hi everyone,
looking to purchase a used Mazda 3, and came accross what seems to be an OK deal. I would think that the kms are a bit high for the $$$ (or vice versa), but that model is pretty much what the wife and I are looking for.
2005 Mazda3 GT
Year: 2005 Exterior: White
Make: Mazda Interior: Black
Model: Mazda3 GT SubModel: GT

Any advice on how to go about haggling a deal would be greatly appreciated!
(Oh, and I did check out the MoT website, there are no vehicles currently in their inventory that would meet our budget)

I'd avoid any mazda3 made prior to 2006. If you look at the prices, there's a huge gap between 2005 and 2006. The 2005 and older have a bad paint reputation. See used car reviews on canadiandriver.com
btw, mileage on it means it's just about hitting the 100k warranty expiry.
If you can get this for 1-2k lower, it'll be a good deal. $16k is a so-so deal, and I'd rather go with the 2010 GT sport, it's a brand new, you get to enjoy the car, you take the new car depr lumps (not to much more) (8.5k est/5yrs is less than $2k depr per yr) and at 0% fin for 4 yrs, I think it's the best buy out of all the compact cars with similar features. gt comes with bi-xenon, LED tail lights, improved tranny. I'm looking to make the jump myself. Thinking about test driving one next week.

very good points, I was not aware of the paint issues on the 05s. My first choice would have been to go with an new 2009 GT, but from what I gather on the Mazda thread, these are mostly long gone / difficult to find.
Sort of off topic, but how do the 09 Saturn Astra XR or Hyundai Elantra GL compare to the Mazda 3 in terms of reliabilty and value?
The Saturn can be had for 17K pre-haggling - even with all the doom and gloom GM news going around, the value seems pretty good.

My friend brought the 05 Mazda 3 GT for $24k all in brand new back then (paid cash), he has leather and stuff. Hence, kind of weird to see $15k for 93k clicks on it

How is it a "so-so deal" when I look at trader.ca 2005 Mazdas that are close to 100,000 km are going for $8K-10K? Is there something special about this GT model that makes it almost $5000 more expensive? I also couldn't notice a huge gap between 2005 and 2006 prices.
BTW, here's a 2005 Mazda 3 GT with 113000km, listed for $8,490

Found this one, it's a demo (no problem with that), but asking price is a tad high.
Year 2009
Make MAZDA
Model Detail GT WITH LUXURY PKG.
Transmission Manual
Price $19,888.00
Mileage 2,389 km
Would you consider a 18K offer OTR a fair deal for something like this?

04' - 06' models also had rust issues, though all the models do have some, it more serious in the older models.
GT = 2.3 L engine + extra goodies(factory body kit, fog lights, sunroof, leather, etc.)
GX/GS = 2.0L engine

They preferably won't take it, a demo GS is already $19k OTR(I would know, my aunt bought a demo auto GX /w Comfort + AC for $20k OTR with rust proof package, it has 12km on it). Considering a new GT w/o lux is $25k OTR after discounts and rebates, I'd say $5k off would be fair, and thats still for the GT w/o luxury package.
But it won't hurt to try.

I wrote this somwhere else recently on another thread, but my sister just purchased a 2007 Mazda GT with about 44,000KM and she paid about $13,959. What your thinking of getting has alot of KM for a car that is $16,000, personally I think you can get a better deal.

Just so you have an idea...
I have a '05 3 Sport GT w/ 90km but without the auto tranny, leather or sunroof. The value at end of lease, which is coming up soon, is under 13k. The MSRP for later models decreased though, and I am planning on returning the lease since I don't believe it's worth the buyout. With lux pkg, sunroof and auto maybe 14-15 would be the right neighbourhood.
Food for thought.

That price seems high to me. I'm currently selling my Mazda3 Sport GT (2005, 82,000 Kms) for 12,350 (or best offer).

Looking around, that seems like about the going rate. I don't have any rust, one owner, full dealer service history, etc.
Personally, I think the 3 is a fantastic car and if it wasn't for the fact that I have the "itch" for a mini cooper S, I'd be keeping it. I've used it as my commuter every day for the past 3.5 years and it's reliable, comfortable and overall a quality built car.
Regarding the rust and paint problems, I've read all about them but IMHO it's luck of the draw. I had someone around to look at the car and they said every Mazda3 had rust problems...I seem to have escaped. Perhaps it's because I regularly had it waxed..who knows.
if you're interested in mine, PM me or drop me an email (details in the ad).
Cheers

Crap...I had no idea. Maybe I should trade mine in for a Honda or even a 2010 Mazda if there's 0% financing.

The price on the first one is waayyyy too high for a 5 year old car with 93,000 kms on it. It's coming up on the 96,000km major service as well, which is pretty costly. The second one you posted doesn't seem so bad, but you can probably knock it down a bit further if you negotiate.

Heck, off lease 05's are going for way below this price. I've personally seen them for around 8500. I wouldn't pay anything more for this. For 16K, you have better options out there in the used market - specially in this economic environment.

I don't know about the hyundai, but I think Astra XR with it's standard equipment is a pretty good deal. It's a reliable car, it's been around for 4 years in europe and scored good ranks in terms of reliability. If you are not scared about the resale value you should take this car in consideration.

$16,000 for a 4 year old economy-class car with 93,000 kms? How could anyone think that's a good deal?
