T1i will be a better buy, it will be available in May,

It's going to cost $400 more. It's an improved Xsi but it's almost like they're pricing it for a completely different market.

XSi and T1i seem to be completely different creatures and price points.
I would say this deal is warm though considering FS had the Body+Lens+Extra battery + Case for 450$ on boxing day.

That would be the US MSRP. I believe it'll be $200 more in Canada.

I believe Dell had a boxing day sale on the Canon XS + lens for $399. I tried to find the thread, but too many hits, maybe someone else can link it. So the price will drop...eventually! :D

And you can get the far superior 40D with the far superior 17-85 IS lens for that price...

I'd rather use a dedicated HD camcorder than have a DSLR that tries to do too many things at once (especially the first generation). No continuous autofocus, no thank you.

Yeah, the XSi is going to go further down in price when the T1i comes out. Though the T1i can record video so I might just have to splurge for that feature.

Video on dSLRs is terrible compared to a HD camcorder for 95% of uses.

But it sells cameras.

Yeah, but I hate the idea of having to carry a DSLR with lenses and a flash PLUS a HD camcorder to events, constantly switching between the two. I hate carrying my cell phone and an iPod as it is. And a HD camcorder is at least $800. Maybe if I was rich. But even then, no thanks.

Video on even the 5D II is very poor.

You cant focus for the life of you using the 3" LCD,
motion turns in to wavy eyes and heads,
if you do hit a prefocus,
99% of the time things end up out of focus due to small depth of field
and you only have very limited shutter speeds up to 1/60 I think.

The XTi will only be the same or worse.

Dont make the mistake of buying a dSLR with video and think it will ever come close to replacing a camcorder for general use.

Buy with a return policy if your buying a dslr for video ...

The XSi is a significant step-up from the previous Rebels and the XS, so it's a fairly decent deal, although most people would rather see the IS lens included.

The video in the new model is, as others have mentioned, quite primitive and should be seen strictly as a "bonus" feature as it doesn't focus and there are many restrictions involved. However it's great if you're a amateur movie maker on a budget as the low-light image quality and the shallow depth of field have no peer in the camcorder market in the similar price bracket. If you plan your shots carefully to work within the limitation, the DSLRs can create that movie-like look impossible with affordable camcorders.

I think some people misunderstand the video part. I am not sure about the new 500D, but check out this like, you can never do this with a camcorder with continuous auto focus. You can not pan in from out of focus to focus on the subject.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu3bQqCTAIw

The camcorder is equivalent to a point and shoot camera, very convenient with continuous focus, but you loose all the capability to adjust like a DSLR. So, it is a completely different market.

says who? you? I'd hardly say that 2 extra autofocus points, spot metering, and slightly improved body is worth the extra $200 you pay for the Xsi over the XS.

just to clarify what people mean when they say a 5D Mark II is bad @ video

EDIT: 56k warning, slow processor warning, pretty much don't click that unless you can play Blu-Rays.

Too cool. I have a nikon D90, and it is amazing for video when not doing too much panning, and of course its manual focus. But with the variety of lenses, you can't limit your imagination.

I'm in the market for a Rebel XS, unfortunately I missed out on the good deals at Future Shop a while ago. Does anyone have any idea if they or any other stores will put them on sale soon? If they have it again for 499.99 with all those extras I'd be all over it like a fat kid on cake.

I was considering buying used, but most of them are asking a lot, there seems to be no price drop on new on sale vs. used for a few months, so I would much rather wait until a sale comes up, but I want to purchase by May, so I don't know if I'll have any luck..

I am so glad I jumped in Future Shop $499.99 deal for XS kit.

I paid $565 in total, sold the IS kit lens, grip and extra battery separately on Ebay and got $315 (net) back.

So $250 all included for XS body + a decent camera bag...

I then bought a used 17-85 USM lens for $340...

XSi body for $599 is only a warm deal compared with BB $699 BD deal.

I don't know if you have membership, but Costco has the silver Rebel XS with the 18-55 IS lens for $489.99. Granted, no case + battery, but if you're in a hurry to get it, it's a viable option.

I'm still playing around with mine, learning new things about it. No, I didn't RTFM. :)

What's the diff between the XS and XSi?

~2mp, slightly larger LCD, more autofocus points, .5fps faster for burst shooting, etc. I couldn't justify the extra $250-300 for the XSi when I got my XS. I'm very pleased with my XS, too. I'd rather spend the difference on a better lens than the little bit more I would've had from the XSi.

I thought the T1i can't auto focus in video mode?

Though spec wise it's nice, the T1i is priced pretty high for an entry level cam (rebel series). Ask people who have bought an entry level dSLR what thier main deciding factor was in choosing one and I would say a majority would say price. T1i isn't exactly cheap.

edit:

http://photography.suite101.com/article.cfm/canon_eos_rebel_t1i_digital_slr_with_hd_video

There are issues over autofocus in video mode and these are shared with Live View operation as well. The sensors for Canon’s excellent DSLR autofocus system are located in the optical viewfinder and use the reflection off the mirror to operate. In video mode the mirror is up blocking the autofocus sensors view of the image, so autofocus does not work. Canon came up with a number of solutions. Firstly there is manual focus, then there is quick mode where the mirror is dropped down momentarily to allow autofocus and then flips back up out of the way.

All I have to say is damn you Canon for all these updates! They make my XTi look and feel ancient. At the end of the day, the photographer makes the shot, not the camera. ;)

Hi,

Been looking around for an XSI deal, and looks like its OOS in quite a few places....but there is one left at the Calgary NE Future Shop (3319 - 26 Avenue NE) yesterday PM.

They were offering it for $550 (reg 650) right away, and they said brand new. Was very tempted...but trying to find package with lens.

Hi guys
been looking for a Canon XS or XSI now ppl say they aint much difference between both of them. I found a deal at cosco. the XS with a 75-300 lens and 18-55 and a bag for $729 and the XS itself with the 18-55 IS Lens is $490 now the 75-300 is retailing for $280. So what should i do? buy the xsi that come with 1 lens for about $780 or go for the $729 which is the XS? Is the extra megapixel and little extra worth $200 more for the XSI?

Thx guys

The megapixel difference is negligible unless you love to crop lots.

If you love shooting in RAW, the xsi is faster and the body has a nicer feel to it.

9AF points vs 7AF? Meh.
.5 inch bigger screen? Meh.

Otherwise you are paying an extra $200 for pretty much nothing.
