Hello All..
I'm computer of 6 years has died and I need a computer to do some accounting work asap.
I'm looking for computer in the $300-$400.
I'm looking for a motherboard,CPU and memory, onboard graphics is ok.
I have a new PSU and I still want to use my IDE Drives because all my information is in there.
I want the componets fast, so I prefer to pick up in Toronto, ie Canada Computers, Infonec, etc.
I'm just looking for something that can surf, a bit of photoshop, and some accounting work. So basic is good enough, though an HDMI port might be nice.
Or if someone can recommend a whole system under $400, that is good too.
Thanks.

I'm not up to date with my computers anymore so I'm not sure what is good/bad...

AMD X2 7850
AMD 780G motherboard
4 gigs of generic DDR2 800
500 gig sata hard drive
.... throw your ide drive into a encloser & you'd be done

Just a reminder - new motherboards only have ONE PATA cable for two drives. Remember that when planning to reuse optical or hard drives. It might be worth buying a new SATA hard drive and DVDRW.
After 6 years, I'd definitely get a new hard drive... old drives have higher fail rates.

I guess it depends what you mean by this. If you mean... harddrive that were made 5 years ago were built poorly and dont last long then I would disagree with you.
If you mean because it already has 5 years of wear & tear on it, there is a higher chance of failure, then I agree.

$399 ... http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=ca&CS=cabsdt1&l=en&OC=DT_V220_F1_E
Put your IDE HD in an enclosure and retrieve the data.

This might actually be easier than terrybear's suggestion (terry's looks like you have to build it yourself).
Better off saving yourself the trouble + headache, and get that Dell, it already comes with Windows Vista, then go grab an external harddrive with IDE support and you're good to go!

that is true the dell is a good option but maybe the user wants to hand balm his own box for the saving & know whats gone in it as being good & not oem garbage that dell would use that is sometimes hard to repair or replace.

you can always slap an IDE controller into the desktop for like $20-$30

That's why people like you and me and a lot of the other RFD guys in this section of the forum like to build their own!
He started off "I want the componets fast, so I prefer to pick up in Toronto, ie Canada Computers, Infonec, etc."
then he said: "I'm not up to date with my computers anymore so I'm not sure what is good/bad... "
Comment 1 sounds like he knows how to build them...Comment 2 sounds like he's been a bit out of the PC component scene for a bit.
Dell's, even though it is OEM, should be good enough for what he's looking for + his budget.

Thanks for all the opinions.
I need it fast, so Dell really isn't a option for me though I have bought many Dells for friends and family. I want to build my own cause this will be my tester unit before I build a higher end HTPC unit.
Thanks once again.
