Staples online at this time only carries it in BLUE.
Warning: Reports are Staples ships out the "C.B." English/French keyboard which has some extra keys and makes for slightly tighter ergonomics over the "U.S." English keyboard, possible deal breaker for some as you cannot choose the keyboard when ordering online. You can either buy in-store to ensure you get an English only keyboard but you will only be able to use 1 online coupon, if that. Or you can buy online and go to an actual store and it exchange for the U.S. keyboard model. It will tell you which keyboard on the side of the box THE MODEL NO. WILL END IN US OR CB (CDN BILINGUAL). If you are doing the exchange, do not open your online package or you will have to wait 24h for the in-store tech to inspect it before you can switch them.
Some people have been lucky and have received the U.S. keyboard, some people don't care.
It's not about politics, it's been noted even French Canadians prefer the better laid out U.S. keyboard.

1) The box is smaller. If you sit the two on a table, the english-only version is about a cm shorter than the bilingual one.

2) On the sticker on the side of the box the english only version says:

the bilingual version says:

The 1000HE is a great value 10" netbook, notably... upgradable RAM, wireless N, 6cell battery life, bluetooth, matte screen.

If you see the 1000HE cheaper at a valid store, sometimes it's better to pricematch at reputable NCIX or Compu2000 who only carry the U.S. keyboard, where depending on your home province, you pay no GST. Likewise, PC stores like CanadaComputers, PCVonline, etc only carry the U.S. keyboard.
Shop around, factor possibly reduced taxes, shipping, etc. before buying from Staples+coupons.

Actually picked one up about a week and half ago from Premier Computer down on lakeshore in etobicoke. Was going for $445 and I was out the door for about $502ish I think.

Nice machine. Upgraded to 2GB ram and running Windows 7. Don't expect miracles from the Atom though. Runs Office well and even handles Aptana and other apps.

6cell battery and wireless n will cost over $100 if you upgrade yourself, say for instance if you bought a Lenovo S10. All you need to do to the 1000HE is get a $20 2GB RAM stick and switch it out and it's probably the best bang 10" netbook.

so i popped my ram from my MSI wind into it (DDR 667) and have it humming along nicely at 1.837 Ghz. faster Ram should get me up to 2GHZ easy

The EEE is thicker than the new Acer 10.1". I also bought the new Acer 10.1" from Costco. I am returning the Acer and keeping this Asus.

it's almost a guaranteed fail if you try stacking online and your coupons all have same 1st 5 digits

instore,... depends. my impression is it should be relatively easier b/c the 16-digit codes are all unique
way back before stooples online became strict on using multiple coupons, many RFDers were successful using multiple coupons instore as long as they were unique

Realistically the battery will give you 7-8 hours of battery life with or without those additions. The manufacture's listed lifespan is always a bit overstated... it's probably their optimal run-time in the perfect settings.

It's only a number until you start having to carry it around with you all day. Then, you will notice the difference in size/weight perhaps. I used to carry around an Acer 14.1" with adapter, and compared to the 1000H with 8 cell battery now, it's a huge difference. 3lb less on my back is noticeable.

I don't miss not having an optical. I can't remember the last time I needed to use one when I wasn't at home.

It isn't really a power issue. Since I am relocating from my main residence for school and will have a PC, I had second thoughts before pressing the purchase button.

The power doesn't concern me as much but I think the 1000he is exactly halfway between the two.

How do you find not having a cd drive?

it really depends on your needs.

honestly speaking, IME i've rarely ever used the cd/dvd optical drive for the laptops that come w/ 1... maybe burnt a cd/dvd and that's it.
for me, most of the cd/dvd burning is done on desktop at home.

chances are, you might find yourself in same situation... if you need to burn sth, it's prbly gonna be at home

I used to carry around an Acer 14.1" with adapter, and compared to the 1000H with 8 cell battery now, it's a huge difference. 3lb less on my back is noticeable.

I use a backpack to carry my laptop around in, and with all the other stuff (lunch, books, etc), it got to be pretty heavy. Funny as it sounds, I work out 5 days/week, so my body is usually sore around the shoulders/neck and it's a pain to carry stuff :lol: I thought working out was supposed to help :lol:

In my Corolla, the seatbelt alert for the passenger seat will go off if I put my backpack in the seat, even with the netbook and not the laptop. No idea what the sensitivity is for that seat but it should give an idea of how much I end up carrying on a daily basis. :cheesygri

You're right, and the other main thing is that the enter key is now like an inverted L shape, it's not as wide and it's 2 rows tall. At least, it was this way when I received a 1000HA that was bilingual I believe that made the upper row keys a bit smaller.

The ram I would say doesnt significantly change the power draw. Now the 7200RPM vs 5400 RPM probably would suck more power... that being said the largest lose from the 9.5 rated hours would be YOU using it in a manor that wasn't the test setup, hence making it realistically maybe 7 hours tops.

