I went for my EDL appointment on the 22nd of may at the yonge and sheppard location in toronto.

I just got my EDL today via DHL courier delivery. Nothing really special except it says CAN on the top right corner and the back looks like passport bar code

The protective sleeve to hold the EDL in to protect your RFID chip is just a ordinary paper sleeve. At least that is what i think it is.

Did you get yours yet?

I have a passport, I don't really need it. Actutally, the last time I renewed my driver's license, it was about 1 month before the EDL came into effect, so I will probably be one of the last people to have it.

i think it is good just because of one thing, you do not need to worry about losing your passport. I have a passport too but I think it is so troublesome when i cross the border with it as i have to be extra careful and stuff.

With a EDL,even if i lose it, it will not be as much trouble as losing a passport

Just to be clear, one has to apply for an EDL seperately. It's a seperate process than a renewal. All the info and making the interview appt is on the ServiceOntario website. It also costs an additional $40...

Good to know, thanks. The last thing I want is another RFID to carry around.

Are the EDL's the new drivers licenses? One that look like this? (http://windsorchamber.org/newsletters/Enhanced%20Driver%27s%20Lincense%20Ontario.jpg)

Quick question

If you get an EDL now, do you have to pay again when you renew (2 months from now)?

Nope, I don't need an EDL because I always keep my passport current.

From their FAQ

http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetAttachDocs/023-05009E~1/$File/023-05009E-EnhancedDriversLicenceGuide.pdf

It says

22.
How much does the EDL cost?
The fee for the EDL is $40 in addition to the cost of renewing your drivers license ($75)

My license doesn't expire for 1.5 years, does this mean I have to pay $115 to get my EDL or $40? I'd rather pay the ministry for a renewal later.

If you apply for it now, they will charge you $40 and you will be required to pay your DL renewal at a later date.

If you are (I believe) within 6 months of your DL renewal they will want you to pay the DL renewal at the time of your EDL application.

Rather carry and keep my passport updated. $40 isn't worth convenience unless it makes the lines at the border shorter magically

This is cheaper to replace then a passport and fits in your wallet. It's also much less useful to con artists / questionable folk since it only allows ground and water crossing (no air) for US / Canada. The EDL seems much easier to replace as well assuming you live at the same address and arn't changing any info.

A passport on the other hand can serve many purposes, including air travel and travel to pretty much every country in the world.

I'm signing up. Best part is you can make an appointment without actually pre-paying, something service ontario doesn't usually do.

Applications state Canadian Citizens only.

No RFID chip for me!
ohh boo hoo, no personal info is on the chip, just a unique number that links to a database owned in Canada. If someone gets access to that database to cross fererence that number what are they going to find? My address and citizenship? I post this info in the yellowpages, and most people have more details then that posted on facebook.

Guess what, soon pretty much every credit card is going to have an RFID chip, paypass.

How do you apply for this?

Go into MTO or apply online........

No RFID chip for me!

+1

Having another sleeve to carry the EDL in is annoying.
Rather just use my passport, at least that doesn't have RFID in it yet.

Just a heads up... Hubby's license renewal is due. He takes the forms (needs to write his Z again) to the appropriate MTO office and guess what? They can't renew EDL's! They tell him he needs to book an appt with the Service Ontario office in the region that does EDL's. What a royal PITA as his license expires on Monday and no appt's till Monday. No where on his license renewal paperwork did it say it can't be done at the MTO either. He's not a happy camper at this point and wondering what they are going to charge him. He's had the EDL not yet a full year.

The only office that can do knowledge tests and EDL renewals is the office at College Park in downtown Toronto.

There won't be any extra charges because he is expired, it will still be $10 for the knowledge test, $75 for the licensing fee/DL renewal and $40 for the EDL renewal.

Just wait until after he renews his EDL at the ServiceOntario office...he won't have a valid EDL until he receives his actual EDL card in the mail.

He did his Z already when he was at the MTO office. He hasn't even had the EDL for a full year yet, there is no way he's paying another $40 for it. We know that he won't have a valid card technically, but we also know that there do let people cross with the paperwork till the card comes (from personal experience). If they try to hit him for another $40 he'll tell them to shove it and get a Nexus.

Ok, here's the scoop everyone. When your DL expires you must go to a Service Ontario office to renew it. Not every office does it (as you probably already know if you have an EDL ; ). Your actual enhanced portion expires 5 years from when you got it and it doesn't necessarily coincide with your DL. The DL renewal is similar to your original EDL interview, you are asked some of the same questions on the same paperwork. They take your pic, etc. and you pay the renewal fee for your DL. Now when your EDL comes up for renewal you'll go through the same process again at Service Ontario and pay the $40 for it.

So in hindsight and from experience, if you have an EDL, make the appt. to do your renewal as soon as you get the paperwork in the mail. If you're really on top of things you can renew your DL 6 months before it expires. This is a bit of a PITA but probably no more so than a Nexus card and having to do the appt. and interviews to renew it...
