I will be in my 4th year at the University of Toronto this coming september. I am sort of preparing myself for when I graduate. I want to work in a relevant entry level position in the financial sector. I plan to do my CFA level 1 in my 4th year, but when I look at jobs in banks etc., a lot of them require CSC. From what I heard, the CFA is much more extensive than a CSC, so when they see that I have completed my CFA level 1, would it override the the CSC requirement?

if not then perhaps I should hold off my cfa until after I graduate and do the CSC this summer. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

No, it will not.

Just do your CSC, you won't even need to study for it.. take it as a $1000 investment.

And be careful how you're listing your CFA status on your resume, as you may or may not be violating CFA program ethics textbook code. Double check with your textbook.

It depends on the position.

I've noticed that more "junior" positions list the CSC. Whereas the higher end positions would like CFA enrolment.

thanks for the reply. I guess Ill do my CSC this summer. How long will it take to prepare for CSC?

also, what ethics code violation? If I am enrolled in the CFA level 1 exam and I put it on my resume as: CFA Institute - CFA level 1 (2010-present) or something like that, will I be violating any ethics code?

You need to re-read the ethics section again.

LOL, have you read the ethics section for L1?
Heed the postor's advice or check with CFAI themselves. They're a call away.

If you read his post again, it's obvious he hasn't even signed up for L1 yet. So he would not have read the ethics section yet.

A small caveat: L1, though easy if you've taken finance and accounting courses already, is a lot of work but is pretty marginal in terms of benefit on your resume.
Conversely, you can do the CSC in two weeks given that you've taken some finance courses.

And no, a CFA does not override a CSC. A CSC, as idiotic as it is, allows you to sells mutual funds. There are no special rights granted to CFA charterholders.