Their return and exchange policy is pretty good IMO, providing you follow the correct number of days that it can be returned. I think it's 14 days, not sure. When I purchased a netbook from them and noticed it was the French keyboard, took it back for exchange. They checked all the ones in stock and all were French, so they gave me my money back.

I think it's more of a move on the manufacturer's (or retailer's) part to satisfy "both" English and French people. However, instead of making both groups happy, they piss each of them off. Reading through various forums, there are French people who even hate the Bilingual version of keyboards and want the English-only versions. I think in the past, Staples typically carried both English and French versions of laptops, but the French versions would always collect dust and they would be forced to sell them at huge discount prices to recover some costs - since they wouldn't sell at the same rate.

Since Memory Express (and NCIX?) carry the full-English version, I know it's available to Canada. If large chains like Staples didn't want them, I don't think Acer, Asus, MSI, etc would actually manufacturer bilingual keyboards.

Just came from returning my 1000HE to store. Took about 20 minutes to check the package and fill out some form, no other issues though as I'd never even turned it on. Just didn't like the keyboard.

Just came from returning my 1000HE to store. Took about 20 minutes to check the package and fill out some form, no other issues though as I'd never even turned it on. Just didn't like the keyboard.

Too bad, I liked it otherwise just couldn't hit the enter or shift keys. And the ugly turquoise writing on the keys was unbearable and ruined the look.

This has nothing to do with Asus, they produce both English and French keyboard. It's only Staples decided to order mostly French keyboard to sell in Canada.

I just picked mine up on Monday using a $20off coupon. If you talk to the manager, they will honour online coupons but not stackable.

In St. Albert (one of Edmonton, AB's side communities) they only have /CBs ... I tried calling the ordering number, but there was nothing they could do.

I guess the only other thing I can do is calling each of the stores in Edmonton trying to locate one.

Stacking coupons is not strictly limited to online purchases. If you get the right CSR, and are friendly, chances are you can come to an arrangement.

Also, buying online does not guarantee the bilingual version. Many have reported successful purchase of the english-only keyboard, but admittedly, this is rare. Unfortunately, I purchased in-store, and still got the bilingual version. So mileage may vary.

As for the 1000HE itself. I can't recommend it enough. Bluetooth headset, 9.5 hrs battery (5-8 actual) + yearly Skype account + globalSat BU-353 GPS = traveller's delight.

The GPS you're referring to.... I don't see it in any built in specs. Is that it comes with it... or just that you could add it on a USB port? I note the U.S. version of the Sony P does have it built in... while the International version doesn't.

The 2GB RAM upgrade was no problem. I contemplated W7 but no coreAVC and MPC support - the key to playing 720p flawlessly. The first thing I did was get rid of those equally large partitions. I shrank the OS partition and left a few gigs for program files; not sure why they ship all of them out like that. Regardless, I have a 320GB 2.5 WD external I might Acronis and switch out the drive.

its pretty well like any other notebook, not very tweakable. has built in overclock function. ram is installed by removing covers on the bottom, as is the HDD as well. manual has all the touchpad instructions and gestures outlined.

no built in camera software except for skype.

The cheapest I've seen is when FS had that F&F event and people were pm'ing BB for $7 Kingston sodimm. The last hot deal was memoryhouse for around $14 inc shipping but quantities were limited in that 3h window and it was a no-name brand.
I would say hot around $15, warm low $20's. Reg price around $30 at the independents. Rip off at BB, FS reg prices.

To most netbook users optical drive isn't a big issue. Optical media is going the way of the floppy. I only burn dvds nowadays to watch on the big screen or for backups.

I don't know about optical devices being included in next gen netbooks, but even if they are, prepare to pay quite a bit of premium for them. IMO optical drives aren't well suited for netbooks, since power consumption is one of the biggest targets for a netbook. Anything mechanical should be avoided, ie. the motor in an optical drive.

Netbooks are not recommended as primary machines however I am sure many people have them as their only computer. It also raises a dilemma for people who have a lot of media on CDs and DVDs and perhaps are not comfortable using the software or want to take the time to back up their large collections to a drive. The downside of an optical drive is energy consumption reducing your note/netbook's battery time. Another being products that ship with an installation or help disc. The increased availability of the same online versions has helped. It really boils down to a personal decision in having one in your portable device.

To answer your question about recovery. I highly recommend Acronis True Image Home 2009. I have used it to clone larger drives to exchange in our machines. Our 1000HE now has a 320GB HDD and it took twenty minutes including physically swapping the drives. And I have also used the program to make backups which in fact I used last week to fully restore a Dell that crashed and was unable to find the operating system in the recovery partition. Anyways this is how you boot off a thumb drive:

You can install Windows 7 from a thumb drive but it isn't for the faint of heart (bootable thumb drive).

I have an external case with usb/firewire connection so i just connected a spare dvd rom and installed windows 7.

