View Full Version : McDonald's Accepting Coupons

Apr 29th, 2009, 07:36 AM
That's right folks. McDonald's is now accepting all coupons from most fast food restaurants. Bring in your KFC, Burger King, A&W coupons into McDonald's and a equivalent sandwich will be issued accordingly.
For example, if Burger King is offering a buy one, get one free for their Whoopers, then bring your BK coupon in and McDonald's will give you 2 Big Macs for the price of one.

I think the refill policy is a good analogy because I have been to McDonald's locations where I wasn't allowed a refill. I'm sure the coupon thing works like that, some stores yes, some stores no. I have, for a fact, seen it in the GTA.
There are lots of tips and tricks with McD's.
#137 = Ask for fries with no salt to get fresh fries (and then add salt yourself with a little package).

I was in the Rideau Mcdonald's the other and went to redeem an actual McDonalds coupon that was distributed in our area. They would not accept it, on the grounds that they are a franchise location and have the option. The cashier mentioned this applied to the Elgin and Bank Street (downtown) locations as well. She did concede that they USED to accept them..just not anymore. Anyone else have experience with this?

McD's are all over the frikkin' place in the city. On the average person's commute in this city, there are probably three locations that are less than a five minute detour from their route. They are open late, many are even 24 hours.
It's NOT like you have to go to the other end of town during rush hour because they're only open for three ours at a time (damn you, Philips warehouse!). It's NOT like it's more than a 10 minute investment of your time. It's NOT like you couldn't use the pre-burn-off of the crap calories you're going to eat (not a condemnation, I love the stuff myself: Double mac meal super size with angus on side).
Grab whatever coupon, walk in, and go at it! If you haven't gotten the idea that its YMMV, leaning towards YES, you shouldn't even bother trying to learn anything by means of reading and understanding words strung together into sentences that make statements (sorry, that sounds meaner than I intended, but I think it's funny, so it stays). !

no need to call head office. i can confirm this deal its legit. its not advertised anywhere but its there laid down by the McDonald's corporation. if they do not honour the deal. ask them for their store number and the name of the consultant, they will usually scared shitless and give you the deal. otherwise, report them and then they will get in **** for it.

Guys, this is nation wide. If clerk refuses ask for manager, and they will accept. they have always accepted competition coupons. Most clerks are not aware of this.
Also, you may have to mention that you used coupon in other Mcd's and they have always accepted competition coupons. If McD managers, call Head Office, they will get same message where they must accept the coupons.
Great deal, it is low key and not advertised by Mcd's.

The double cheeseburger dressed like a big mac is also my favorite. It is fresh (custom cooking), and less bread.
In the old days, to get a fresh big mac with no pickles. When I saw the manager in charge of bin, and pull a big mac out of warming bin, and open box, and stick his fingers inside looking for pickles to pull out, pissed me off.
I had a plan, I too 2 bites, starting to cough, choke and breath heavy, asked for manager, and explained to him that I'm allergic to pickles, and let him know that the big mac I ate had some pickle juice......
I then put him in the corner, and told him to never f&ckin do that ever again, since McD's policy is to serve the client and cook all custom orders. Let me tell you , this guy learn't his lesson big time....

I've also used expired coupons at both BK and McD's never questioned expry, except for one time at BK when i told them i would go across the street to use at competitor then they said, "just this one time" yeah right. Long story short these places make most of thier money on fries and drinks, everything else is bonus, so just be firm and they give in most of the time.

Do you mind if i ask, how much does a McD manager make? I know they have stock options, free meals and big bonuses. Is it true?
When I worked there a few years back I was making around $10 bucks an hour. I was only 16 though and was the lowest level of managers (swing manager) who get paid by the hour.
My thoughts too. Sounds like more trouble than it's worth, and expect to piss off people behind you if there's a lineup.
All McDonald's workers were trained to talk to their manager if someone comes in with a competitor's coupons. All managers were trained to accept any competitors' coupons with some judgement (coupon wasn't photocopied, "competitor" isn't fake, not a US coupon, etc).

When I worked there a few years back I was making around $10 bucks an hour. I was only 16 though and was the lowest level of managers (swing manager) who get paid by the hour.
All McDonald's workers were trained to talk to their manager if someone comes in with a competitor's coupons. All managers were trained to accept any competitors' coupons with some judgement (coupon wasn't photocopied, "competitor" isn't fake, not a US coupon, etc).
In most cases a legit coupon from another restaurant would be accepted without any hassles.
asked two managers at two different restaurants. they both rejected me. a third place said they would only accept from certain fast food places. I now feel too embarrassed to try again.

