Did anyone here pick up one of these things today?

I heard the Acekard doesn't work for American models and only works for the Japanese & European Models.

Any news about which card is going to work? How about the CycloDS card?

I picked mine up today. Haven't tried using any Card on it yet. I am enjoying the bigger screen, just want to get a nice case and screen protector for it.

nah not a stupid question, but you can not change it to ENGRISH (lol) it stays in japanese. Reason why I got it was b/c 1. I don't have a ds lite any more and 2. it was really cheap off ebay =P 3. region free

it was that much of a problem for me since one of my Japan friends translated all the menus for me :D

According to our fellow rfder lazychild, all the dsi cards works on the DSi, since he has picked up his pre-order today and tried out all the DSi cards.

I don't believe they are region free. DSi games will be region locked, and you can only access the Japanese marketplace.

My local Wal-Mart had a bunch on display today, there were alot of blue units which makes my wonder why Nintendo chose such an odd colour. Was able to play around with a demo unit

-matte top is nice
-weighs more than I thought it would compared to lite, possibly heavier
-the bigger screens are good
-dpad feels same but the buttons are less recessed and more clicky
-cameras no better than cell phone
-199 price point is not hot

so you're basically paying a premium for bigger screens + camera, it doesn't feel any smaller/lighter than the lite, ill probably stick with my lite until it breaks down before i upgrade

All R4DSi, AceKard2i and DSTTi confirmed working. Even with the latest updates from Nintendo.

However, CycloDS has yet made any announcement on their 'CycloDSi' card. We will keep everyone updated on these as well.

But for now, have fun!

One interesting thing, which I haven't heard anyone mention. Is that the DSi supports WPA network security. Sure, it's probably not that big of a deal for most, but it's an awesome upgrade for people using wireless for other devices and don't want to use the crap WEP. Also nice for WiFi browsing on the go!

WPA is a big deal. I wouldn't touch anything without WPA support.

Another good thing for buying Nintendo DSi early is that...
we can get the DSi shop channel for free if we log in before October 2009 or something like that.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Yup, you get the free points. The DSi shop channel should always be free.
That's how they'll try to sell you more stuff.

Had they improved the hardware in some way (making the LCD screen bigger but not increasing the resolution, adding 2 poor cameras and swapping the buttons around is NOT an upgrade to me), I would've bought a 3rd version of the DS.

I picked up the DSi and bought AK2i from lazychild. It's working flawlessly even after the system update that was performed last night.

System feels more solid than the DSL, doesn't feel like a toy anymore with the matte finish. However, it's also become more vulnerable to scratches at the same time, not to mention it'd be more noticeable if you have a scratch on the DSi than DSL.

I've played through 1 cycle of battery from a full charge. It lasted about 5-6 hours, which was about the same as my old DSL. So I don't see the big fuss about battery being lower capacity than DSL. But then again, they were probably comparing it by using Wi-Fi?

The new UI is superior and user friendly. Online shop is a very good add-on in addition. Let along with the new toy - camera, I just can't wait for more new games to come out that requires camera play. The free internet browser was wicked and the DL speed was just like many people mentioned in another post, much faster than the DSL one.

Anyways, these are just my personal opinions. To me, it's a great upgrade since my old DSL touch screen wasn't working properly. However, if my DSL was 100% functional, it might be a total different story.

Now off to download more roms to play. ^_^

Forgive me but with the obvious battery issues is there to really upgrade from a DSL? Not trying to start a flame war, i really want to know as i have no idea.

NM just read above. And you only go 5 hours on a DSL? i get way way more than that.

I agree, I get more than that on my DSL as well. There are advantages to the DSi, but a shorter battery life is a deal killer for me. The main reason for the DSL for me, is travel and play. The longer I get the better. A camera doesn't help me much.

Sorry I should've mentioned in my earlier post.

First of all, don't get me wrong, and I'm not putting down the DSL as I had one before as well.

According to MY personal experiences of playing on both DSL and DSi THUS far, I don't see ANY major differences in terms of battery capacity. But please keep one thing in mind, I did not do the comparison in a lab.

Now again, I'm satisfied based on my very personal standard. 5-6 hours may not be the exact number, but to me and the way how I play it, whatever the battery capacity DSi has VS DSL is not a concern because I cannot feel ANY differences.

Like RFD, how long does it load the forum page. Same with joystiq (esp when you drill down to the comments and kotaku. With the old browser, you can make a cup of coffee, come back and they'd still be loading.

New browser on DSi is way faster than the old one, no competition at all.

Opening the front page of RFD took me about 15 seconds.

User interface is very user friendly especially if you're used to Opera. You'll probably get familiar with it within the 5 minutes of usage even if you've never used it.

EDIT: There's also settings about the histories which I'm not sure if the old DSL has it... I didn't really use the browser on DSL because I was very impatient. :p

I love Opera. I still use that on my Nokia N770 internet tablet. Shame it was paid for so long, people ignored it and went firefox instead.