I'm not sure if this might work, but if you have another computer with an optical drive, can you try a network share and have the netbook access the windows 7 install? I've done it before when installing other programs, but i've never tried it when installing an OS.

If the installation copies all the files to the local hard drive it could work, that might be easier.

Or, rip the disk image and use Daemon Tools.
You could also use an IDE/SATA to USB enclosure or an IDE/SATA to USB adaptor. The latter costs like $20 if you already have a desktop optical drive. DVD-ROMs can be found for as low as $5 if you're fortunate. I got mine that price at the compusmart closing (Torment In Hell compusmart you've earned it! :evil: ).

So not only it's not sure which keyboard we'll receive, we're not guaranteed which colour the netbook will be? I thought it had to be blue.
I've been tasked to buy a netbok for my siter-in-law and beleive it or not, the colour is one of the top features she wants!
I guess I can always replace it in-store if I receive one with a colour she doesn't like...

Possible but unlikely, especially if the box is opened. Also, even with a receipt they are supposed to enter the serial #, which won't match if you try and do a buy a black one and return with a blue one - upc will be different as well.

Staples has always been blue. There is no indication they will carry black anytime soon.

Well, staples put my order on hold, surprise, surprise. They didn't like the use of my 2x50 off coupons. According to staples, the first 5 digits are the actual coupon #, with the rest of the digits for the security code. Anyhow, I had a 30 off coupon, so called them and they were able to use the 50+30 coupons. Oh well, still a good deal.

I think stacking coupons is the best idea if you want it now. I purchased mine yesterday which totalled $431.78 all in. I used a $50 off $200 coupon and $20 off $150. I also bought the emachines laptop 14.1" for $409 all in (regular is $432 plus tax or something) for my Uncle using coupons as well. However I might return the eeepc if it has the bilingual keyboard. Who knows? I am receiving it tomorrow. Hopefully it's U.S. keyboard to save my the time of returning or exchanging it=)

I don't understand why stooples keeps sending random keyboards to customers. I called the online phone number they provided on the site and the lady said that she doesn't know if they keyboards are bilingual or not. I am still hoping to receive the US version (I'll know tomorrow). I called about 10 stooples in the Markham/Toronto area and they were bilingual or they were unsure. I'm still doing more research and I contacted Stooples regarding the display picture of the product; it shows a US keyboard. I guess it's sort of false advertising. I'll see what they say when they reply.

There is no way a company would risk giving a virus or spyware to a new owner.

I would think the HD would be completely wiped and re-written with a premade image of a default install.

It is a possibility as a thread in Shopping Discussion was about an RFD member finding explicit pictures (LOL) and data from the previous notebook owner. I may be wrong, but I vaguely remember it was a returned Staples unit.

Same here.. I ordered one a few weeks ago, but was the garbage Bilingual keyboard - half the left shift key, and enter key is ghetto. Ordered another a few days ago, and it was delivered as the US version. Now to attempt and return the Bilingual version.

I just found out the difference between US and Bilingual keyboard is not indicated on the box. It's actually the difference in size, the smaller of the two boxes will be the US keyboard, just a little heads up.

I found out earlier today when I was able to stack coupons in-store, with the help of my goods looks and charming personality, I was able to seduce the female salesperson and she happily accepted all three coupons, just remember you need hard copies of the coupon codes.

Basically it's the same as the standard kbd, but with "\" placed where the bottom-left part of the enter key would be, and with bilingual markings on several keys. That's how it is on my Compaq laptop anyway. It shouldn't really affect your typing as moch as the reduced size of the netbook kbd in general would. You can always plug in a standard USB kbd when at a desk though.

As for the French characters, I believe they are usually activated by the language selection in Windows' Control Panel regional settings.

just tried this out and made the netbook really really slow!! i don't think this is made for netbooks since netbooks don't run as fast as a normal laptop. There were some add-ons even after i uninstalled this program..so i just sytem restored it. I think this is the reason why they didn't put vista on the eee pc 1000he. i still prefer xp=)

I have 3 ACER Travelmate 7720s - 2 bilingual, one not.

I don't find it to be a big deal, but I'm not a touch typist - I hunt & peck, single finger.

Aesthetically, I'm not a fan of the extra markings on some keys, but I think it's more a case of YMMV than a clearcut plus or minus.

(I have a b/l 1000HE as well, BTW, as well as a few other computers with Engl k/bs.)

For me, it definitely is not a "huge difference" (viva la difference! :twisted:

I got this Friday ... Still playing with it. Stacked a $50 (got in my email), with a $20 and a $5...

