View Full Version : Air Canada: Vancouver to Tokyo Airfare $560 Return Mid to Late May Departures

SuSHi

I've been monitoring this price a while and the fuel surcharges for Japan dropped about $185 cdn each way as of April 1st

The date's I've been looking at were leaving from mid-april and returning late may, Tango Plus airfare of $229 each way from YVR to NRT

Comes out to $600 but if you don't use the Aeroplan option it knocks off $15 each way

EDIT
pretty much anything monday to friday starting may 11th to may 31st and returning in july is 224 each way from YVR
depatures in june are 269 each way

just avoid holiday weekends

i booked may 13th to july 9th for $560 after taxes and knocking off aeroplan

Yup, I found some cheaper flights too. However, I would not decline the AP miles for only $30RT savings, as it is such a long flight.

I'm hesitant to book as well because of Air Can's uncertainty. Their CEO resigned the other day as well so that's spurring rumours of a pending bankruptcy.

If you buy with your credit card, you'll be refunded.
I was refunded by mastercard (normal card, nothing shiny) when Zoom Airlines went belly up last fall.

Their policy: if you dont get the good/service you paid foor , you are refunded.

In my case, I had to wait until the day of flgiht was passed to be refunded because they werent bankrupt yet, just under "la loi de la protection des créanciers", which meant they could resurrect any time...

With these talks about bankruptcy and poor service from Air Canada, am I better off paying a bit more of a premium to go with JAL to fly to Japan? This is the dilemma I'm facing right now.

Guys, relax, Air Canada is not going anywhere, the government has to much in it for them to let it go. There is no flag ship carrier in Canada to take over.

Ok, so I booked 2 days ago. Why should I pay for a fuel surcharge that people aren't paying for today? Do I have grounds to call them up and get a refund? Anyone tried this before?

I've flown to Japan twice with Air Canada and once with JAL and by far, JAL has much better service. If the premium isn't much and or if you don't mind paying extra go with JAL. I've flown with Air Canada on other occasions and while the service wasn't exactly stellar, it wasn't nearly as bad as the Japan flight. Aside from a couple of really nice flight attendants, the others were just horrible.

But hey, you might get lucky and not get the flight attendants that I had (hopefully because they were fired).

Too bad there is uncertainty in Air canada's operations right now...

So, you mean to Tokyo, right?

I have two questions here (sorry, I am not quite familar with searching and booking airline tickets):

1. The price listed is before fuel surcharge and tax, right? How many other charges will be added on top of it?

http://www.aircanada.com/en/offers/air/asia_apr09/asia_apr09.html

2. I tried to book a ticket from YYZ to Shanghai through the above link, I chose a flexible date option instaed of fix date, trying to get the best price. However the best I got is $744 (before fuel charge and tax, etc), while it says $669 from the above link. Why?

Feel free to take Westjet to get to Tokyo.

Not that I disagree with your sentiment, but AC/Westjet are vastly different companies, both in customer support and overal purpose/function....Many airlines right now are pretty darn stingy when it comes to money, once it's theirs, they are happy to keep it.

1) When someone writes that a fare is "all in" that means that all taxes are included. The prices on airline websites are generally not all-in and do not include the fuel surcharge, airport improvement fees and other taxes and fees.

2) The price of $669 is for days when there is availability in the lowest priced fare bucket. Most likely one of your legs does not have availability in the lowest fare bucket so that is why it is being bumped up.

You can use www.seatcounter.com to check which buckets have availability. For flights to Tokyo from Ottawa the S bucket is the one with the lowest fares I don't know if this is the same for all destinations.

even tho i am not travelling with air canada, today i booked a flight with JAL (japan airline) to fly from vancouver to tokyo and then switch flights to fly into china (guangzhou), my ticket price was 780$!

yesterday when i called, travel agents were still quoting me around 1150$. only difference is, i was going to fly vancouver to hong kong, then hong kong to guangzhou on CX.

LUCKY ME! but dang, this fuel surcharge reduction really saved me 400$! =D

how is it false advertising? everyone knows it's "selected" dates. call them and find out which dates to manila are for 1088$.

aircanada for example, probably isn't going to fly you on the wkend and have you return on the wkend during peak summer season for say, the $578 to tokyo. so make your adjustment and choose a wkday for example.

aircanada is in the business of making money, and flying you half way around the world for under $1000 is cheap enough.

