Hello,
I'm looking at getting 3-4 water bottles to reduce my usage of packaged bottled water.
Any suggestions? From what I've read, I should look for BPA free bottles, as well stainless steel is the best option.
http://www.leas.ca/On-the-Trail-of-Water-Bottle-Toxins.htm
Any stores to recommend where I can get bottles at a reasonable price?
Thanks

I have a Sigg bottle. Very very light, but it's pricey and can dent.
Anyone know where I can get a Kleen Kanteen bottle for a decent price?

I've got a kleen kanteen that works great. I haven't seen much variability in pricing though, generally around $20(depending on the size). You can buy them at Chapters, as well as a number of other stores

I use a Klean Kanteen. I spend months in debating whether to get them or SIGG and I chose them because I like the wider mouth where I could put ice in it too.

I think Sporting Life got the best price. But they can dent too. If you were to get them, avoid the coloured ones. The colour chip when dent.

This is a really good bottle at a great price... bought one myself. Best of all, it's vaccuum insulated which keeps your drink cold (or hot) for hours.

Kanteen are dishwasher safe
http://www.kleankanteen.com/faqs/faqs.html
Klean Kanteens are dishwasher safe and are also easy to clean with a bottle brush and mild soap. We also recommend an old fashioned cleaner: white vinegar and baking soda.
Caps should not be washed in the dishwasher because water can squeeze into the cap.

I have both Sigg and Kleen Kanteen.
Sigg Advantage: The Sigg is much better for the gym. Stylish appearance, and still easy to grip when your hand is sweaty. Only need one hand to drink from it because you don't have to twist the lid off, and it won't spill even when moving due to the lid design. Also, it's very light and easy to carry around. Got the Sigg at Coast Mountain Sports.
Disadvantage: Easy to dent, expensive. The finish scrapes off easily. Hard to find in stores sometimes.
Kleen Kanteen Advantage:The Kleen Kanteen is what I put on the night stand in case I need a drink in the middle of the night. It won't get hurt if I accidentally knock it over when grasping for it in the dark. It won't spill anything because you can close it tightly. There's no temptation to try to swig from it when lying on my back because if you do that with the Sigg, the water will spill all over your face. The Klean Kanteen was a gift. Lower Price.
Disadvantage: Not sexy / stylish, not usable with one hand. Not lightweight.

I have both a Sigg and Kleen Kanteen bottle and I personally prefer the Kleen Kanteen. It's more durable, and easier to clean with the wider opening I'm getting thirsty just thinking about it!

+ 1. Also Kleen Kanteen has wide steel cap for their bottles, so we don't need to worry about the plastic caps health issue or the water taste wierd problem. I never understand why Sigg won't think about the metal cap idea.

Get a stainless steel bottle.

They have some pretty good stainless steel ones. Lots of Kleen Kanteen clones for a fraction of the price, and I saw some selling for 4 dollars.

Also, I have one of these Thermos Backpack bottles for hot drinks.
http://www.thermos.com/Product_detail.aspx?CatCode=BEVG&SubcategoryID=8&ViewAll=true&ProductID=494
It's a bit pricey at $33, but it keeps coffee hot for 8 hours, and it doesn't leak, nor does the lid pop open accidentally.
The only place I've found this bottle is at Bass Pro (which they never seem to have in stock) or Binz (which is in the Beaches on Queen East).

I have a kleen kanteen and a sigg bottle.
I'm surprised everyone seems so pleased with the kleen kanteen. I bought this bottle first then switched to sigg because of the horrid metallic taste that I was experiencing. I cleaned it out numerous times and I even called Kleen Kanteen for tips. They told me I wasn't used to the taste of water since I was used to plastic bottles.
I only use my kleen kanteen for smoothies since I don't taste the metallic taste and it's easier to clean, but i use my sigg bottle strictly for water.
I gave a kleen kanteen to a friend for her birthday, since I bought hers the same time I bought mine and she told me it carried the most disgusting taste. I always ask people what they think of the bottle when I see someone with it. I've always gotten the "well, you just get used to it."