Goods
- Supposedly AWESOME battery life (yet to test it)
- one-button swap to 800x600, 1024x600 (native), 1024x768, 1024x768 (Compressed)
- Not sure what the VGA out supports, but should support high resolutions.
- Came with a neoprene-ish pouch

Bads (knew some of these before buying, some not)
- Hate the bezel size around the LCD, they may have been able to shove a larger LCD in.
- Weight is on the hefty side...
- KB keys are rather spaced out, good and bad...
- Hate the touch pad keys, takes too much effort to click
- They removed the 'slide on the right-side of touch pad to scroll' ... and installed their own app...
- There's no LED to light up the kb (back-lit kb would be awesome, but I'll take the single LED at the top of the LCD, like my Lenovo)
- Atom CPUs aren't dual core... oh well.
- Webcam is ok @ 1.3MP, it's kinda backwards?

Depending on location and the CSR, an RFDer in this thread states he could stack 3 coupons in-store. After signing up, it may take a week or two to get your first coupon and they don't usually send you multiple coupons for stacking, so just get coupons from generous RFDers in the Staples coupon thread so you can try to buy it sooner at a retail location. Worth a try, good luck

I don't remember if mine did that as I switched it out and put in a 320GB WD Scorpio. BTW, anyone thinking of swapping out for a larger drive, the performance gains of a 7200rpm will be minimal, you will hear more pinging and more energy will be used.

Awesome battery, 6+ hours in real life use. As for processing speed, it's a netbook intended for surfing, email, office tools, etc, nothing too crazy. However, it will play 720p mkv's no problem. My wife does it wirelessly off our HTPC, so the 802.11n is definitely an advantage. Another nice feature is the bluetooth, syncing with her phone and camera. One of the few downsides is the 6cell battery makes it heavy for a netbook.

hrmmm.. a sales person told me that Kingston was good so I bought a Kingston one at Canada Computers which totaled $36.15 tax included (cash price). If you just want a cheap 2GB memory then buy it at NCIX. However you have to pay for shipping unless you buy a $20 gift card. There's no sale right now for memory so you can wait if you are not desperate.

2) On the sticker on the side of the box the english only version says:

Not sure which netbook this is but this is what it looks like. You actually might find it useful if you type a lot of French. But for most touch typists used to a US keyboard, it's quite a big change...

Tripple Booting on the 1000HE with OSx86 10.5.6, Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix and WinXP...

The hardest to install was OSx86, but everything except WIFI works perfectly. Hope there will be a WIFI driver for AW-NE771, or will have to open it up to replace the card...

I couldn't get the JabraBT codes to work, it acted like it wouldn't allow you to stack them. I don't think it's a terribly amazing headset but free is free :-)

Let's assume the YouTube HD is the 720p which is 1280x720 and the eee pc's screen is at 1024 x 600. You won't even get the full advantage of HD unless you are connecting it to a monitor. Unfortunately, the N280 is not powerful enough to process H264 and mkv.

I was able to swap my bilingual for a us version in store today. Only worked for me after I called the 1800 number and they actually called the store location and set it up for me. I actually tried to exchange at the same store earlier but they wouldn't honour the coupons.

I don't think you should go overseas..there's the H1N1 virus and no one is travelling!! stick with the netbook.. it runs perfectly fine~ Just go exchange it. It's worth the money!! Upgrade to a 2GB RAM and it runs faster than regular netbooks. Battery life is great and very light.

Just picked one up. It has the CB keyboard. There really isn't much difference between both keyboards. I actally prefer the CB keyboard. The enter key is larger.

I just bought my 1000HE from PC Village (Markham) yesterday. They currently have it on sale for $419. Black with a US keyboard.

I had a few hours to play with it and it is pretty much what I expected. My only gripe so far is the speakers are too weak. I've read they were weak, but I didn't think it would be this bad. In the taskbar I pushed the RealTek equalizers to max, I set volume to max in the media player, and I set the hardware volume to max using the netbook FN volume up. I could barely hear the speakers with my tv on in the background. I think this could've been fixed if they had the speakers aiming towards the user, instead of placing the speakers on the bottom of the unit facing down.

As for the USB ports, are all of the ports powered? I was thinking of buying an external DVD drive. Some use AC power and some use a second USB port for 5V power. Is it bad to draw a full 5V off one of the 1000HE ports?

I don't see why someone would buy a netbook and then purchase an external DVD drive. You end up carrying two pieces around. You should've gotten a laptop if you're intention is to use a DVD drive!

Its easier to install the O/S or software with an external drive if you already have it on the media. Also you wouldnt lug it with you everywhere, only when you need to install something.

Get a netbook sleeve, gloss shell scratches easy (too bad that artscow thread expired yesterday, design your own for $10).
Performance wise... Linux>XP>Windows7>Vista. If you don't want to spend hours tweaking with a Linux distro, keep XP, remove unnecessary software and startup programs.
Small little icon on the bottom left, disable bluetooth and camera if you're not using it, battery will last longer. Also that little S.H.E. icon, set it to auto or power save, it only needs to be on the highest setting if you're playing 720p HD.

