hey everyone,
looking for some feedback about a car i am thinking about buying. it's from a gta-area mazda dealership...a mazda 3 gt hatchback. it has the 17" alloys, sport cloth interior, sunroof, and a few other goodies (but nothing out of the ordinary) it's an off lease vehicle, looks brandnew inside and it's a 2006 with 41000k.
Dealer is asking 16,995 and we offered 17 cash. they didn't go for it at first and tried to tell me they were losing money because of the extras they did after it came back to them. (detailing and new tires)
we seem to have agreed on our offer but i am wondering if it's too much to spend on a 3 year old car. i like the vehicle and was pleasently surprised with the look and feel of the hatch.
so what do you think?i know they have had it on the lot since the last week of february. any insight would be appreciated.

Yep any good dealership (official dealership or general used car lot) will go to the trouble of reconditioning vehicles before they sell them. Whether they aqcuire the cars from off-lease, trade-ins, or auctions, this is a pretty standard procedure.

If you have offered and they have agreed then it sounds like a done deal to me (well done as it's now a contract). However, did they agree at some point after disagreeing? Because that's technically a counter-offer at that point, which means you'd have to agree again.

Car being on the lot for a month is not that long so I doubt they would be really that pressed to move it at this point, unless they have a ton of other cars there and just don't have the space or something.

$17k before taxes/fees seems a little pricey but from what a friend of mine was telling me of selling prices of used Mazda3s, that seems fairly par-for-the-course particularly at a Mazda dealer.

Is there any Mazda warranty on this vehicle? Not just the remaining original factory (if any), but like a CPO warranty as well? If so that might not be a bad deal at $17k cash, taxes in. It is fairly low kms for a 3yr old vehicle too, so that's not bad.

Auto? Manual?

Assuming auto, VMR has it at 14150(wholesale) - 16325(retail), so $17k all in seems decent after tax. Though, as you mentioned, its 17k for a 3 year old car.

If you think its worth 17k, be firm on it. Tell them you know its been opn the lot since February, $17k is on the table, take it or leave it, that you'll go elsewhere.

edit: As for the warranty(assuming its basic), the bumper to bumper is 3 years IIRC, so that should be done, if not in its last few months. The powertrain is 5 years, so you got plenty left.

This deal seems a little suspicious, a 3 year old car driven an annual average 13,000k. If the car turns out to be on the up & up, they are still asking too much $$ for it. The warranty will be coming to an end soon as well. Do you really want to pay 17 g's for a car that's under warranty for only 2 years while a brand new 2009 GX starts at $16,995 sticker!

I would go new because of the finance rates. You'll end up paying much more for a slightly better looking car and without the piece of mind of a much longer warranty.

Just my opinion.

My sister just purchased a 2007 Mazda 3 with 44,000 KM at a dealership for $13,929. Personally I think $17,000 for a 06 is a bit much.

can you tell which dealership? i have had a hell of a time finding something decent!

thanks for the input everyone. i should have mentioned our offer which they have agreed to (we sign the papers tonight) is with taxes in.
it does have a few more months of the BTB warranty with the additional warranty to 5 years. this is for automatic transmission.
as for a new vehicle, i have a problem with paying frieght and all those extra costs so used for me is fine. i saw the gx but wasn't impressed. power windows was an extra!!

LOL do you really want to compare what is nearly a loaded Mazda 3 Sport to base model GX? Is that GX you're talking about even a Sport [hatchback]? (Sports at least used to be 2.3L engine only, the sedan can come with a lesser engine.)

Not to mention the fees and crap the OP mentioned above, that are common with a new car.

Also off-lease cars that are 3 years old do not usually have any lies about the odometer. I have a friend who happens to have pretty low kms on his Mazda3 lease as well. After four years he'll have less than 50k kms on it, and I'm quite sure there are lots of other people that can drive as little as 13k kms/year, if not less. It's certainly not out of the ordinary.

OP is paying cash, I'm sure they are not worried about financing.

You'll end up ... without the piece of mind of a much longer warranty.
And without the shame of having a base model  Some people (like me) despise base models... I'd definitely rather have a 3 year old car with low kms that was more or less loaded than a new car that is bone base. The only way I'd take the new base model over the used loaded model would be if the new base model had all the features and/or more than the older car, which I don't think is the case here with crap like crank windows (as the OP also mentioned).