1) Can confirm this in Winnipeg. Have been doing it for over 8 years now...
2)They always take expired coupons.
3) The burger doesnt need to be an equivalent...half of the time I tell them I have a buy one get one (even if it isnt) and then I choose whatever burger I want at the Intercom. I have never had a problem, and I always get 2 burgers for the price of 1 this way. when I get to the window, they rarely even ask for a coupon.

Call up their headquarters. Given the trouble they will probably give you a free combo or sandwich coupon. I know, it sounds silly, but I know someone who isn't embarrassed about legitimately complaining and it works for them.
I don't have the guts to do it myself though. lol :cheesygri

Anyone heard of the ghetto Big Mac
You order kiddie fries and double cheese burger.
You take the fries and stick it in the middle. Now you have a Big Mac without the extra cost.
wtf? That doesnt even make any sense.
A ghetto big mac would be a double cheese burger you ask them to replace the bun with a sesame bun, then you ask them to hold the mustard and add mac sauce + lettuce.

This seems too good to be true.
I have enough trouble sometimes getting restaurants to accept their OWN coupons.
I got a free Uncle Burger coupon from A&W and had to go to 2 different places and speak to the manager before I could get anything.
Maybe I'll try this at McDo when the lines aren't long...

Nope, double cheese burger is less than 2$ if i remember correctly, and a big mac is around 4$, I used to get 2 double cheese burgers dressed like a mac and it would not even approach the price of a mac, but was more filling. Just ask for a double cheese burger dressed like a Mac.

One of my friends who use to work at McD told me it is at the discretion of the store management (most HO store yes, but franchisee less likely). I would understand if McDonalds accept coupon that are “similar” regarding menu items (i.e. KFC: Classic Chicken vs. McChicken, BK Fish to Filet-O-Fish, and in the past BK Whopper vs. the discontinued BigXtra or the KFC Chicken Strips vs. “discontinued” Select Strip), but for people who are pushing it they are ***** ! (pieces of chicken vs. sandwiches, even X pieces chicken meals to X nuggets meals isn’t really comparable, What is at McD that is comparable to a 3-piece KFC meal coupon price? 4pack Kids Meal? (price is still probably lower than KFC coupon price + toy lol), 6pack?.
Also, whenever they have mailer-coupons it states on the back “available at participating restaurants”, just to save their butts from problems like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eiG5FCYJ8k&feature=related, hahahah…

I find this surprising. I went to a McD's a couple months back and had a McD's coupon. I didn't realize the coupon expired the previous day...the clerk pointed out that the coupon was expired and would not take it. Surprising they will take a competitors coupon, but not their own coupon 1 day after expiry.

I was a "swing manager" and that is a part-time manager.
In my days (mid 80's), managers were making about 50k per year, and got a free car if they had 10 years of service. Not sure what salary would be today. They offerred me full-time status and a store to run, and I decided to stick to my career in IT.

Do you mind if i ask, how much does a McD manager make? I know they have stock options, free meals and big bonuses. Is it true?

Accepting competitors' coupons used to be standard practice across the board but seems to have gone out of fashion for the last 5-10 years.
Glad to hear reports of it coming back here and there. Hopefully the trend catches on again. Especially now that most fast food joints are so ridiculously expensive without a coupon these days! It's like Sears' pricing -- it's all designed to be sold at 40% off from the git-go.

Swing managers now make around $30-35k a year. The ones on salary (Store and assistant store managers) make about $40-50k a year and up.

Let me tell you a little story about their ice cream products DO NOT READ IF YOU EVER WANT TO EAT SOME AGAIN. Like most kids I worked at MC-D's to earn some $$. I flipped burgers, cleaned the store and refilled the shake/ice cream machines. Here's where the problem is: One minute I was putting fresh meat on the grill , the next minute a manager is screaming the shake machine is empty. As much as you're "supposed" to wash your hands every time before you touch it, at 6pm when there's a tour bus in the parking lot and 200 customers in the store you do it right away or the stuff hits the fan. Those milk bags are huge and floppy, they nearly always splash all over your hands. What was on my hands already ? Raw hamburger meat. More than once, the health inspector closed down the shake machine due to high bacteria count. Ever get the runs after McD's ? That's why.
As I said, won't touch that kind of food today :o The combination of kids that don't care and managers who want it now = not the most hygenic conditions.