Other tweaks:
1. The 1000HE is shipped out with two large partitions (???). Use freeware Easus Partition Manager and shrink your OS partition to around 12GB, making your storage partition 120GB or whatever it works out to. http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

2. Maximize screen real estate by cleaning up Firefox: Install addon "Tiny Menu" https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1455. Second, right click the tool bar and hit "customize" you can shuffle anything anywhere. There are probably 3 or 4 toolbars checked. Keep what icons/search spaces you want to use, group them together in one toolbar, and uncheck/remove the unnecessary toolbars... now you have a google chrome-like browser and still be able to install all those neat firefox addons not available in chrome.

3. With 2GB RAM I notice no difference in performance doing this. Find a copy of TuneUpUtilities and you can make XP look like Windows 7 without a memory hogging transformation pack like WindowsX Seven Transformation pack. Using TuneUpUtilities, you can change the boot screen, login screen, icons, have a windows 7 glass theme applied, etc, in simple steps... keeping the speed of XP (I'm not sure how people are obtaining Windows 7 (torrent) but the pro reviews say it's slower than XP. It requires a clean install, you can't upgrade from XP to W7, wiping out your ASUS software, alternately you can virtual install with VMware but any version regardless is going to stop working in August anyway, that's why I kept XP and just skinned it:

4. Use Acronis True Image before you do anything and make a backup. Then when you have your 1000HE tweaked the way you want, make a second backup. Store these backups on a external drive. Now if at anytime anything crashes, even beyond recovery, you can restore it to exactly the way it was using either backup. ATI can also be used to clone your drive when you want to upgrade your 1000HE to a larger one (took me 1/2h including cloning time and physical remove/install of the new 320GB drive).

I had the exact same problem. My adapter got really hot and made a "sizzling" sound whenever the 1000HE was turned on. It was fine if the netbook was powered off.

The Asus support person knew of this problem and sent me out a replacement.

The replacement say "version 2A" and merely gets warm regardless whether the netbook is on or off.

No it did not. I did notice the model number was different too.

I've since thrown out the defective unit as the Asus person told me they didn't want it back.

I didn't want to risk using it by mistake since something was clearly wrong with it. It got so hot you could barely touch it.

The auto-shutoffs' been noted on both the eeeuser.com and asus.com forums. The adapter is designed to shut itself off if it gets too hot. That's what is suppose to happen when they overheat. In many cases the thermal shut-off does not work (like the unit I had) and could be a fire hazard.

The fact that the Asus support person knew of the adapter overheating tells me they're just quietly replacing them - until someone's house burns down or a child scalds themself.

Because to save you the trouble, I went hunting around the seedier side of Hong Kong websites, picking up as many infections as I could find in a 30 minute surfing session, and then seeing how today’s anti-malware software coped, and without a doubt SuperAntiSpyware was the best.

During my surfing session I managed to acquire nearly 200 nasties, and SuperAntiSpyware found 176 of them. Compared with the second best performer, this was an amazingly high figure, but not quite perfect. However, there are more plusses here. Installation was quick and painless, with scanning time at the default settings impressively quick, and the cleanup process effective. However, it was when I cleaned up that the only fly in the ointment appeared. Whilst SAS did clean every infection it found, on the first attempt it left some behind. A second scan and clean cured this.

The final cleanup was done with a full scan, rather than the quick/smart scan used for testing the software reviewed here, though this took three times as long to detect a single additional threat. Nevertheless, nothing else even came close to the detection rate of SAS.

The runner up in my test was MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, which detected 104 threats, though the time taken to detect them was a little longer than SAS. Having said that, scanning again after I let SAS clean up my system, Malwarebyte’s offering still found an additional 28 threats that SAS had failed to detect. Most of these were Trojans, which suggests the two are aimed at slightly different threats. Anti-malware happily removed these with no troubles at all.

One catches what the other misses. I'm going to install Superantispyware on it today and see if there are any performance issues having both. I don't expect my wife surfing seedy HongKong websites on her 1000HE, but who knows LOL. BTW, the two beat out Ad-Aware, A-Squared, Spybot, Spyware Terminator. :)

Here's what I did. From the Asus forums I've read, it really depends on the CSR you get. I called the Asus support number in Canada (posted on the Asus Canada website). They're located in Markham Ontario. The first person I spoke to wanted my serial number then asked me to return the adapter to the store since I had just purchased the unit and it would be the quickest way. I stopped by a local Staples (I didn't buy the unit there) and the clerk wanted me to go to the store where I purchased the unit to get a swap out. Since it was the weekend, I called the ASUS (24/7) support number back so save myself driving across town. The person I spoke with simply took down my address and shipped me a replacement. It was in my hands a few days later. I wasn't asked to return the old unit nor was I given a case number. He did ask me to register the unit with him so I provided him the date of purchase, retailer, my unit's Serial Number and other information for their records.

I've read a the Asus forums that some folks were asked to return their unit so YMMV.

First time they've heard of the problem? Have them to a Google search. I found some forums that mentions this issue.

