You have been scammed. Now you'll be signed up for all sorts of mail order catalogues and spam and your personal info will be sold off to the highest bidder in the black market.

Police doing a neighbourhood canvas as part of an investigation? You should be worried, they're doing their job.
He was just checking to see if you belonged in the neighbourhood, I bet you never hear from him again.

+1
I was once stopped, questioned and they took my info because I fit their description of car thieves in the area. Never heard from them after that.

Tough situation. Do you ask for ID and sound like a smarty pants or do you comply with their request?

I think the op may be referring to this incident:
Young students report spotting two men with guns running away from school
The Brampton Guardian
Tuesday April 7 2009
BRAMPTON - For the second time in as many days, Treeline Public School was put into lockdown.
Two students, aged 9 and 11, told police they thought they saw two men with guns jumping a fence and running away from the elementary school located in northeast Brampton. They reported the sighting at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Treeline and nearby Holy Spirit school on Bloomsbury Avenue, were put into lockdown as Peel police searched the area. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 3:30 p.m. No suspects were found.
The schools are located south of Countryside Drive and east of Airport Road.
Just after 4 p.m. Monday, Treeline was put into lockdown as a precaution after a failed home invasion attempt in a subdivision north of the area.
Three men with a handgun tried to force their way into a house north of Countryside Drive. The 19-year-old occupant held them at bay, and they drove away. Police sealed the area and searched, but found no suspects.

I thinks that the cops just want to make their presence known in the area and hopefully someone will give them a tip.