McDonald's robber gets fried, not fries, with his order
A man who attempted to rob a McDonald's restaurant in Surrey, B.C., didn't get fries with his order, but he did get fried when a worker doused him with a litre of boiling cooking oil.
Police said just before midnight Wednesday, the man walked up to the drive-thru window of the restaurant at 96th Avenue and 160th Street.
With his face partially covered by his shirt, the man pulled a knife and ordered the cashier to hand over some money. He then reached in through the window with his arms and head to grab money from the cash register.
When the cashier started yelling, it prompted a fellow worker to act, said Sgt. Roger Morrow of the Surrey RCMP.
"One of the other staffers ... in the restaurant grabbed some kind of a container ... I don't have the specifics to what type, and ends up throwing what we estimate to be about a litre of boiling oil onto the robber's face, his head and neck," said Morrow.
The man then fled, leaving most, but not all of the cash behind. It's thought he may have suffered second-degree burns. Police are now looking for a South Asian male, about six feet tall, 20 to 25 years old, with burns on his hands, neck and face.

According to my friend who works in Mcdonalds HR, corporate locations have to accept competitor's coupons. The cashier may not accept it at first but if you ask to speak to a manager they will accept it because they could lose out on bonuses if you complain about that location. Franchises... YMMV.

I'm gonna try it out with some BK coupons... but for now i got some mcdees coupons in the mail, 2 buy 1 get 1 free coupons and 2 2can dine for 7.98.
Anyways my ultimate rfd combo. 2 double cheeseburgers dressed like big macs, small fries and a large cup of water for 4.98! lol
Anyone else customize burgers? lol
Yes. I like to get 2 cheeseburger meal with tomato, lettuce and mayo on them. 10 years ago, these extra toppings were FREE but about 9 years ago it changed to 25 or 50 cents for each additional topping. I just really like the taste.
As far as how much managers maker, it depends on location. Northern Alberta is going to pay considerably more (or was) than central Ontario. For example, they had signs up that starting wage was $16/hr for fulltime staff, $14/hr for part-time.

Pretty much anything processed isn't healthy compared to what you could probably whip up yourself
Muffin (high carbs 65g+, high sugar 33g+)
Breakfast Burrito (16g fat - 0.3g Trans, 800 mg Sodium - 33% daily value, 440 calories - 22% DV)
Ice cream Cone (28g sugar ~ 2 TBSP Sugar) but still a better alternative to the McFlurry and other cold desserts sold from places like DQ
Salad is likely fine, without croutons and your choose a vinegrette dressing.
I'd only consider the Salad and Grilled Chicken selections as the healthy alternatives on the menu. Although I read the Egg McMuffin is one of the "heathier" fast food breakfast options out there.

This isn't actually anything new. Many of the locations have been accepting any competitors' coupons for years now. It just wasn't usually advertised and it's up to the manager's descretion on what products/offers would be considered equivalent.

I was a manager at one point and those 3 locations are all owned by the same franchise. When I was there, it was always store policy to accept coupons from other restaurants. This might have changed since then but I think you're biggest challenge would be to find a manager on duty who knows this internal company policy.

The double cheeseburger dressed like a big mac is also my favorite. It is fresh (custom cooking), and less bread.
I then put him in the corner, and told him to never f&ckin do that ever again, since McD's policy is to serve the client and cook all custom orders. Let me tell you , this guy learn't his lesson big time....
Ex-manager of McD's
Sergio
It's not just McDonald's policy to prepare custom orders freshly; it's McDonald's policy to prepare ALL orders freshly.
Asking for a double cheeseburger dressed like a Big Mac will no longer get a fresher product as McDonald's no longer (at least they are not supposed to) practice batch cooking. They swtiched to Made For You many years ago in all locations across Canada.
To any customers here, any McDonalds that is using a buffer in the bin is breaking corporate policy. The only time there should be an extra sandwich prepared would be in the case of an accident and even then, it would be only good for 5 minutes.
Even as recently as a few years ago, I saw certain Toronto McDonalds locations breaking this rule and had bins full of food when there were no customers in the restaurant. Suffice to say, I've been there since and they have discontinued this company no-no.

Tell them to call head office!!!!!!!
Number 1 rule at McDonald, client is always right.
I'm surprised they refused.
Last week when I used the Harveys promotion print out, the girl freaked out, when Manager came, he gave me complete order for free :)
I simply asked him to call head office and according to my research, McDonalds will accept any competitors coupons...