You know you have a problematic one if: you CAN'T hold on to the unit when charging a 1000HE that is turned on. My faulty adapter made a "sizzling" sound which clearly was not normal.

Well, I just checked the adaptor with the HE charging... and although it does get pretty warm (hotter than if it were just plugged in), I wouldn't call it scalding hot... I can hold it without any problems and I don't hear any sort of sizzling noise, so I guess it's alright.

What I find a little concerning is the bottom of the 1000HE itself. Is it normal for it to get pretty hot? It's much hotter than how hot my 900 used to get... maybe I need to run some temperature tests. Note that everywhere else in the notebook is cool as a cucumber, it's just the bottom that get very very hot (no way I'd be able to use it just on my lap... would need some sort of padding. And I use it with a laptop mat btw).

As for a linux distro, there is a chart somewhere that tells you what works and what doesn't on the 1000HE. AFAIK, there is no version that covers all functions out of the box. It's a nice project if you already dabble in it but not so fun if you're a regular windows user.

The sleeve that comes with the 1000he is better than i expected. It'll save the netbook from scratches but it won't absorb bumps very well.

I'll probably end up purchasing a thicker sleeve, but it's not a priority.

OP here, if you don't want to play with coupons, you're best bet is to print out a 1000HE on sale elsewhere, call your area Staples to see who has stock. In the store check that it is a U.S. keyboard, then pull out your form for a pricematch. If you can fanangle and slip in a online coupon in-store while you're at it, even better. Many still do. It was the introduction of Vista that created the need for more. But at least that brought memory costs down so far that it now makes sense to have more than you actually need, especially if it boosts performance.

Runs perfectly fine out of the box without extra ram.
For email, surfing, using microsoft office, it's amazing. Fast, responsive, light, excellent keyboard, incredible battery life, sharp screen. As long as your expectations are real, you should be very happy with this thing.

Buy one of the older 8GB models. I believe they come with SSD drives, possibly making replacement simple, and they are cheaper.

I returned it right then and there because the man I was talking to was either being deceptive (trying to convince me that not only could I not get what I wanted at his store, I couldn't legally get it anywhere) or was just too ignorant for me to want to have any technology dealings with. Either way, I was out of there right quick.

Got it from Compu2000 in BC instead. The free shipping takes a lot longer, but they didn't end up charging me PST since I was out of province from them, and it was cheaper over all than using a single $20-off coupon from Staples. $467.24 after tax and everything. More expensive than if you manage to get the cheapest price quoted from OP ($370 + GST + Ontario PST = $418.10), but for that you need to be able to collect sufficient stackable coupons, not have them rejected, and happen to be able to get whichever keyboard you want.

The sales associate at the customer service desk at Staples had an interesting theory on why Staples stocks CB keyboards only for their laptops and netbooks. He thought it was because they were able to get a volume discount, and it was the cheaper option for making CB keyboards available (rather than buying smaller orders of both US and CB style). Obviously not a country-wide policy, though, if some people are able to exchange. Who knows?

You will need SODIMM laptop ram. Any 2 Gig, 667MHz. or 800MHz. stick will work.

I opted for a 2 Gig OCZ 800 MHz. stick since I might dabble in overclocking.

I received mine and it was bilingual. Went to a few local staples, finally found a US keyboard and bought that. Returned the bilingual one with the in store receipt. My receipt did not have a serial on it, only the model of the computer. Upgraded the ram, now just waiting on a broadcom wireless card to see what this thing can really do! :)

Yes, it is no different than buying a product on sale and exchanging/returning it when the product is back to regular price, as long as it is within the allotted time frame.

Well it is harder to use $130 worth of coupon on a $400 item.. which is why I placed my order on the phone.. to make sure that my order is processed immediately... I think it is easier for Staples to deny pricematch or use of coupons through online order, it would give them time to think about how reject our valid coupons..

Well you can wait for windows 7 if you are that strongly against Windows XP.. A lot of people put hackintosh on these asus machine.. I personally dont think Vista is a good idea on these netbook.. it is under-powered :lol:

We just ordered some stuff that was supposed to be around $80 (granted, G&T inflates the price, so figure about $60 regular retail), and the bill came out to something like $42.

I certainly expect all netbooks to come with Win7 in Oct. Supposedly bad Vista performance on netbooks is a major reason they're rushing out Win7.

Is is worth the wait? If you really need a computer now, definitely not, and if you don't then definitely. :) Aftter all it's not like you'll be able to do anything on win7 you can't do on XP. It will just have a few more useless features that don't work properly/you'll never use anyway. Early reports are that it's v. solid tho...

Thanks I found one at the McCowan and Nugget location. The guy on the phone was really helpful and put it aside for me but geeez...when I went into the store the rep and the manager were confrontational right off the bat and looked at me like I was some common criminal. The first thing out of their mouths was nonsense that I would lose my coupon and they wouldn't be able to take it - which doesn't make sense since all I asked for was a straight exchange. Thanksfully there was another guy there who had a cooler head and went to the back and found the US model that the other tech put on hold for me. He told the manager that since it is the same SKU there is no reason to even worry about the coupons...lol, I think he should have been the manager!