There is a video comparing the two. My understanding is the added RAM improves the experience quite a bit. May not be the best for browsing, but for quick checks or on the go; it'd be quite handy. (Especially given the new WPA security of the DSi)

if i get a JP/US dsi and use a r4dsi
will it work properly? and does it eliminate the region lock like the old dsl had?

I think your a bit confused

JP DSi has no region lock

US DSi has region lock even if you put the jp game on to your R4i it will not work for the new games that are going to be locked...

Hi Folks,

Virgin DSi owner here. Heck, I haven't had a gaming system since....evurrrrr.

Anyhoo., could someone give me the skinny here. Are games backwards compatible? What's the best way about this? Getting it modded, and playing games off've roms like other gaming systems?

What's the scoop? I sent a pm to lazychild, I'm sure I'll be on the right track shortly, but wanted to ask the general RFD DSi enthusiasts.

I'm waiting on my delivery of full body shields from PYD...Have become slightly addicted to these :D.

In the interim-would the hard-cases for the DS fit the DSi? I thought I read the DSi is a tad thinner?

when you mean backwards compatible you do you mean GBA games b/c they removed the slot from the dsi but if you were talking about ds games yeah they play ds games no problem at all

you don't really have to get it "modded" because that means actually opening the system and tinkering with it which you don't.

you just need to be a compatible DSi flash card to enable to play homebrew stuff roms etc...

I personally own a black DSi with a acerkard 2i which is working really well I use a hard plastic case to protect also I do recommend screen protectors on both screens

Anyone else get buyer's remorse (I got it $50 off at staples)?
I was expecting a bit more filters, effects etc off the camera, voice fx and music. Leave it to Nintendo. It's not like they'll be memory hogs since the main program is there already. They'll probably put more up for DSiWare but you'll pay for it.
I found the cameras to be surprisingly decent (old cellphone quality). I'm sure Nintendo did this low res to prevent upskirts in the subways although even with that, the camera sound is still there to minimize that from happening
I found the screens to be wanting however. There's a slight yellow tint to the whites which weren't there with both my DS Phat and DS Lite.

i can't say i'm disappointed with my new DSi :cheesygri i haven't been using much of the camera features though, just sort of skimmed through some of them. the sound button is sort of a piss off though.. since i'm used to sliding the volume button on the lite.

What kind of people are diehard DS/DSi users?

From a gaming point of view...if the graphics and overall experience is that much more superior (as I'm reading) with the PSP...why is this still selling??

It almost seems like the graphics and gaming experience of the DS is at a 5.5/10 and the PSP is 9/10 or better?

Would appreciate opinions from people who've used both preferably.

Thank you,

Where did you get those gaming experience ratings?
The PSP got almost zero good games the past year and a half while the DS gets them just about near-monthly. I'd say you've got it backwards. Graphically it's N64 vs PS2 graphically but graphics only gets you so far. Ghosting has been an issue with the PSP lcd screens from day one (and only rectified with the latest PSP model) and it's one of the main reasons why I barely turn mine on (I have 2 PSPs). The lousy analog nub is another factor in addition to lack of content. The touch screen, many pick up and play games which are perfect for a portable, almost zero load times are another reason to choose the DS over the PSP.
Sony seems to have (finally) put some much needed resources onto the PSP so I'm looking forward to finally playing some good games on there as well "soon" (which seems to be a common Sony refrain the past couple of years).

fun = overall factor

psp fun = about 6-7

DS = 8-9

DS game mechanics are easy, generally fast to pick up, doesn't take a lot to master, and is in short bursts.

PSP has a more complicated control interface with more buttons to learn, games a generally require more thought and dedication than those of DS, and has higher learning curve.

If you were on the subway with 20-30 mintues to spare, do you really wanna play final fantasy crisis core or super mario?

I'm just about finished applying a full body shield from PYD to both my DSi's...all that's left is the screens. I can't tell if there's any screen shield from the manufacturer installed?

It LOOKS like there isn't...I also notice that both screens on both units have some smudge on the edges indicative of poor wipe skillz by the assembler. Really lol'd at this one. I figured there'd be ascreen protector FASHO...

Anybody?

i think the 20-30 minutes would be spent talking to a couple of people.. no action at all :cheesygri

i think one of the most appealing factors for the psp (at least for me) was the better graphics.. but since i own a ps3, the psp graphics obviously don't look as good (and i know i obviously can't compare console to handheld but i'm just saying). in terms of the games, the only games that made the psp more appealing than the ds were the sports games.. and to be honest, once you play a sports game on the ps3 and then you try it on the psp.. it's complete crap LOL. again i know i can't compare, but that's just for me personally.

I believe the Nintendo points are always there if you buy a brand new DSi since release day. On the box there's a red sticker telling you to register on Nintendo to participate and get free points to purchase games.

At that time I think they're trying to promote the Wario Ware with DSi's camera. I believe that game worths 400points or 800points... don't remember.