I picked up a Sigg 0.6L for $5 through some corporate sales program. None of the less, I cannot seem to get the taste of dishsoap out of it. I cleaned it once with hot water and soap, and then rinsed it out several times. Every time I refill it and let the water sit for a few hours, it starts to smell and taste like soap. Is there anything I can do to clean it?

I hear you can soak either diluted apple juice or diluted vinegar to get the soap taste out.

I only came across this thread after my own got moved into this forum :o
I too am looking for a new bottle. But I'd like one with a cap that makes drinking easy! I find that the wide mouth bottles are good bc they fit ice in, but you a) can't fit them in a cup holder and b) risk washing your face with your drink if you take a quick swig or drink while driving/working out.
I have a medium sized wide opening and it does still fit ice cubes, but I still find that I get spillage now and then if I tip it back too fast.
I've seen the SIGG bottles and also the Camelbak bottles with lids that you a) don't have to twist off to drink from and b) have a narrow spout to drink from. With the Camelbak one, though, I noticed on the webiste pics that the spout/nozzle is attached to a straw that goes down into the bottle. I find this disadvantageous because its an extra part to worry about.
ALSO, with my current cheapie stainless stell bottle from Winners, I find that it sweats a LOT. So, SIGG would be the frontrunner since it has a "sport friendly" model, except that I'd expect it to sweat a lot and also easily dent.
Camelbak would be the frontrunner if it wasn't for that straw-like piece used with their bottles.
Seems hard to find a bottle that:
-doesn't easily dent
-doesn't sweat
-work-out friendly i.e. won't spill if taking quick swigs or tiping bottle back
-doesn't have extra parts
-fit ice cubes
-can be used in the freezer
-doesn't have a funny taste
??

They have clones of Kleen Kanteen, stainless steel bottles for 1/5th the price.
I've bought several good quality, stainless steel bottles from them for a few dollars. The location in Toronto seems to have stainless steel bottles on sale all the time.
Don't touch aluminium unless you want Alzheimer's. Stay away from any plastics, they taint the water and change the taste. Not good.
Stainless steel lasts a long time, it's healthy, and is more environmentally sustainable than the other options.

You're talking about the Bilt Design bottles?
You're funny. You'll drink from uncoated, random steel made in China but won't touch coated Aluminum from a 100 yr. old Swiss company?
The MEC bottle is junk. It is NOT a KK clone; not even close. We bought a couple for a caribbean vacation, and left em with the locals when we were done.
Aside from the issue of steel of unknown quality and safety, the Bilt bottles also have seems galore, which make them hard to clean and prone to the risk of bacteria build-up.

Stainless steel doesn't need to be coated, it's not harmful.
Personally I don't like the aluminium ones because I do rock climbing and lots of adventure sports, so they get banged up a lot and that coating doesn't last.
I actually use a high quality one from MEC, not the cheapo ones. I use something with a vacuum seal. Kleen Kanteen is way overpriced, same with those Swiss bottles. Just because they say it's from Switzerland doesn't mean it's any good.

Where did you hear about Al and Alzheimers?
Soyabean
Aug 11th, 2009, 12:08 AM
I heard somewhere that when they studied the corpses of people who suffered from alzeimers, they found higher than normal amounts of Al in their body. Whether Al causes alzheimers or the build up of Al is caused by Alzheimers has yet to be proven. But there was pattern there. Either way, staying away from Al seems to be pretty good idea.

i would definitely go with a klean kanteen. they're like tanks, don't scratch or dent
Kleen Kanteens are not indestructable. I dropped a half-filled bottle on tile and the bottom ended up with a dent. Also, stainless steel will scratch if treated roughly. I use my Kleen Kanteen when I'm paddling and the Kanteen logo has nearly worn off due to the bottle rolling around in the hull.
With that said, Kanteens are definitely more robust than SIGGs. I had a SIGG for a few months too and it couldn't withstand any drops before scratching, denting, etc.

Most researchers no longer regard aluminum as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease.

As of last Friday, Sporting Life had all sizes of Klean Kanteen on sale for $19.99. I only saw the 27oz and smaller sizes in stock tho (at the Yonge st store). They had the regular and widemouth versions.