Just one piece of advice for those who are going to exchange - make sure you don't open your unit as this will delay the exchange for 24 hours since they will need their "tech" to inspect and approve that all is in order before accepting the return/exchange.

Ok I ordered it, stacked 2 coupons on it, got $50 off. They shipping out the wrong netbook! The ASUS 901 arrived today, but I went to the store an exchanged it for the 1000HE.

The 1000HE is fantastic in every way, I think its a great netbook, however the fan seems a bit loud. I think i might have a defective fan????

I got a CB keyboard shipped, so I called customer service (the 1 800 number on the invoice) and she told me to call the my local stores (3 of them in victoria). Once guy said "he knew his stock" and knew that he didn't have any, one guy looked at the side of one box and assumed all the others were the same, and the other guy actually said a customer took the last US one yesterday. So i called support again, and the lady talked to her staples helpline and came back saying that staples doesn't carry any 1000HE that isn't bilingual lol.
So i then told her that I know for a fact that people have either gotten US shipped, or have exchanged it in store, and even told her that the side of the box has a CB or US, depending on which one it is.

Anyways, she told me to find out the manufacturer ID number, or the item number, of a US keyboard one, so she can put that in her computer and track one down. I'm assuming the CB or the US will have the same 6 digit item number (mine is 787838) but maybe not.

Can someone who has the US keyboard give me the P/N number from the side of their box? Or if anyone knows a distinguished number between the CB and the US keyboard? thanks!

I flew from Florida to Nevada and back (12hour trip one way with plane switching, 24 hours in total) watched movies and used autocad the entire time, I did not experience any hard disk problems with my 1000he

I suppose you would have to set it at full power on the 1000HE hybrid engine (it's on the taskbar) which reduces battery time. I have to do that for flawless 720p playback. You might get more accurate answers on the forum there :)

Other tweaks:
1. The 1000HE is shipped out with two large partitions (???). Use freeware Easus Partition Manager and shrink your OS partition to around 12GB, making your storage partition 120GB or whatever it works out to. http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Yeah I tried touch-typing on a keyboard like that one (belonging to a french friend). It drove me nuts because of that shift key and because of the enter key. I kept hitting the "\" key every time I tried to hit enter.

I suppose you'd get used to it after awhile but it drove me absolutely insane in the short time I was using it.

:confused: works for me with Firefox so it might be your browser, and that is an excellent blowup of the CB keyboard, deal breaker if you're a conventional typist and use other regular keyboards during the week. Even with the US keyboard, I still miss the right shift key sometimes. If only the Samsung NC10 was this cheap.

The Atom processor actually surprised me with how much power it actually has. It seems comparable with desktop CPUs of 2-3 years ago. More than adequate for most uses. Possibly even enough for Sims 3 if it wasn't for graphics card limitations. Eventually somebody will probably produce a gaming-oriented netbook though, with decent graphics, and Sims 3 will probably run fine then - perhaps even with an Atom driving it!:)

Yeah, I got the 8.9in Acer, but it just had too many limitations for me. There are lots of options out there so I decided to keep looking. I haven't field tested it yet, but the PSP's browser might be all I need for now, especially since I have a laptop for serious mobile work. I didn't even realise the PSP had a browser a month ago!:)

That's a really wasteful practice. BD should take note of what's happening and either sell one version or the other, or assign distinct SKUs to each so that people can order the version they want. So long as it's not OOS!

That would have the side benefit of letting the retailers know which version their customers really want, so hopefully they can take measures to meet the demand.

I'd never encourage people to return stuff over something as comparatively trivial as a b/l kbd (you can always plug in your favourite full-size when you're at a desk), but if the stores do receive a lot of returns, along with complaints about the kbd, it should result in them ordering the right model in future. Well its a given that this netbook sucks for gaming. The Asus one with HMDI costs $500+.... at that price point you might as well buy a laptop with a half decent video card. Blah....
I'm buying the netbook for portability primarily and HD video/gaming secondarily. A laptop with an optical drive is much too big to be portable enough, a 10" netbook can fit in one of my hands easy and take no space in a backpack so it makes it real easy to bike around with it, in fact some of my jackets have pockets big enough to hold it and possibly I could fit it in one of my jean back pockets, I can fit larger than a CD case in my jean back pockets.


The Atom processor is better than I'd expected, but I don't think it can be compared with gaming on a decent desktop. Or even a budget one for that matter.

I think nVidia 9300m is enough for the gaming I intend to do on it. I plan to play more movies on an external large LCD than games anyway but having a gaming quality card in a netbook gives me more room. I never intended to play the games on the built in LCD, I'll plug the netbook to an external LCD via HDMI, I currently have a 20" I use with my 5 desktops. My games are much older 3D games, all the ones I currently have will be just fine on the Asus N10J, C&C Generals, C&C3, PoP2, FEAR, PREY. I'm sure WoW will play fine too as I've seen it playing on a P4 2.8GHz laptop using nVidia 8600 series.