You're absolutely right. I didn't see this awhile ago contained within the fine print. I just didn't know that it called for doubling of the airfare.

In Tokyo all the tourist spots and public transit have English signs. Restaurants however, don't. A lot of people don't understand English. I got by fine in Tokyo without knowing a word of Japanese and just pointed at things if I needed to.

Has anyone tried to book a multi-city flight? i.e.

YYZ --> NRT --> HKG --> YYZ

I know of course it's going to be more expensive, but the YYZ --> NRT and HKG --> YYZ should have the discount, right?

I tried booking it online, it shows the different flights you can pick, but once I click continue, it says the flight cannot be found. I tried other dates too.

Also tried giving AC a call, but was on hold for 10 minutes so I hung up.

Anyone else having the same experience?

Booked yesterday for <$900 all in YYC -> NRT, which seemed pretty reasonable.

interested in this answer as well. I might go to a travel agent this weekend to see if they can get me an answer.

i think the problem you're having is, does AC even fly a NRT - HKG route? .. you can book one ways however for the long hauls and im assuming you'll have to find another airline for the short haul

You must mean Engrish signage

If you are in central Tokyo, there generally are english signs, and most importantly, subways/trains will have english and will show stops in english. Once you get out of Tokyo, it's not the case anymore, so it would be easier if you can read chinese/kanji.

The universal foreigner language is the point :cheesygri

Booked 8 tickets to Japan 3 months ago, departing on Apr 26. Back then I was charged for $4xx each for fuel surcharge. Now the surcharge had dropped to $84, I'm overcharged for close to $400 per ticket, which comes to about $3000 for 8 tickets altogether!!

I called AC last night, was told that they "do not have a policy on refunding fuel surcharge".

Should I try talking to a supervisor to see if a better decision can be made? Even if they could upgrade us to business or executive class, that would be better than "losing" $3000.

Anyone had experience dealing with AC??

They don't refund fuel surcharges. The best you can do is check to see if your ticket is refundable (minus the change/refund fee), and then compare it to today's ticket price. If the ticket minus fee is greater than today's price, then you can recover some of it back by cancelling and rebooking. But it might be tricky given that you have to find availability for 8 tickets.

I've asked my travel agent, she said the penalty to refund is $340, which is not much of a difference. But when I called AC, the CSR said the penalty is $200. Is my travel agent overcharging me, just to avoid the work to refund and repurchase??

Some travel agents charge more for cancellation to pay for their own time. It it usually stated on the original agreement/reciept. It is also negotiable so its something I negotiate when I buy a travel agent from a travel agency.

What do you mean by "even if they could upgrade" to biz/executive class? You actually think that they would upgrade 8 people for $3,000 total for a trans-pacific flight? The only reason why AC would upgrade you is if you bought a Latitude (+) fare and possess the required upgrade certificates. I mention only Latitude because the fare difference may be close to $400 per person vs a confirmed biz class ticket. Heck, $3,000 is not even enough for one passenger going one-way trans-pacific in business class. Have you even looked at how much a confirmed biz/executive class ticket is???

What if oil went from $100 to $300 per barrel? How would you feel if they ripped up your tickets and want to charge you $800 of fuel surcharge per ticket?

You bought the ticket and are bound by the T&C's of the ticket. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Has anyone tried to book a multi-city flight? i.e.

YYZ --> NRT --> HKG --> YYZ

I have the same question, but it's more like YVR > HKG > Osaka > HKG > YVR

I booked YVR > HKG with Air Canada a few months ago and got $893 total per ticket. My 4 days/3 nights + airfare from HKG to Osaka is something like $850. If I'm calculating the hotel rate to be $250, my YVR > HKG > OSAKA > HKG > YVR is technically costing me around $1400. Making my HKG > OSAKA flight roughly $600.

Could I have gotten a better price? Sigh. So sad now...

hey guys,
what are the perks for booking with a travel agency?

There are no perks except that they may sell these fares as a "consolidator's fare" which may be $10-$30 cheaper. However, all changes will have to be made through the agency (at least according to AC) which is not open 24/7.

Anyone have any idea how I can get from Narita Airport to Taipei, Taiwan for cheap?

It seems that I can save about $3,000 if my family flies to NRT instead of Taipei, which to me is a substantial amount of money.

I tried Eva Air and it costs Y120,000 for an adult and Y90,000 for a child to fly from Narita to Taipei. Heck, I'm willing to wait 12 hours at Narita if I can save a boat-load of cash :)
