I am looking to buy a 09 Mitsubishi Eclipse (manual), 36 months 0% finance. Total comes to ~$37800 otr. How much should I negoitate down to for this to be considered a good deal? What is this tire safety and security programs they are selling? They are $300 and $500 for 36 months and included into the otr price, but they sound pretty useless to me. Do Mitsubishi make good cars in general?

Thanks.

Because it fits within my budget and has almost everything that I want without killing in insurance. My other choices are the SI and the RX-8. SI's horse power is too low and the insurance is much higher than the Eclipse. RX-8 is a mazda and it's more expensive...so no thanks.

Had two mitsubishi's. Both ran over 270,000 MILES and would have kept going if not the need for an updated vehicle. Cheap to maintain and doesn't break down often.

$3000 to $4000 nego- is easy~~
If they have stock, they would sell it with even less price, 'cause it is not hot selling car at all and Mitsu is not actively selling their cars right now.... more than -55% sale(http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSN0150279320090401).

I would buy Genesis coupe 3.8 with that price.
Eclipse's 3.8 liter engine is much like gas guzzling, unlikely Genesis coupe's.....
Genesis coupe's 3.8 is more efficient with great fun factor, 'rear-wheel drive'.
Also, Eclipse's resale value is somewhat low....
Why don't you try to test drive Genesis coupe?

The only downside with the Genesis coupe is winter driving. I've been reading about it on various genesis coupe forums the car is pretty bad in the snow (mainly cos of its huge curb weight). Also, with front wheel drive, you can get away with running all seasons. RWD you'll have to get winters which is another added expense.

How about the Lancer Ralliart? Only downside is that it only comes in an automatic transmission although some argue it's auto-manual.

As for reliability, I had an Eagle Talon that went 300,000 kms before it died. That's the closest car I've ever had to a Mitsubishi.

I've driven an Eclipse (not an 09) and a Genesis Coupe. I love the styling and the performance (fun factor) on the Genesis. I found the Eclipse to be too cramped and had more difficulty with sightlines when looking over shoulder.

Anecdotal evidence would suggest that the Genesis will be, in the long term, a more reliable vehicle than the Eclipse. It doesn't matter if the warranty on the Eclipse is 2x the length of the Hyundai if either you don't enjoy the vehicle or can't enjoy it because it is fraught with problems.

Frankly, the first car I've ever owned was a front wheel drive. Driving in the snow was much easier than the 2nd car I owned - a RWD car. But, having that RWD is so much more enjoyable to drive. 95% of the time having a rear wheel drive was fine where I lived (in the GTA) and if you drive smart and have snow tires (which may become law here in the next few years) you can get around nicely the other 5% of the time.

The V6 Eclipse will also feel much quicker in general real world driving than both of those cars. The Civic Si not only has power which is "too low" it also has like none of even that power available until you're above like 6,000rpm. The RX-8 being a rotary engine is similar but then at least it has an "excuse" and "revving it up" is what it's all about with Wankels :) The RX-8 will also drink the gas, so you wouldn't be too happy about that either.

The Eclipse sounds like a good bet for you out of these choices, especially given it seems like you've checked them out enough already. The one thing I personally hate about the Eclipse is the outwards visibility is so bad I almost feel unsafe driving one. Absolutely horrid visibility.

The interior is nothing to write home about either (unless that was revised since 07?).

Meh, don't bother feeding the trolls

 No, no one would "argue" it's an "auto-manual". The transmission is a double-clutch gearbox. It is a manual transmission, only it has two clutches which are automated in operation.

That said, I'd rather have a Lancer Ralliart too, but OP seems set on the Eclipse already.

I have to agree. Looking at the blind spots is ALMOST impossible during the test drive. The interior display is lousy imo (directions, time, radio channels all squished together, should have made a nice mini-screen) and that cloth/leather thing on the manual shift is even worst (althou it can be changed thank god). But it does have other good pts, the accel is much much better than the SI/RX-8 during my test drives. Blasting 100+ on the 407 :D The white/yellow looks really nice.

I am looking for a coupe primarily. It's my first choice so far, but nothing is set in stone.