I don't know about you guys but I tend to be able to get games to run on way outdated video cards. I was hoping to see a Netbook with 9400m somewhere but I can't find any new netbook models with a gaming quality graphic chip. Asus N10J seems to be the last one designed.

You're lucky, that's how it should be. Around here you can have somebody sitting around all day waiting, phone BD at 6PM to ask if the delivery truck is still coming, and still not get a useful answer. It's especially frustrating for those of us further out from the warehouse and more likely to get skipped when the driver decides it's time to call it a day. Fair enough, he can't stay out forever, but have somebody in the office make phone calls to let the remaining customers know!

are you sure is the SAME 1000he model and not something else? I have see black & white asus eee pc too but not the same model; if they are oos you can calll them online and they will tell you when is the next batch coming in;

Perhaps you should take a drive down to a Buffalo Staples to see if they have a US kbd model in your desired colour available there. Or give them a phone call first. It sounds like there's at least a 95% chance you'll get a blue b/l model here in Canada.

Yes you might be right that atom cpu is supposed to be more advanced than a Pentium4-M. I was told it's like a single core P4 with hyper-threading but I can't remember if it's 32bit or 64bit cpu. It's more advanced than generation one P4 and more than Pentium4-M. Still the games I intend to run on it will do fine with that cpu.

Thanks for the tip on vid card performance it's very helpful. Still 9300m must be a lot better than a Radeon 9600XT and I think all the games I have right now can run fine on that.

I kept the bilingual keyboard since I usually use the right shift and the messed up left shift doesn't bother me much. Your hands adjust to new keyboards much faster than you'd imagine. In just 10 minutes you'd be typing as fast as you'd do on a normal keyboard.

Oh yeah, I have problem with that too. However, I thought the US English keyboard also suffer from the same problem since I don't think the design for the enter key changed that much. I also have a little problem typing emoticons correctly, but I don't use them as much as I did a few years ago.

I've learned to adjust since my Compaq laptop (like most these days) has a b/l kbd. You need to adjust with a netbook anyway as the keys have to be smaller to fit.

A better solution for a netbook might be to create a kbd-less tablet with a "graffiti" are like that on Palm organisers. That would probably allow them to make the netbook smaller (or screen larger) too.

I had to return one in store. The tech took a quick look to make sure everything was in the box and that was it No point formatting because if they really want to see what is on the hard drive they still can, even after formatting (unless you zero it out, and even then...)

Just bring it back.

I returned a notebook once to Staples due to dead pixel on the screen. They did not even turn it on! Just looked to make sure the cables and cd's where there. Every store could be different.

-The French keyboard does not bother me at all. I had to look at the keys for the keys a couple of times but after that it's blind typing.
-Battery life was excellent! I had 9+ hours on startup!

-This machine has the worst trackpad known to man! Buttons were at an awkward angle and extremely hard to click. It doesn't help that the buttons were extremely stiff as well.

-The browsing was horrendously slow! I could load 10 pages on any other machine before it would finish 1 page on this. I don't know why.
-It is not a light machine. It's not that much lighter than my x200t and it also feels much thicker.
-Glossy bezel could be easy to scratch.
-It would list my wireless as being on an unsecured network when it's not.

9 hrs on startup is useless, under the asus specs, you have to turn off all wireless, BT, lowest lcd brightness in order to get full 9 hrs, and that 9 hr will drop to 8.5 after 10 minutes of usage; i would say u can do about 6.5 hrs of stuff in a full charge (i just did an format, install xp pro and windows updated and every software i need) without any power plugged in;

the french keyboard is not a biggy, just buy a US keyboard and swap it, is about $20-30.

as for the wireless, i noticed that my dir-615 do not like systems with sp3, everytime a computer has sp3 installed, i will have disconnects often, it will be connected to the router but internet connectivity will be very slow or nont; i will have to re-connect to the router again with the internal repair function; so that is why that made me decide to reinstall xp pro; after that i no issues with the internet;

for the buttons, i never used them, i only tab on the trackpad or use my BT mouse; and for loading websites; i have no issues but i did top up the ram to the max; my internet is a secured network, and it says secured network under windows configuration, so i don't know why your said the opposite;

isn't hybrid storage = 10GB? i think that is online according to the manual or asus website; under my eee, i have 3 partitions, 1x at 5GB for the factory image, 1x 75GB as C:\, 1x 75GB as D:\ and didn't see a 4th partition;

Okay thanks to everyone for the help. I installed Windows 7 on this and it pretty much worked out of the box with no driver installs. :cheesygri However I have too many laptops already and I'm not really used to the size of this machine as my eyes are pretty bad.
