LF home theatre system

I am looking at spending ~$2000 on a new home theatre system for my dad as a present.

I found the Bose Lifestyle V10 at Costco for $1799 but I read reviews which weren't great on amazon.com

I was wondering what the best stuff in that price range + or - is. A couple hundred bucks more isn't a problem as long as it's quality.

Onkyo and Yamaha will give you great performance at very reasonable prices. Denon or Harmon Kardon are also good choices but pricier ones.

Bose may have some nice sounding equipment but you will pay through the nose for it, especially when compared to what the same amount will get you elsewhere.

If you are audiophile, then you might want to stay away from HTIBs. If not, then I guess an HTIB will do. Maybe you can get an Energy Take Classic 5.1 set and a low/mid-level Yamaha, Onkyo, or Denon Amplifier.

You might want to ask this question at the AVS Forums since they are more know more about audio/speakers than me.

You can easily get a good receiver, set of speakers and dvd player for well under $2,000.
I have an Onkyo 605, KEF 2005.2 5.1 speakers and an Oppo DVD player.

I agree with above. Stay away from Bose. While their stuff is good, its NOT worth the ridiculous price tag. You can get stuff just as good (or better) for a fraction of the cost.

Now, it all depends on what you want. Is 5.1 good enough? Or do you want 7.1? HDMI or not?

Assuming you want 7.1 and HDMI ... Im a Harmon Kardon *****. Marantz is also a favorite of mine (although even more costly than the HK).

Using future shop (I know, I know) as a reference:

Harmon Kardon AVR254 - 7.1, HDMI ready, 50W/channel (however HK is known to be under rated - probably looking at about 70W/channel). $799 (shop around - might be able to find it cheaper). By the by, if you read reviews, only pay attention to the more recent ones. The HK units DID have big problems when they first came out - HDMI issues. Most have been resolved in firmware updates.

So having spent $925 (including taxes) or so on your receiver, you now have a grand to spend on speakers.

For $899 at Future Shop, you got a really good option in the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speaker system. Energy makes some really good products and these sound really crisp.

If you want to go a bit less expensive (but still decent quality) the Polk Audio RM6750 is a good set of speakers. If I would get that set, I would try and swap out the sub for something a bit more powerful, but thats just me.

With $2K +/-, you have a lot of options.

You don't mention what you need for inputs from a receiver (what equipment will you be connecting). At the price you have mentioned you want to spend, put as much as you can into speakers. For example, Axiom (Canadian made speakers, very well regarded) has a 5.1 setup for $1500 (Midi 125 is what it is I believe). This leaves you $500, which will get you a decent entry level receiver.
