using and do you have the latest drivers specific to that OS?
(download off HP site)
Also try plugging the printer into another available port.

I think it was a clearance item back then too - note that the none of the $29.99 prices were from the heavily populated urbarn centres. There's probably still many to be had in ON, but not in the GTA that's for sure.

Best thing I can recommend to is call a place and ask them to transfer it to a location near you.

*Btw: If anyone is looking to sell theirs...

I'm running Windows XP, with the latest LJ1018 printer drivers. I've tried plugging the printer into different ports and I end up with the same results.

When the printer is setup for "stand alone" operation, it functions normally. As soon as it's shared, printing from network printers doesn't work and their print jobs end up "clogging" the print queue. I've read that this is due to the host-based driver, but I haven't come across any solution that seems to work.

If anyone has this setup as a shared printer and has it working, I'd appreciate any tips you have.

Thanks.

I had a problem smiliar at my work, not with this model a 1022n but it could have the same problem

first thing i did is upgraded the firmware version to the newest on the hp website

then i uncheck the birectionnal mode in the port tab of the printer properties,

i find bidirectionnal printing cause alot of problem with network shared printer from a server, (hp 1022n and hp 2600n)

in my setup the printer is connected to the server by network and shared on the server (windows server 2003 (but work alot like windows xp for sharing))

and it should not have any impact thats it connected trought network or usb since when i had this problem the sever could always print but client could not.

I'm pretty sure you have the same problem, it's possible upgrading the firmware won't have a change too, but with 1022n i had problem with the printer it took 2 print job to wake the printer from stand by, now it works fine :p

hope it helps

Many thanks for the response. Your english is good, don't apologize for it!

I checked on the HP website and there doesn't seem to be a firmware update for the 1018... I've tried disabling the bidirectional support, but it doesn't seem to help... from my google searches it looks like the 1018 isn't a good candidate if you intend to share it on a network.

Looks like I'm going to have to think more about taking it back.

johngeush
Jul 27th, 2009, 11:54 PM
did you try uninstalling the printer,

installing the printer

disable bidirectionnal support

assure that the queue is clear and not in pause state

you could also try to restart the print spooler (control panel --- admin tools --- service ---- print spooler --- restart)

also check the security of the sharing, try with an admin account

anyway, if that does not work, i have no clue, I dont see why the printer would not print the computer just transfer the data, i dont think the printer can see that its the computer or another on the network that send the task, it just received a task sent trought the usb

i dont have anymore idea, in theory it should work... but it's not always true :(

I am running Windows 7 and sharing this printer, and get the exact same problem. I was able to get some drivers for our mac laptop which work, but the print queue keeps getting clogged up as you say.

I find that if I restart the print spooler service that gets things printing again, but its a pain. When I get some time I will see if there are any newer printers that use the same print engine and may have compatible drivers.

Thx OP. I went to a few locations when this deal was first posted and came up empty. But I lucked into one yesterday at a location I know I had already checked previously - so keep your eyes open.

It was the $50 price and item had to be manually entered to find it (wouldn't self-scan at the price checkers around the store).

Later on, I'll see if it works with my DLink DIR-655 router via the Sharepoint USB feature. Anyone tried networking it this way?
